Improving People's Overall Health
The Problems
- Physical Health
According to the hunger data from the California Association of Food Banks,
"Californians facing food insecurity: ~8 million
On average, 1 out of every 5 Californians does not know where their next
meal will come from — with greater levels of hunger experienced by Black
and Latinx families."
2. Mental Health
In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic spread throughout the world and affected the San Francisco Bay Area. The San Francisco Bay Area was called the "Old Gold Mountain." This region used to be the hub of prosperity. Sadly, living conditions have drastically changed because of the wildfires, the recent pandemic, unemployment, high taxes, high cost of living, health conditions, substance abuse, and crime. For these reasons, California has a high poverty rate and homelessness.
Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic caused mental health problems throughout this region, the United States, and the world. According to the National Alliance on Mental Health in 2020, “1 in 5 experienced a mental illness. 1 in 20 experienced a serious mental illness. 1 in 15 experienced both a substance use disorder and mental illness. 12+ million had serious thoughts of suicide.”
People around the world experienced mental health problems as well. The World Health Organization, Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation, and Global Health Data Exchange state that in 2020, “Approximately 280 million people in the world have depression. At its worst, depression can lead to suicide. Over 700,000 people die due to suicide every year. Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death in 15-29-year-olds.”
3. Environmental Health
