Memory Patches
Mini patches that store medical records
With the intention of avoiding human error, the mini patches provide the necessary clinical information on patients such as allergies, pre-existing medical conditions, surgeries, etc.
It consists of a small patch located in a strategic region (subdermal or not) which can be analyzed with specific devices to read the information it contains, this would need to have nanotechnology storage, with resistance to variable conditions.
Half of the world's population does not have access to quality or permanent health care, either because of extreme poverty or violence, so organizations such as the Red Cross intervene, but it is an interrupted health service.
There is a permanent risk of inappropriate treatment due to lack of knowledge of the patient's current conditions.
According to the WHO, more than 138 million people are harmed each year by medical errors and 2.6 million die.
One of its fields of use are patients who do not have permanent access to hospitals (facilitating the understanding and diagnosis of the patient) or even those who arrive unconscious.
People who arrive unconscious at hospitals are unable to provide information to the doctors treating them, so mistakes are often made, such as administering the wrong drugs, which can lead to death.
Elderly people with degenerative mental illnesses also fall within the scope of application, as it is a much simplified form of recognition in the event of an emergency.
Victims of violence, refugees or migrants who need medical attention.
I have assisted volunteers who have made me aware of the situation and reality of many people who do not have access to the health system, the large number of complex situations that still exist, and as the quality of life of people is completely affected, and even as it affects their lives completely, access to a health system is a first level need, it is essential to be able to develop in the other fields of life.
- Improving healthcare access and health outcomes; and reducing and ultimately eliminating health disparities (Health)
- Concept: An idea being explored for its feasibility to build a product, service, or business model based on that idea
Memory Patches are the approach of a future project, which at this moment still requires research and implementation of new technologies, to be materialized.
- A new use of an existing technology (e.g. application to a new problem or in a new location)
The mini patches include recognition and storage technology, as they function as storage chips that are read by devices with a camera scanning system.
- Big Data
- Imaging and Sensor Technology
Approximately 10,000,000 people can be impacted.
- Product partnership with Doctors Without Borders (MSF) organization
- Reducing the number of deaths due to medical errors.
- Increased efficiency of diagnosis and treatment of patients in such a way that more patients can be attended.
The action plan consists of developing the technology and approving it as soon as possible in such a way that a partnership can be established with the MSF organization to start with the implementation of the patch in patients in such a way that they are evidenced at the end of the year the results especially focused on the poorest countries.
The progress of the project is planned to measure the quantity of devices that are implemented
The biggest barriers that could arise would be in the technical field, since it's necessary to develop a high-quality but low-cost product, considering the community to which it is directed
I grew up in a community whose surroundings did not have access to health care, where the health system collapses many times and where being able to access a diagnostic process takes a long time and also acquiring health services on your own is too expensive, because of this and because of the many volunteers I was able to do, I could perceive many realities that seemed unreal, with what the health system was referring to, it was possible to show human errors that cost patients, regardless of their social strata, I met some people who had something like a confusion in the X-rays, a bad diagnosis, etc, so I decided to design this project that allows us to archive and maintain a clinical history that tells the patient’s trajectory in order to maintain a logic, to be able to know their predispositions, past exams, allergies, surgeries, among other extremely important data both in consultations and in the most critical moments that are emergencies.
- Yes
Along with mentoring from MIT, it would be possible to begin the realization of the project, starting with the analysis and study of more efficient materials and technologies to be able to project and compare the different proposals of prototypes that result from the study of materials to find the most efficient, and use the prize to materialize the theory of the product, thus creating a prototype that meets the needs and can be presented to the different organizations dedicated to the service as MSF.
