Project Soteria
Fully-managed wearable IoT cloud service that collects and analyses data and detects hazards to women and children's safety while leveraging AI.
Got lost in the woods or see a stranger following you , rather than dialing the whole number from the phone here soteria provides a quick solution which is one click away. With the help of AI, IoT and natural language processing it quickly maps the person to their emergency contacts and immediate first-responders to more successfully deploy rescue operations.
It can detect and track environmental conditions, biometric conditions of a person, and many other potential hazards along with proximity to certain areas and allow sharing of real-time location with emergency contacts.
India ranks 148 out of 170 countries in the 'Women, Peace And Security Index 2021'. According to the annual National Crime Record Bureau’s (NCRB) “Crime in India” 2019 report, a total of 73,138 children were reported missing last year. The numbers speak for themselves. The risk of getting out of their place late in the night is considerably high in many states of the country.
The major issue being the technology not accessible to everyone or maybe not enough network coverage through out the country , their cry for help is left unheard by the rescue department.
Soteria is an application integrated with IoT sensors that supports the women and children during the complete workflow of handling an emergency around their safety. Incoming emergency calls are automatically transcribed by Soteria and then it captures essential information in real time as the dispatcher is talking to the caller, which the dispatcher may quickly alter or enhance like:
-What is the nature of the emergency?
- So, what happened?
- How many people's lives are in jeopardy?
For better rescue team routing, Soteria translates the acquired emergency address information to precise latitude/longitude coordinates. Based on the retrieved data, Soteria prioritizes the emergency over all other emergencies. The dispatcher can, of course, adjust this prioritization.
Soteria compares the call to current emergencies to assist the dispatcher in determining whether the call is about a new occurrence or an old emergency and displays the emergency on a map in the context of previous occurrences, allowing the dispatcher to check for rescue teams already on the scene and identify emerging hotspots.
All incidents and call transcripts are stored in a database by Soteria, allowing for complete visibility and traceability of occurrences during and after a crisis.
We alongside IEEESBM WIE AG came up with this project to work on something different and provide the solution for all female candidates of Manipal institute of technology to feel safe when they are travelling solo in the night . There was a verbal survey conducted with the majority female members of IEEESBM WIE AG who also gave their various inputs regarding how would they prefer this device and what features would be beneficial for those. With multiple such meetings with the current and ex members of IEEESBM we came up with this project plan
- Other: Addressing an unmet social, environmental, or economic need not covered in the four dimensions above
Concern regarding safety and security of women and children.
- Prototype: A venture or organization building and testing its product, service, or business model
We have the basic structure of the product ready and also have the understanding about the various soft-wares that will be integrated with the system . We have put together all the components that will be needed for building and testing of the prototype. Generated certain codes which will later be implemented during the prototype testing.
- A new use of an existing technology (e.g. application to a new problem or in a new location)
Overall server-side orchestration: Node.js
The client side: React
Call Transcription: Google Speech / Watson Speech to Text
Emergency Incident Storage: Db2
Information Extraction from Transcripts: Watson NLU and Watson Knowledge Studio
Address to Latitude/Longitude Translation: Mapbox Geocoding
Map Representation: Cognos Dashboard Embedded

Firstly our target audience will be the students around Manipal. With the protype developed we would like to experiment it with the certain people from WIE IEEESBM AG and their members from computer society . Depending on the various feedback received we would then launch the product under MAHE and try to circulate among a rough number of 50 students to create the buzz around about the device . Later from the marketing point of view it would be up for sales where we expect to at least provide this device for 100 more people and certain agencies like rotaract which would increase our reach in the general public. We aim to exponentially grow the market demand for the device and with the upcoming year hope its accessible to the most people in Manipal
Financially we have no funding for the protype development so we will have to use it out of our own pockets. We plan on pitching the project at various platforms aiming to receive certain amount to lift it from the ground and clear the prototype stage as soon as possible.
IEEE SBM, IEEE SBM WIE AG, and IEEE Computer Society. Both of us are the current members of the Manipal student branch and have worked on this project with other members of the team by seeking their various inputs for its development and pitching the idea to IEEE MSS etc.
Also, we have recently got into collaboration with Microsoft as part of their Microsoft For Startups program and we are currently working on migrating our cloud and server workload to Microsoft Azure's infrastructure which will help us scale our platform to meet the decentralization capabilities required for blockchain mainnet and will help us effectively onboard more developers to develop on the top of our platform technology.
Also, we are now a member of the Intel Partner Alliance and Samsung Smart Things Developer.

- Yes
Since the idea completely revolves around women and child safety , we find ourselves well fit to this prize. With the prize received , we plan on developing prototypes such that the project can be lifted from the ground and soon we available for everyone to use. We also intend on making more of the prototypes to come up with the cheapest yet most feasible solution to help the backward community in our country.
