Tellus
An application to motivate everyone around the world to recycle, by rewarding and educating people on the impact they would make if they recycle.
My solution is an application that can let the user have track of everything they have been recycling and the impact that has made or to what it would be equivalent. For example, if the user reports day by day the plastic that they have been recycling and the total amount sums to 10kg of plastic recycled at that moment, the application will calculate other things that are equivalent to what he recycled.
Since the best way to make people engage in the solving of a problem is by showing them how impactful their help is, Tellus will inform the user that making 10kg of plastic generates 60kg of CO2 emissions which is equal to what a 250 passenger plane emits traveling from Stuttgart to Munich and that by recycling they saved at least a staggering 30 percent of what the original process would have emitted. showing them how impactful their help is.
The application will also include a map from where the user lives with nearby recycling points, the user will also have to verify what they recycled, and once that is done they will be able to claim rewards in the rewards store, such as discount codes or even money or cryptocurrency transactions.
Tellus will help to extenuate climate change, the global mean temperature for 2021 (based on data from January to September) was about 1.09°C above the 1850-1900 average. Climate change is a global problem that cannot be ignored, each year the weather is getting more unpredictable and extreme and more and more species are getting extinct, yet most people still don't focus on recycling or changing in order to help solve this problem.
Climate change can only be solved if everyone contributes a bit, but consequently various solutions for climate change have not been able to get done mostly because of economic barriers. Tellus is breaking the barrier between economic impediments in order to help reduce climate change
Unfortunately from what can be observed if you ask people to for example start recycling most people say they won’t and justify it by saying that their change still wont change the world. The thing is that it will, and the aim of Tellus is to motivate, reward and show their users how their change is actually significant.
My solution serves everyone, nonetheless the lives that Tellus could have a higher impact on are on the people that are not in a good financial situation. The solution will address their needs by proportioning their users with extra revenue from recycling. Tellus will be capable to help everyone, specially by motivating people to create a better future for themselves, their loved ones and the world.
- Taking action to combat climate change and its impacts (Sustainability)
- Concept: An idea being explored for its feasibility to build a product, service, or business model based on that idea
Tellus's development stage is currently a concept since it requires a lot of technical, entrepreneurial, and legal knowledge. To this date I am still intensively learning about all those three topics to help Tellus become a reality, apart from that I'm also conducting research on the potential use of recycled products for construction. Currently, the construction sector contributes to 23% of air pollution, 40% of drinking water pollution, and 50% of landfill wastes. In the hopes that when Tellus becomes well known worldwide, recycled products could go somewhere else instead of their local recycling point to potentially use them for future constructions.
- A new use of an existing technology (e.g. application to a new problem or in a new location)
Since tellus is an application that anyone could make use of in their phone the core technology that would power my solution is software and blockchain both for the development and functioning of the application.
- Blockchain
- Software and Mobile Applications
- Spain
My solution has not been launched yet, but since it is a solution that will directly and meaningfully affect almost everyone, and everyone can make use of it. The number that could be expected of people served by my solution once it is fully developed by next year would be 100,000+.
The main impact goals of Tellus is to help reduce climate change as well as help people financially.
Climate change is exacerbating to its peak, consequently, that involves even more extreme weather that unfortunately involves in some regions the loss of their homes. Tellus aims to motivate people to help solve this problem which in the long run could help stop climate change.
It would also help people financially since the people that prove to recycle and register it in the app will be capable to earn "coins" in the app that can be used in the rewards store. The rewards store is mainly thought to contain discount codes that can be redeemed by using the obtained coins, nonetheless, there would also be the option that the coins could also be traded into money or cryptocurrency transfers.
Tellus also aims to invest the money that people donate and the investors' money in research to efficient and sustainable construction made primarily from recycled materials, thus once having reunited enough capital Tellus will be capable to also impact peoples lives by constructing new homes to the ones that have lost everything due to natural disasters and other circumstances.
The current barriers for the successful development of Tellus are mainly financial and technical. I'm still learning by myself about everything needed such as coding and entrepreneurship to successfully develop Tellus, despite that it will take me a lot of time. Without a financial barrier, I could get help from experienced developers to also remove the technical barrier.
I am from Spain and the Dominican Republic, having lived in both countries I was able to experience the quality of life in two completely different places. From that, I was also able to observe the circumstances that other people lived in. Both countries make, from my point of view, an unnecessary use of plastic along with other long-lasting polluting residues.
I have always been concerned about climate change and the change that could be done to solve this problem, there could be multiple solutions but unfortunately, most of the efficient solutions will not be done by most people. That's what inspired me to develop Tellus, a simple yet potentially effective application that could not only help reduce the impact of climate change yet be able to help people's lives by recycling. In order to deliver the solution, I have been learning about coding and entrepreneurship, trying to get the most knowledge I can before making Tellus a reality.
- Yes
I am qualified for this prize since I meet all the eligibility requirements and my solution is addressing sustainability issues which in the case of my solution is climate change.
The HP Girls Save the World prize would drastically advance my solution since it would be used in the complete and correct development of the application. The prize would be used for the marketing of the application to get it to be known worldwide since needs the help of the users to help the change be a reality, the prize would also be invested in partnering with companies that could help potentiate Tellus worldwide and that are doing research in the use of recycled materials for building homes, in the hopes that everything recycled by Tellus users could be used in the making of homes for those in need.
