Neotalk
Neotalk's idea is to create an anonymous connection to a counsellor.
Neotalk aims to create the connection between students and teachers alike anonymously. My team and I have built a web app and a mobile app that is still in development.
The idea behind it is that one feels more secure channeling personal problems without having their identity revealed to anyone.
Being high school students, we have witnessed plenty of personal problems that students face. These problems can be solved by a counselor, Nevertheless, students hardly approach them.
What will my peers think of me? Will they think I am weak? What will the counselor think of me? These are a few of the reasons that prevent one from visiting a counselor. A day passes and one feels ok, the thought of reaching a counselor stops ringing in the mind.
A few more days pass and one begins realizing that it's only getting worse. Things begin getting on top of the person, the troubles are only piling up and one finds themselves falling into a pit of anxiety, stress, depression among other mental problems.
This is a scenario that can happen to anyone, students and adults alike. This happens in our communities even though we may not realize it.
As for the moment, our solution is aimed at schools; learners will be the priority while also welcoming school staff to use the platform. Students often face stress, depression, or get overwhelmed by a personal problem. This may lead to drug abuse, harming oneself, or even worse. These are among the problems we will solve for the end-users.
This is where Neotalk comes in with the primary aim of anonymously relaying one’s personal issues to a counselor. Other features that we have been rolling out include education on various things that occur in day-to-day life such as bullying, criticism, handling rumors, counseling, and more. Other essentials provided in the platform are a meditation guide and a games section.
We are planning on adding additional features related to matters of mental health and counseling.
The idea of neotalk is influenced by problems we have witnessed in our community such as stress, depression, suicide attempts among others. We have also reached to the counselors to get their views on what a product like Neotalk could accomplish. We also questioned fellow students to get their opinions.
We also have a feedback panel where users can send their opinions and improvement requests to us. We use this information to further improve the platform.
- Improving learning opportunities and outcomes for learners across their lifetimes, from early childhood on (Learning)
- Pilot: An organization deploying a tested product, service, or business model in at least one community
Guided by our mentors and the school’s counseling and IT departments, my team and I launched the platform in our school, Mpesa Foundation Academy. It was favorably received by the students as well as the counseling department.
The feedback we received from the counselors made the hustle worthwhile. More students were reaching out to the counselors through the platform.
- A new project or business that relies on technology to be successful
We first built the front end of the web app in HTML, CSS, and Javascript. We are planning to switch our codebase to React before it becomes too large to maintain. The web app is hosted in Netlify, currently using Netlify's subdomain as we're yet to acquire a domain; www.neotalk.care. Our backend is powered by Node.js with two database candidates; Firebase or MongoDB.
The mobile app is made in React Native for ease of cross-platform code maintenance and uniformity. The app's UI and functionality are still in development. The backend is powered by the same tech stack as the front end, that is Node.js, and the database we're yet to choose: Firebase or MongoDB.
We chose Javascript as our main programming language because most of us are conversant with it, though we're not limited to it. As the project grows and demands the use of other programming languages, we will opt out of Javascript.

Being in the pilot phase of the project, we have only launched it in Mpesa Foundation Academy which has over 600 students and over 300 members of staff. We promised our users not to collect any personal data and maintain anonymity, therefore we opted did not to add any tracking features. The school we study in is the testing ground for the platform. We plan to make Neotalk a Software as a Service by leasing it to institutions via a subscription.
By the next year, we hope to have made people's lives much easier by speaking up about their personal problems. We also hope to have a full build of the whole platform up and running. Two of the members of the team are in their final year of high school and will now have more time to pursue software development.
Therefore by next year, we plan to complete the full build of the whole platform including optimizations, social media, launching the app to app stores, etc. After that, we will be working on advertising, bug fixes, new features, and optimizations.
Currently, the one measure we are using is feedback from users and counselors. We then use the feedback to improve the platform. In terms of SDGs, we are addressing the third SDG by providing solutions to mental health and wellness.
The following are the things that may hinder us from achieving our goals by next year:
- We lack adequate resources such as laptops/computers for coding, designing, and communication. Access to the internet is also quite difficult.
- We don't have enough funds to purchase a domain name for the website and an apple developer account in order to create the iOS app and push it to the app store.
- Traffic is expected to skyrocket if more users get signed up, therefore our hosting providers and other services we use may need funds.
We are a team of four students:
- Joseph Gift - Loves tech and programming. He is an innovative problem solver and is ever on the lookout for something new to solve with his tech skills. He is also good at pushing the team to work hard.
- Maryann Mwita - Has a keen eye for perfection and having things in the right place. She is into the sciences and is a critical thinker. She considers all possibilities and looks into the future ahead.
- Elizabeth Munanye - Really into tech and coding. Though relatively new to coding, she is curious to learn more. She's also a great team player.
- Meshack Mutinda - Into programming and design. Meshack enjoys new challenges in order to push himself to even greater heights. He is knowledgeable about a ton of tech and enjoys using his skills to help out.
We haven't officially partnered with any organizations yet.
