BERBUAH, planting fruit trees in urban areas
Social and natural issues such as waste management and climate change are still thorny issues. Maybe because of the way we see and find solutions to these problems partially even though we know all things are interrelated.
About data on waste and the increasing temperature of the earth can be obtained easily by searching on the internet. For example, in Indonesia where I live now, Indonesia currently produces at least 64 million tons of waste every year. Based on this data, about 60 percent of the waste is transported and stored in the landfill, 10 percent of the waste is recycled, while the other 30 percent is not managed and pollutes the environment (Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) Data, 2020)
The use of fossil energy reaches 82% in 2020, making the energy sector the largest contributor to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Indonesia (45.7% in addition to emissions from forests and land use) according to the Indonesia Climate Action 2021 report.
Our solution seeks to increase public awareness of waste issues and climate change by sorting waste from homes and planting fruit tree seedlings in urban areas. Using IoT and mapping technology, where everyone who contributes will be recorded and can share with their closest neighbors and can benefit from their actions.
BERBUAH is a combination of people, machines, platforms, and knowledge to create alternative waste recycling systems and climate change approaches that respect the environment and the growth of fruit trees in urban areas.
Identify the target group that will benefit and can synergize with each other.
The first target is housewives who live in urban areas, the number will vary in each city. Especially for the campaign target on household waste management and awareness of climate change.
The second target is hobbyists who plant at home, process organic waste and can do plant nurseries at home. The number of these hobbyists can vary in each city. It is estimated that there are more than 1 million plant hobbyists in urban Indonesia.
The third target is sellers of fruit plant seeds, almost every city estimates the number with a pessimistic count of 10,000 small businesses.
Our key resources are people who are experts in the field of fruit plant nurseries, a team that has expertise in their respective fields, and also has knowledge management database experience.
Our assets are local networks and cultural and linguistic similarities.
- Support local economies that protect high-carbon ecosystems from development, including peatlands, mangroves, and forests.
- Concept
We have financial, technical, legal and market barriers. So we try to join Solve global challenges in order to get in touch with partners who can help advance our solutions through monetary and/or non-monetary support.
- Business model (e.g. product-market fit, strategy & development)
The solution offered is a new approach as well as an improvement from the existing solutions for the problem of waste management and climate change. Previously, the existing solutions were only specific to certain issues, such as waste management or climate change, but in this solution, we offer that there are alternative solutions to solve the problem of waste and climate change with actions that are easy for everyone to take, namely by processing waste at home and planting fruit trees. The main hope of this solution is to raise awareness and become real action while also changing the market in a more positive and sustainable direction.
The positive impact of this effort will have an impact on social, economic, environmental, lifestyle, and public policy impacts. In the next 1-5 years will have an impact on:
People and Community
1. More and more people and communities are concerned about the vision and mission of BERBUAH, supporting the waste management movement from home and conducting fruit tree nurseries in urban areas.

3. Creating commercial profits for the community that works with this business
4. Reducing unemployment
Planet
1. The increased green area that produces oxygen
2. The environment is cleaner and more beautiful
3. Availability of natural food fruits
Income Streams
Income from consulting services, cooperation, donors, grants, CSR, and others.
To measure impact and progress, it will be seen from:
1. Many people and communities care about the vision and mission of BERBUAH, which is to support the waste management movement from home and to do fruit tree nurseries in urban areas.
2. Increasing green areas that produce oxygen in the urban environment so that the environment is cleaner and more beautiful
3. Availability of natural food fruits that are easy and cheap in the neighborhood
4. There is cooperation with various stakeholders in the issue of waste management and climate change
Indonesia is currently one of the member countries of the WTO (World Trade Organization). Where trade between countries in the world is very open, as long as it can be mutually beneficial for both parties.
Likewise, with Indonesian fruits in 2016, exports of round coconut, mangosteen, and bananas amounted to 564,372 tons and 176 other types of fruit were in great demand by world consumers. Indonesian round coconuts are routinely exported to China, Thailand, Japan, and 16 other countries. For mangosteen products, Indonesia has also exported to 29 countries. Meanwhile, Japan, China, and Malaysia are the third largest importing countries for bananas from Indonesia.
Indonesian fruits are produced from land in villages and special plantations. Imagine if fruit production could be produced from an urban environment. So economically it can increase income greater. But this solution is not just an economic calculation, it is more about building an equal society and can work together to meet daily food needs and also reduce the impact of climate change.
The technology used by BERBUAH is a combination of humans, machines, platforms, and knowledge to create alternative systems for recycling waste and reducing the impact of climate change that respects the environment and the growth of fruit trees in urban environments.

The BERBUAH business model has been simplified into a web-app-based platform to become a place for people at home to transact and share the results of organic waste management and home-produced plant seed products.
Total Available Market
The market for fruit seeds in the Indonesian market is approximately 1 million trees a year. Meanwhile, the price per tree varies depending on the type of fruit seed and age. If the average for 1 tree is 2.5 USD, then in a year there is a potential of 25 million USD. There is no market for organic compost and home planting tools. The market potential for organic compost is greater because it is not only used for fruit tree seedlings but also ornamental plants, etc. Pessimistic forecast of 10 million USD/year. As for planting tools such as earthen spoons, sacks, pots, etc. Market potential with a pessimistic count of 15 million / year. So the total potential is around 50 million/year.
Identify the target market
The first target is housewives, with a total of 10% of the total population of Indonesia, there are about 30 million people. The second target is for plant hobbyists, it is estimated that there are more than 1 million people, and the third is the small business of fruit plant nurseries, which is estimated to have 10 thousand SMEs.
Strategy
Using cooperation and collaboration strategies in 3 ways:
1. Online strategy using social media, websites, webinars, and ad online
2. Offline strategy, for example with community meetings, workshops, etc.
3. Broadcast strategies such as radio/tv talk shows, etc.
- Individual consumers or stakeholders (B2C)
To generate money and be able to fund this work, the plan is to use a combination of funding, namely through ongoing donations and grants, sales of products and services, service contracts to the government, or sustainable green investment capital raising. The point of this funding is to be able to cover expenses and get the difference as profit.
Cooperation with the local environmental office to plant 1000 fruit trees in urban slums by inviting the community to support the activity.
