GenEd (Generation Educators)
Indonesia has one of the lowest children literacy rates in ASEAN, consecutively ranked bottom 10 of the PISA test for 20 years. Current Indonesian adult literacy rates are equivalent to secondary school students in Scandinavia. By 2030, Indonesia is predicted to incur USD 440 billion loss in economic output due to one of the widest employment skills gap.
Without critical thinking and literacy skills,
Indonesian children and adults will be unable to make accurate informed
decisions, embrace tolerance, and obtain social mobility. At this rate, Indonesia will continue to fall behind in future-ready human capital.
The root of the matter is that school leaders and teachers are often overlooked as major influencers and key stakeholders in education. With little training or limited upskilling opportunities, school leaders and teachers are greatly underserved and unsupported in the country’s mission in addressing education inequity.
The majority of schools in Indonesia do not have a comprehensive professional development learning journey for its school leaders and educators. Currently, Indonesian school leaders and teachers respectively receive on average one or two trainings annually. Alternative programs are often short-term, unstructured, passive, lack 21st century relevance, and are not contextualized to a specific school’s learning environment.
Exacerbated with the disconnect between the education sector and the business industry, Teachers and school leaders also have little insights into the challenges and skills demand of the workforce.
Without a clear learning pathway and professional development programs, School Leaders are unable to effectively adapt school-level practices (including how to best support its teachers) to foster and create genuine innovative learning environments. Similarly, teachers resort to outdated teaching methods insufficient to equip students with critical thinking & literacy skills key to thriving in the future of work.
This issue is pervasive nationwide affecting public and private schools, in rural and urban areas whereby 2.6 million teachers and 300,000 school leaders are currently raising 50 million future generation of Indonesians without sufficient support and tools. Further exacerbated by school closures and teaching disruptions during the pandemic, it becomes critical for schools to adopt the right strategy to overcome learning deficits of the past 2 years and to thrive in the post-pandemic future.
The “Reengaging Learners” Challenge aims to bridge learning gaps for the most underserved children and youth to thrive and succeed. GenEd believes that the key to ensuring learning equity across Indonesia and even South East Asia, is equitable access to high quality teachers with resilient school leaders. In order to improve learning outcomes, School Leaders and Teachers should be empowered with powerful strategies and insights relevant to the 21st century and to navigate an uncertain future.
Through our (synchronous and asynchronous) innovation programs, GenEd strives to empower the primary influencers of education i.e. School Leaders and Teachers in disadvantaged communities, ensuring even the most underprivileged children can undergo high quality learning and develop the fundamental skills to succeed.
Our solution is to bridge education and business by offering 21st century skills modules, digital resources, and cross industry networking opportunities for educators and school leaders to inspire them and improve learning environments and teaching practices.
GenEd’s curriculum is uniquely designed to integrate the OECD’s PISA framework and 21st century mindset into simple and actionable exercises in schools and classroom. The focus on critical thinking and literacy means that the learnings are adaptable across subjects and grade levels.
This allows teachers to transform into explorers, researchers, designers, entrepreneurs - and sustainably reinvent the way they teach. This way they are authentically empowered to increase classroom engagement and adapt learning focus, and equip students for the future.
We offer schools a transformative learning pathway and networking opportunities for its School Leaders and Educators throughout the year, so they can adequately adapt, reinvent, evaluate, and redirect learning activities with 21st century relevant skills, and better equip students for the future.
With our low-cost (1.5 USD/user/month) web-based access to learning modules digital library, and networking channels, GenEd will reach school leaders and teachers at scale, whom are previously out of reach.
GenEd recognizes that it is imperative in order to successfully reengage learners, and ensure equitable access to quality education: Every child should be taught by capable, inspired teachers; Every school should be led by innovative and entrepreneurial leaders.
The Indonesian education sector and business industry is completely disconnected. School Leaders and Teachers have little insights into what are the necessary skills demands of future businesses – and are unprepared to adapt lessons and integrate appropriate exercises. Without seamless integration of industry foundational skills with education, the Indonesian skills gap risks continuing to widen.
Many Indonesian school leaders are unprepared to identify underlying challenges faced and formulate success strategies for their schools, including contextualizing the right support for its teachers. Further, the majority of schools in Indonesia do not have a comprehensive learning program for its teachers to update their teaching practices. Available alternatives are short-term, unstructured, passive and lack 21st century relevance. Leading teachers to resort to outdated teaching methods insufficient to equip students with the skills of tomorrow.
How can School Leaders meaningfully create innovative learning environments without the right tools, strategies, and insights?
How can we demand our educators to innovate in the classrooms, if we are not innovating the way we are training them?
An effective approach to improving quality of schools is to invest in high quality school leaders and high-quality teachers. As Andreas Schleicher identified “The quality of an education system, will never exceed the quality of its teachers”.
Our solution is to bridge education and business by offering 21st century skills modules, digital resources, and cross industry networking opportunities for educators and school leaders. The aim is to offer high quality and transformative learning pathways for teachers and school leaders across Indonesia to inspire them and improve learning environments and teaching practices.
GenEd’s curriculum is uniquely designed to integrate the OECD’s PISA framework and 21st century mindset into simple and actionable exercises in schools and classroom.
This allows teachers to transform into explorers, researchers, designers, entrepreneurs - and sustainably reinvent the way they teach.
This way they are authentically empowered to increase classroom engagement and adapt learning focus, and equip students for the future.
With our technology-enabled platform, framework, and resources, we will be able to easily share our insights and scale the solution to other countries in the region.
At GenEd, we aim to empower educators and school leaders through 3 core innovation programs which seamlessly integrate business and education, accessible through a low-cost (1.5 USD/User/Month) web-based platform:
1. Innovation Learning:
We gathered academics and professionals across industries, compiled best practices, and developed bite-sized online learning journeys for teachers and school leaders with a range of 21st century topics: design thinking, entrepreneurial mindset, data literacy, information literacy and many more.
The learnings on our platform are experiential with multimedia elements (videos, podcasts, quizzes, reflections, coursework, downloadable digital tools). Focused actionable steps to innovate lesson delivery, the learnings are also fully adaptable for all subjects and all grade levels.
Depending on the technology capacity of the target schools, we can offer the learnings through a hybrid/ asynchronous/cohort-based format.
2. Innovation Library:
We curated a digital library of world's best and most innovative teaching practices (videos, lesson plans, evaluation rubrics, worksheets, coursework) as a source of inspiration to bring innovation to classrooms.
As part of our educator community building, teachers and school leaders (users) can also submit their contributions and help populate the digital library. As our user base grows, so will our digital resources.
3. Innovation Network:
Our networking services also allow teachers and school leaders to collaborate with other teachers, school leaders and industry professionals across our corporate (CSR) partners to co-create exciting and relevant lessons and school projects.
Our platform is uniquely structured to inspire Indonesian school leaders to lead innovation in their schools, and for educators to sustainably reinvent the way they teach and continuously adapt their lessons - so that they can help students develop skills to thrive in the future.
We believe that teachers must be placed at the center of the solution in solving Indonesia's and ASEAN's widening skills gap. Join us in reimagining education: together we can empower teachers, inspire generations, and transform a nation.
——-
In 2021, we have engaged 156 teachers in capacity building programs with 86% completion rate. Based on the positive response over our synchronous and asynchronous programs, we are optimistic on the sustainability to extend our programs from year on year. In 2022 we would like to bring 200+ schools across Indonesia to pilot our online leadership and educator empowerment programs as part of schools’ key strategies of achieving post covid-19 recovery.

"The benefits of this training are very good for educational development." Mrs. Nurbania's, Tapango Vocational High School
Currently, there are 300,000 school leaders and 2.6 million (formal and non-formal) Indonesian teachers nationwide across 273,968 schools, as well as future teachers. All vary in ages, experience, gender, and reside in rural and urban areas.
Unfortunately, school leaders and teachers have been consistently underserved as the majority of Indonesian schools do not have a structured leadership and teacher training program, while alternatives are often short-term, unstructured, passive and lack 21st century relevance. Furthermore, most Edtech products and educational programs focus on targeting children/students, whereas teachers and school leaders are often overlooked and underserved across all levels.
Due to this, School Leaders and Teachers are deprived of high quality and in-depth professional development and upskilling opportunities, and resort to outdated school management and teaching practices. Hence, learning outcomes remain stagnant and students fail to develop key skills for the future.
GenEd offers a cost-effective yet impactful solution by working with schools across Indonesia to adopt a long-term, structured, transformative learning journey and networking opportunities for school leaders and teachers throughout the year. Our primary focus is to assist disadvantage schools, including public schools across provinces and cities to improve learning outcomes of low-income students.
Our proprietary GenEd Learning Framework combines OECD’s PISA competencies (reading, mathematics, and science) with 21st century topics such as design thinking, data literacy, and entrepreneurial mindset – and breaks it down into simple, effective, actionable learning exercises adaptable to any school project, across all grades and subject.
Through our core innovation programs facilitated on our platform, teachers and school leaders undergo an experiential journey that:
- Develops key mindset as Leaders, Explorers (information literacy), Researchers (Data Literacy), Designers (Design Thinking), and Entrepreneurs (Entrepreneurial Mindset) to drive innovation in the classroom and beyond.
- Provides real insights into the skills demands of the future and the foundational competencies required to succeed.
- Expands their perspectives with the limitless possibilities on adapting classroom activities beyond traditional and conventional approach.
- Gently and habitually breaks down resistance to pedagogical experimentation and increases confidence in trying different formats of teaching activities
- Distinguishes itself from other training methods, whereby every session is treated as a multi-way brainstorming opportunity, whereby participants are empowered to contribute and realize the true collaborative power of the education community.
- Opens up peer-to-peer learning and support through the 1:1 and cohort-based sessions with other educators facing similar challenges.
- Help expand reach of network by facilitating meaningful dialogue, think tank and brainstorming activities with Industry experts in corporate sectors to adapt learning activities with real life applications.
- Meaningfully adapt classroom activities/learning exercises to better prepare students to succeed in the future of work.
Periodical and regular self-surveys and questionnaires is conducted to gain insight into challenges faced by and issues unique to each school and learning environment at a micro level. A tailored annual program is then designed based on the GenEd Innovation Learning Framework and in accordance to the needs of each School.
Across levels, it was found that ensuring adequate skills development and increased engagement from students is a deep concern prior, during, and post- pandemic. Due to its digital modulation, this solution is scalable to millions of teachers and schools in ASEAN.
Our power team is highly mission-driven to empower Indonesian teachers with classroom innovation practices through information literacy, data literacy, design thinking, and entrepreneurship.

A. Paving a meaningful learning journey for teachers and school leaders
School Leaders and Teachers in Indonesia have limited opportunities for professional development. Most schools do not have adequate learning pathways for school leaders or teachers, and external programs are inaccessible (language barrier), unstructured, passive, and lack 21st century relevance.
True to its mission to bridge the education sector with the business industry, GenEd’s solution is innovative as it has created the first-of its kind, high quality professional development opportunities for school leaders and teachers by:
- promoting synchronous & asynchronous (online) learning via the web-based platform and digital library;
- facilitating peer to peer & industry virtual networking and think-tank sessions.
- integrating relevant 21st century topics with core PISA Framework competencies i.e. information literacy, data literacy, design thinking, entrepreneurial mindset, with core competencies in reading, mathematics, and science skills.
Our learning solution combines evidence-based best teaching practices & pedagogies with technology. The programs empowers teachers and school leaders to bring innovation to the classrooms by employing and facilitating various mindsets (i.e. as a researcher, explorer, designer, and entrepreneur). At the core, GenEd’s programs encourage teachers to reinvent existing lesson plans into stimulating and engaging learning sessions.
Through access to the GenEd programs, teachers are continuously empowered to integrate information literacy, data literacy, design thinking, and entrepreneurship to every learning opportunity: for every subject, at every grade level, and school leaders for various school management strategies and school-wide projects.

3. Innovation Community Network
- GenEd offers the first Indonesian networking service that (virtually) pairs teachers/school leaders with 1) other educators/leaders for guided peer-mentorship sessions; and 2) industry professionals with relevant subject matter expertise to co-create innovative classroom/school activities & projects. Each educator is matched based on their roles (teacher/school leader), years of experience and student grade level.
- Each networking session is a guided process with deliverables to documentthe innovation. Under various CSR partnerships with GenEd, Companies sign up to be a part of the corporate network and authentically contribute to reimagining the future of education.
All three core programs are directed to engage, inspire, and push teachers out of their comfort zones in order to view their lesson delivery from a different lens and to adapt it to future skills.
C. Timeless benefit to pass on to the next generation of educators
Through our core innovation programs facilitated on our platform, teachers and school leaders undergo an experiential journey that:
- Expands their perspectives with the limitless possibilities on adapting classroom activities beyond traditional and conventional approach.
- Gently and habitually breaks down resistance to pedagogical experimentation and increases confidence in trying different formats of teaching activities
- Opens up peer-to-peer learning and support through the 1:1 and cohort based sessions with other educators facing similar challenges.
- Help expand reach of network by facilitating meaningful dialogue and brainstorming activities with Industry experts in corporate sectors.
GenEd’s impact is measured by the number of school leaders & teachers we empower, and students reached.
Our impact goals by 2023 to is to transform 1000 schools, empower 10,000 teachers, and impact 100,000 students. Respectively, by 2027 we aim to multiply our impact by transforming 10,000 schools, empowering 100.000 teachers, and impacting 1 million students.
Empowering teachers refers to providing opportunities to upskill& network, to increase their confidence in innovating the way they teach while effectively developing critical thinking for students.
School transformation refers to creating innovative learning environments enriched with active student-led and teacher-led innovations, demonstrating sense of agency and ownership of the learning process
Student impact addresses student outcomes and ability to interact with information meaningfully and development of adaptive & agile mindset.
By closely working together with schools as a learning ecosystem, we aspire to encourage continuous adoption of innovative pedagogies by teachers throughout lessons and further help students learn how to think and be prepared for the future challenges of the workforce.
We aim to achieve the above impact goals through various B2B2C (direct to schools & corporate sponsorships), B2C (direct to teachers), and B2C2C channels (individual sponsorships/crowdfunding), collaborative partnerships, as well as building community engagements and trust.
Through our community engagements, we aim to increase meaningful connection with our (active and potential) users, and engage in regular open dialogue to understand daily professional challenges. With this, we would be able to refine and develop new products to continue empower and support their learning journey - particularly to foster innovative learning environments in schools by integrating 21st century relevant mindsets. GenEd’s combination of asynchronous and cohort-based training across schools will further allow us to deeply connect with teachers and school leaders as our end users.
The main impact parameters of our programs are:
1. Outreach & Retention
The number of active users and subscribers indicate the outreach of the programs. Self-reported number of students per teacher, and number of teachers per school leaders indicate indirect impact for learners and school transformation.
2. Usability & Satisfaction
Data metrics (user drop-off points, time spent per course & coursework) from our learning management system and self-assessed surveys, measures user obstacles and satisfaction levels.
3. Confidence & Mindset
Self-assessment surveys embedded into the learning programs (pre-course, during, post-course), measure user confidence and inclination to experiment with different pedagogical strategies in class and schools.
4. Learning & Application
Quizzes completion and coursework submissions give insight to quality of knowledge absorbed and immediate application by users.
5. Adoption of learning
Follow-up calls and e-mail surveys 15, 30, 60, and 90 days upon completion of the learning journeys can identify level of mindset shift and transformation as an explorer, researcher, designer, entrepreneur and innovator.
6. Student Outcome
Measuring differences in student performance, participation, and engagement before new teaching strategy implementation and periodically after execution, indicate success.
7. School transformation
School self-reported increase in student-led extracurricular activities, improved teacher-led initiatives/projects, and increased positive feedback from parents on school improvements, indicate creation of innovative learning environments in school.

GenEd’s theory of change is that empowering teachers and school leaders is the key in inspiring generations and transforming the world.
The need to reshape the education landscape from traditional and conventional routines to a 5th industrial revolution approach is imminent. Particularly, to prepare next generations for challenges, responsibilities, and opportunities that don't yet exist, we need to empower, equip, and inspire teachers and school leaders.
We believe that our transformative online learning program would not only address previously limited upskilling opportunities and exposure to global best practices, but push for teachers and school leaders to adopt innovative mindsets as researchers, explorers, designers, entrepreneurs and innovators.
Consequently, school leaders will be able to identify the right strategies for managing school transformation for future skills, including providing the right support for its network of teachers. Teachers will be able to effectively integrate exercises and thinking processes that promote the innovative mindsets into their lessons - pushing the students to gain fundamental 21st century skills.
GenEd’s theory of change is centered on our belief that with sufficient engagement in regular and structured upskilling activities & exposure to global best teaching practices throughout the school year, Indonesian teachers and school leaders will gain actionable routines to implement in and bring innovation to their classrooms and schools.
Furthermore, by facilitating meaningful collaborations between individual teachers/school leaders with business industry professionals, we will empower educators with authentic insights into skills demands of the business sector and provide the confidence to reinvent their lessons to better prepare students for the future. Hence, Teachers and school leaders would have no shortage of inspiration all year- and would be able to sustainably reinvent the way they teach.
As school leaders and teachers transform from the traditional instructors into skilled leaders, explorers, researchers, designers, entrepreneurs and innovators - students will benefit in the short term from differentiation strategies, different sensory and intellectual stimulation, and various thinking perspectives through increased interaction, engagement and participation.
Consequently, in the long-term students will also emulate the innovative mindset, develop critical thinking skills, and build various literacies key to thriving in the fourth industrial revolution and beyond. Once every student has access to lessons delivered by informed, inspired, and innovative teachers, equitable quality education would be successfully attained.
GenEd’s products and services has real potential to catalyze positive change in education, by reimagining how to meaningfully connect business & education through empowering teachers. In turn, students will flourish as future problem solvers, entrepreneurs, changemakers, and designers.
