Furniture Bay
We buy second hand furniture and refurbish it by using environment friendly techniques and material .
We buy second hand furniture and refurbish it . This saves a lot of trees in the process as the raw material is already being supplied by the second hand furniture .
I am trying to solve climate change . The whole world , not just humans , every species is affected by it . The accumulation of green house gases in the atmosphere is the most major cause of it . The gases trap the heat and don’t let it escape . The main contributing gas is carbon dioxide . The trees are the best weapon in our fight against climate change yet we mercilessly cut them down everyday in huge quantities for commercial purposes . They utilise the carbon dioxide in the air and release oxygen . Climate change has lead to droughts , melting of ice caps , severe storms , air pollution and much more. According to an article by United Nations , we have till 2030 to reverse this situation or else we will reach the point of no return . We need to protect the trees reduce the burden we ourselves have put on them .
The target population - the young, environment - conscious people looking to move in on a budget . Furniture prices are rising and just one chair is also very expensive nowadays . Furniture also uses a lot of trees in its production . Furniture bay provides comfortable and luxurious furniture at a very affordable rate . Now everyone can join the fight against climate change and help save the environment .
I worked at my dad’s company recently to get to know the process of furniture making better and all the material that I would need to upcycle the furniture . His company makes retail fixtures for other companies like SONY and LG . I got a lot of helpful tips from the people there and would definitely implement them in my products . I also went door to door in my colony and asked for criticism on my prototype . I received a positive feedback and opinions on how to improve my products .
- Taking action to combat climate change and its impacts (Sustainability)
- Prototype: A venture or organization building and testing its product, service, or business model
I recently developed a prototype of a wooden cabinet . I created in a warehouse that I rented to get acquainted with the process and test the techniques in day to day use . Some people from my colony also tested the prototype and found that it functioned smoothly .
- A new use of an existing technology (e.g. application to a new problem or in a new location)
We see everywhere the idea of recycle and reuse being promoted . So I applied the idea of recycle and reuse to furniture whilst maintaining the comfort and luxury at an affordable price . Furniture is a major culprit of the deforestation . 15.3 billion trees get down annually ,according to a study by “nature.com” . 10% of the trees being cut are for furniture . Imagine the impact we can have by switching to upcycling . So by using a very basic technique that everyone knows of , I have applied it to an industry where the technique of recycle and reuse is needed the most .
- Manufacturing Technology
- India
I have not launched the idea right now . I am just collecting data and opinions of people to make sure that the products are as comfortable as they can be . I expect to attract people in my state , Delhi, for the first year . I am starting small but thinking big , for the first year , it is scalable for me . There is a growing number of aware people wanting to switch to environment friendly products and Furniture Bay is a perfect place to start . By slowly but steadily reducing the number of trees being cut and encouraging this switch to upcycling , the impact will be seen on the environment which in turn impacts us all .
i want to create a noticeable impact within my community . The first step towards change is becoming aware that there is a need to change . By spreading awareness , I want to create an environment conscious community that encourages eco friendly methods , not just with furniture but everything that they do or buy and would like to see this way of life multiply and spread to all the people .
i measure my progress by amount of people made aware and eco friendly . Each person transformed is 1 unit of success . I would like to reach to atleast 1000 units in the first year. The more people that join this movement against climate change , the better .
Due to the newness of the company , the people might not trust the products over the existing companies and people might think that because the raw material is second hand , the furniture won’t be as good as the ones the existing companies produce . This mental barrier that people have might pose a challenge but I’m determined to make a change.
I am passionate about the environment and determined to protect in any way I can . My experience with all the companies I volunteered at made me see that people sometimes have a good idea but are unable to implement it and sustain it . I know how to sustain a company and deeply care about the topic I’m working on . Customers get poor service from companies , especially after sale service and all the problems people face generally in a company , I will make sure to not replicate .
I still work in my dad’s company to know more and more about the process of furniture making and the business side of it too . How to promote the products and the finances too .

Furniture Bay is an idea that seeks to combat climate change . Such a task requires a lot of resources . With the Pozen Social Innovation Prize , we can expand to different parts of the world and get even more people under our umbrella for the fight against climate change . There can never be too many people . Climate change is a major problem and we need sufficient resources to deal with it. We can make upcycled furniture accessible to everyone with the necessary resources and when everyone starts to use it , the amount of trees we save is tremendous . By saving trees , we not just combat climate change , we save the homes of animals too . We need to understand the importance of trees and while it may seem so easy to understand , a lot of people still ,carelessly cut them down . The problem is widespread , and so to deal with a problem of this scale , we need the necessary tools . I truly believe that by winning the Pozen Social Innovation Prize , we can use it to something good and take a major step towards combating this huge problem we face in our lives . We not only help change the lives of a certain group of people , it’s for every living species on Earth .
