Psychological Help Intime
In China, around 100,000 teenagers commit suicide every year, and two suicides and six attempts happen in every two minutes.Suicide has become the second leading cause of death among adolescents in China, second only to deaths caused by accidents. According to the research data of the Institute of Psychology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the detection rate of anxiety symptoms among Chinese teenagers is 26% to 30%, while the detection rate of depression is 15.4% on average, and the probability of the occurrence of suicidal thoughts among middle school students is 17.7% on average. Mental illnesses have large and long-term negative effects on students' school performances. However, most Chinese students, parents, and teachers lack adequate knowledge of mental illness and often tend to ignore this issue or feel shameful to talk about it. The increasing numbers of suicides among teenagers need more attention and solutions. I hope the Psychological Help Intime app can help students with mental problems in middle schools and high schools get help in time to prevent potential suicides. Ultimately, the app is hoped to be launched and open for all students in China, so theoratically any Chinese student having access to a cellphone or a computer (the solution also include online websites and other possible contact formats besides the app). To start with, a pilot project can be implemented in a local middle school or high school in China. In 2020, the number of underage Internet users in China reached 183 million, and the Internet penetration rate was 94.9 percent. If the app and relative platform can effectively come into use, millions of youths will be affacted and helped. Psychological Help Intime aims to strengthen the publicity of mental health knowledge recognized by professional psychologists with credible citations, offer understandable and clear guidance for seeking professional help, and have 24h online listeners to listen to students' problems, connect them with further help, and support them to improve their performance at schools.
Describe your solution and how it works in simple terms.
Psychological Help Intime is a platform with several formats such as online websites, app, Wechat account and small programs, etc.
It mainly offers services of 24h online listeners for students in need, and provide students with information of useful and understandable psychological knowledge and near access to more professional help.
This product needs professional psychologists or psychological professors to give credible and recognized content that help to build trust and change mindsets of people who are scared of mental illnesses. It also needs UX, UI designers, app developers (programmers), a system for recuiting and training a certain amount of listeners and building connections with local psychologists and educators.
All Chinese middle school and high school students with mental problems or potential suicidal thoughts. Most of these students and their parents or even teachers, have limited knowledge of mental illnesses and often supress any talks related to this topic. In most China's towns and cities, lack of or no medical resources for mental problems and professional psychological assistance are preventing students from getting help. Psychologica Help Intime can use Internet as a way to reach to students across the country, and provide them with access and ways to find professional help and support them to get through tough times, enabling them to finish schoolwork with less anxiety and depressed emotions. It can decrease the risk of suicides by talking and comforting students with extreme emotions (China's suicide hotline is ALWAYS busy and need to wait for more than hours to get help). Also, with professionals recognized psychological knowledge, students can use it better communicate with their parents who are often more reluctant to talk about it than the new generations.
Honestly, this product is still in concept. I do not have a team yet, but I do know a lot of people that are related to this issue and some of them can attribute great help to this project. Personally I am a person with depression since middle school, and I have friends or their families with similar conditions working in different areas. My relationship network includes students with mental issues, psychological counselors, psychiatrists, and educators in my local middle and high schools from which I graduated.
My knowledge of my targeted users and the communities are mostly from my personal experience. If the project can be developed further, I hope to create clearer data and have more formal interviews with the targeted users to know their exact needs in detail.

- Technology (e.g. software or hardware, web development/design, data analysis, etc.)
My solution provides a new way for offering free and quick psychological help espcially created for students in middle school and high school in China. (Most existing hotlines or psychological apps do not have quick response to students even when they are in danger, and many of these apps charge expensive fees that students cannot afford)
I expect this solution can decrease the risk of suicidal rates of young students in China, make psychological help accessible to all students and families, change people's mindsets and attitudes towards mental illnesses, notice the great impacts that mental health have on students' performance and their future studies and careers.
The solution is still a concept. If resouces required are gathered and the products can be launched successfully, a large number of students and families can be helped in 5 years.
Number of students we have reached.
Number of students that got professional help from us.
Number of listeners, psychologists, and other partners we have build connections with.
By using the app and the platforms, students can get immediate help and get the basic information about how to improve their mental health conditions. In the short-term, students will know more about their mental conditions and how to help themselves or where to seek help, and have more leverage to communicate with their parents for getting more professional help. In the long-term, students' mental health and school performance will improve, anxiety level goes down, and their relationship with families will improve, too. Also, they can share their knowledge with other students or people in need.
