AI x Well-rounded Training

There are quite a number of cases showing that the officers have used inappropriate violence. When extreme violence has caused victims serious injury or death, some officers even employ illegal tactics to instill fear and prevent justice from taking its course. We think that this issue is unacceptable and should be stopped to avoid hurting the citizens physically and mentally. From different news and research, we find out that many agencies do not concentrate on training and evaluating officers’ interpersonal skills (e.g., active listening, problem solving, persuasion, and conflict management) but indeed the officers should be highly capable of these skills to execute tactical and legal tasks. Therefore, we believe that training is very important to enhance officers’ necessary skills for tackling similar cases. Besides, tracking officers’ behavior and attitude is essential for snipping the abnormality in advance effectively.

As mentioned, training is very important to ensure every officer is beyond qualification. There will be well-rounded training for officers. If shooting is needed, officers should shoot at less important positions, e.g., arm and leg, with their weak hand at first. Implicit Bias Training aims to help officers better manage their biases. Training officers’ interpersonal skills can reduce misunderstandings to avoid tragedy.

There should be a sharing part and discussion session organized monthly or after a major issue occurred to review current practice. Punishment is needed to improve overall discipline and send out a clear message that overusing violence is not tolerated. Moreover, adequate supervision by an external party is required to monitor the performance of officers. To enhance the accuracy and efficiency of the process, CCTV should be upgraded to deliver clearer images to monitor officers’ performance and AI can increase the accuracy of distinguishing people and objects.

We describe our solution as “Concept”. Although we propose the ideas and we are very clear and confident about the next steps, we need further support from external parties to offer high-quality CCTV integrated with AI and organize different training for making our ideas work in reality.
