Sustainable Footprints

To overcome the environmental crisis, environmental awareness in society is required. Environmental education is important, all society needs it to establish the necessary corrective measures to reorient development models. 

My proposal is to develop this environmental awareness on youth and adults between 15 to 60 years old, creating a podcast of short audios of maximum 20 minutes per chapter, understanding that presently society lives in an accelerated way where the attention is usually limited. The content of the podcast will be based on relevant facts about climate change, marine litter and other environmental crises, as well as everyday situations that will invite reflection and reconstruction of ideas and beliefs of environmental care, through the telling of short stories. With each audio, it’s intended to develop the capacity of each person to make informed decisions in favour of the planet, wherefrom the knowledge of the current environmental and social problems linked to the situations of daily life, they’ll judge for themselves and become aware of their own actions. The podcast will be streamed on Spotify.

The main problem of the environmental crisis is the lack of in the population or the dissemination of false information.

Environmental education is currently essential to overcome the environmental crisis. In recent years, developing environmental awareness is focused only on children, leaving them the task of teaching adults and youth about environmental care. However, this approach hasn’t worked in the short and medium-term. Since it’s adults who can establish the necessary corrective measures to reorient development models. Children and future generations will be able to do little or nothing if action isn’t taken now.

In Mexico, according to INEGI, for 2020, 72% of the population over 6 years of age has access to the internet, an increase of almost 2% over the previous year. In recent months, the pandemic has accelerated digitization and the connection of society through technology. The economist (newspaper) confirms that the Mexican population access to the internet has become an everyday thing and accompanies them in most of their activities, either directly or indirectly. Whereat least 80% of the users relate their use of the internet to their education and to search information. 

Jacques Delors affirms that “Education throughout life represents for the human being a continuous construction of knowledge and aptitudes, and of the faculty of judgment and action”. So, under the thought that adults are clear about what they want to learn what helps them to improve their quality of life, environmental education for young people and adults can become an element that enables the social organization and social development.

The Mexican society will become aware of their own actions and they could make better decisions about environmental care.
