The current healthcare financing system in sierra Leone is not sustainable and the country has one of the highest out-of-pocket expenditures on health. In 2014 alone people spent about 2.9 trillion Leones out of their pocket for healthcare. Today, many families delay treatment and, during health emergencies, are force to deplete their savings, pledge their assets, borrow from friends and relatives or rely on informal moneylenders for emergency cash.
The country healthcare financing system is quasi inexistent as most low-income families have very limited access to health insurance and must pay most health-related expenses out of pocket;
Commercial insurance companies typically don’t cater to lower-income groups;
Informal workers, in peri-urban and rural areas, do not have access to the healthcare they need.
We offer a reliable mobile-based micro- health wallet insurance with which people can save, insure and pay for healthcare services. Users will use their mobile phones to pay for and access preferred medical treatments.
This service will provide affordable health insurance cover on a pre-paid basis and it will cover primary care, e.g., medical exams, consultation with certified doctor, and prescription for medicines. Lab tests, such as x-rays, and major medical care level such as surgeries to low income families. The platform allows participants to pay their insurance by using mobile money transfers (orange and Africell Money), cash transfers, donation or remittance fund from families abroad.
Our Business priority is to create the first truly accessible health-care plan for low-income Sierra Leoneans.
Sierra Leone has a sizeable population of slightly over 7 million people. The population is projected to increase to 10 million by 2030 and 14 million by 2036 respectively. The country’s increasing urbanization and other socio-economic activities pose serious environmental challenges.
Most Lower and middle class Sierra Leonean cannot afford expensive treatments for healthcare, especially chronic diseases and primary care. SierraMedics believe that every individual is entitled to health coverage, an increasingly fundamental need in everyday life. We target and provides affordable micro health insurance cover to lower and middle class sierra Leonean.
Health insurance is still novel in sierra Leone and there are millions of sierra Leonean yet to tap into the immense benefits of health insurance. MySanté customers will primarily be the Informal workers and their families. Working with such component of the population will give the company valuable insights and data on the needs of the groups it aimed to serve. We will then expand our focus to include the.

I have been exploring programs and opportunities where I can acquire more knowledge and share my experience related to Entrepreneurship and Tech innovation for social impact. I believe, the MIT Solve Programme will be a great opportunity for me to:

MySante App is a micro “Wallet’’ health insurance scheme that can be accessed on mobile (smart phone & GSM cellular phone) with which people can save, insure and pay for healthcare services. This service will provide affordable health insurance cover on a pre-paid basis and it will cover primary care, e.g., medical exams, consultation with certified doctor, and prescription for medicines.
The scheme will allow subscribers to gain access to pre-defined treatments and the freedom to choose their own healthcare provider from all registered partners across Sierra Leone.
In order to make MySante App insurance services more comprehensible and accessible to customers, we will use mobile phone service providers to reach potential customers by prioritizing rapid processing and enabling insurance deposit subscription via mobile money.

To the average sierra Leonean on the street, ‘insurance’ is a strange luxury, Very few of them really know how insurance works, and the number of those that are aware of health insurance are even fewer. In the first year, we hope to offer the service on pilot basis and get views from our client to improve the services. During this time, we would study the market and get to know our actual market size and customers reaction to the services. That is why; we will invest considerable resources in marketing activities because it will be very important to position the brand when entering the market.

MySante App business model is inclusive and based on a partnership between the company and a network of health providers. The company will collaborates with more than 100 health partners, including over 70 pharmacy and drug stores, 15 hospital, 20 private clinic and 200 community health workers. By acting as a broker, the company designs products and manage the back end, negotiates with partners and structures work processes.
The level of coverage depends on how much money the participants save in their Wallet to help cover their future healthcare needs. The payment of the service render by the health provider is directly deducted from the participant healthWallet account.
To cover the costs of it operations, MySante app charges its partners (Pharmacy, drugstore, clinic...) a fee of 10% upon each referral.
