Easy and affordable sanitation in backward areas
Use of lemongrass can eradicate mosquito borne menace and diseases spread from lack of sanitation without using water and can save people’s life
Problem:
An estimated 801,000 children younger than 5 years of age die from mosquito borne diseases and diseases such as typhoid and Jaundice which are developed from lack of sanitation.
Hypothesis:
Use of lemongrass can prevent growth of some disease causing bacteria. Some bacteria had shown high resistance towards different antibiotics whereas they were found to be inhibited by lemongrass oil even at lower concentration.
Methodology:
So if one leaf is cut into several pieces and is kept in every class at the time of lunch break and children will be asked to take one piece of leaf and rub a it between their palms, then oil will be produced and thus hands become germs free.
Solution:
Use of lemongrass and citronella grass in sanitation can eradicate mosquito borne diseases and other diseases that spread from lack of sanitation. It can also provide sanitation without using water and can save both people’s life and water.
I would like to mention that there is severe sanitation problem in economically backward areas of India and globe. It is essentially required to maintain hygiene without water. As we know that there is scarcity of water in India. Most of the Indian village people do not wash their hands before eating, some villagers rub their hands with mud and they consume their food with contaminated hands which cause of their illness or sometime death. Many children die every year because of poor sanitation. I want to decrease this problem the illness or death of children as children are the future of our country. An estimated 2.5 billion people lack access to improved sanitation (more than 35% of the world’s population). According to the World Health Organization and UNICEF, regions with the lowest coverage of "improved" sanitation (https://www.cdc.gov/healthywat... global/assessing.html) in 2006 were sub-Saharan Africa (31%), Southern Asia (33%) and Eastern Asia (65%). In 2006, 7 out of 10 people without access to improved sanitation were rural inhabitants (Source: https:// www.cdc.gov/healthywater/globa... assessing.html). An estimated 801,000 children younger than 5 years of age perish from diarrhoea each year, mostly in developing countries. Unsafe drinking water, inadequate availability of water for hygiene, and lack of access to sanitation together contribute to about 88% of deaths from diarrheal diseases (Source: https://www.cdc.gov/healthywat... /global/wash_ statistics. html).
If people will pluck one piece of leaf of lemon grass plant or citronella grass plant, and would rub it between their palms they would be disease free. If all rural people grow the lemon grass and use its leaves in cleaning their hands at least some people lives would be saved. Another big problem is mosquitoes which cause diseases like dengue which sometimes prove to be fatal. I also have seen many cases of dengue last year in Dehradun which is rather considered a clean city in India. In Delhi there were so many dengue patients that there were no beds empty for patients. Dengue is caused by a virus which is transmitted primarily by the mosquito Aedes aegypti, which is commonly found around homes and workplaces. Epidemic dengue has become more common since the 1980s. I also want to decrease this problem by crating awareness about cultivation of citronella and lemon grass in schools and rural areas.
Target group: People of rural areas of India and school children of rural schools
- If the villagers (who are not so educated or soap or hand wash is unavailable) rub their hands with lemon grass or citronella grass every time before eating they will be saved from fatal diseases like dengue, cholera,)
- As the main occupation of village is farming if farms are attacked with microorganisms or pests which cause disease in plants. Rural people would be ruined so if they plant lemon grass or citronella grass they would save their crops.
- If people of rural as well as urban places will use these plants as mosquito repellent we will save many electricity and also when the chemical mosquito repellents refills are made waste discharged by factories is dumped down in the rivers which causes pollution if we do not use such chemically made mosquito repellents we can save our environment from pollution.
- If people will pluck one piece of leaf of lemon grass plant or citronella grass plant, and would rub it between their palms they would be disease free. If all rural people grow the lemon grass and use its leaves in cleaning their hands at least some people lives would be saved. Another big problem is mosquitoes which cause diseases like dengue which sometimes prove to be fatal.
- First I want a piece of plot of 3 by 3 meters and 30 to 40 earthen pots
- Then citronella and lemon grass plants will be grown in plots and earthen pots and when they grow plants should be transferred into earthen pots.
- Then these pots will be transferred in schools and villages and one awareness program will be organized in some school of rural area as no soap is present in the government schools, if soap is present the soap is so dirty that children do not want to wash their hands with that soap. So if one leaf is cut into several pieces (1-2 inches) and is kept in every class at the time of lunch break and children will be asked to take one piece of leaf and rub their hands, by this way better sanitation will be provided to the rural school going children. Similarly one or two pots will be kept at the gate of every house or rural area. It will give them a better sanitation. People would use it for cleaning their hands if they rub a piece of lemon grass between our palm oil will be produced and thus hands become germs free.

- Concept: An idea being explored for its feasibility to build a product, service, or business model based on that idea

- A new use of an existing technology (e.g. application to a new problem or in a new location)
Lemon grass and citronella grass are proved to have antibacterial properties. Antibacterial activity of lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) oil against common diseases causing bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) was investigated by Mohd Irfan Naik et al. (2010). The tested organisms, particularly gram-negative organisms had shown high resistance towards different antibiotics whereas they were found to be inhibited by lemongrass oil even at lower concentration. Thus lemongrass oil is effective against drug resistant organisms. It can be suggested that use of lemon grass oil/leaves is very helpful in protecting us against diseases and may provide better and cheaper sanitation to the school going children and rural people. Similarly citronella grass is also reported to have mosquito/flies/ticks repellent properties, insecticidal properties and antibacterial properties.
