Access to maternal health information and safe delivery
The project tend to provide automatic sms reminders to expectant mothers on their antenatal appointments as well as providing short text health tips via mobile phone and emails
Our solution tends to develop a web based and mobile application that tracks first date of antenatal visit and subsequently give updates on the next date of appointment with the maternity home. The system will also provide related health tips to the expectant mothers through SMS that will be generated automatically basing on the stage of pregnancy. The system will also provide timely and detailed reporting capability that can assist health facilities in making informed decisions.
The system will be developed in html, PHP, JavaScript and React for the mobile capability. We will rely on the local SMS gateways for automated text delivery to the clients (expectant mothers).
The system will be deployed preferably in AWS or Digital Ocean to minimize cost of equipment and it's maintenance. The internet connectivity will be based on local mobile telecommunication service since the coverage is wide in the region.
Health information to expectant mothers have always been made available at health facilities. Expectant mothers through different mediums have been encouraged to adhere to the appointment dates stipulated for follow ups. In most cases using cards. In spite of all these health information and antenatal visits, maternal deaths and infant mortality still remains at large in my region due to failure to adhere to guidelines and regular access to the required information.
Basing on that, we intend to develop a solution that can minimize that problem through keeping the health facilities and expectant mothers on the same page and in constant communication.
The target population are the Midwives, Gynecologists' and expectant mothers. This are people who generally constitute the maternity and antenatal department within a health facility.
Our solution will serve selected Health facilities and maternity homes in the Northern Part of Uganda. Our solution will help in bridging the information gap between the health facilities and the patients through automated appointments dates and well defined messages to the patients.
Through consultation with friends and families who work directly at the hospitals, we have decided to come out with this solution. However, our team will need to do more study at some selected health facility to ascertain to flow of information before coming out with the first prototype.
- Improving healthcare access and health outcomes; and reducing and ultimately eliminating health disparities (Health)
- Concept: An idea being explored for its feasibility to build a product, service, or business model based on that idea
The solution is still at Concept stage. Our team is doing more feasibility study in order to come up with a well defined, easy to use, reliable and accurate solution that can be generic to health facilities.
- A new use of an existing technology (e.g. application to a new problem or in a new location)
Our solution will rely on Amazon Web Services or Digital Ocean for Hosting. We plan to work with Airtel and MTN Uganda as our SMS gateway.
- GIS and Geospatial Technology
- Software and Mobile Applications
- Uganda
Our Solution expect to serve approximately 6000 people in the first year after launch.
- Increase access to maternal health information.
- Improve of follow ups and antenatal visits appointments.
- Use effective method to reach out to pregnant women.
- Bridge information gap between patients and medical personnel.
- Number of health facilities that will adopt the solution
- Number of patients (expectant women) that will be served through the system.
- Reduction in the number of missed appointment
- Decrease in use of paper based materials
- Decrease in number of maternal death and infant mortality due to undetected complications as a result of missed antenatal visits
- The main limitation is financial capacity. This is because the development and deployment will require vast amount of money. This include setup and trainings.
- Technical capabilities of the health workers will also be an issue.
- Access to reliable internet connection and good GSM network especially in rural arrears will also pose a problem in rollout.
Our team constitute of most persons with background in Information Technology and Computer Science. We also have people with Business skills. Our consulting partner has better composition with people who have been in tech industry for long.

We tend to expand our solution beyond gadget. Our solution will go as far as community outreaches which will involve reaching out to girls in schools and different communities.
We'll also involve them in coming out with possible digital solutions that impacts them directly in their various communities. This will be through working with schools and community leaders to setup Labs that can serve this purpose. Our team will assist in mentorship and polishing the preferred solutions that can scaled up for replication in other arears.
