Recycling of waste plastics into high quality products
Over the years Sierra Leone has seen an increase in indiscriminate disposal of waste especially
plastic, the challenge has been on how to manage stubborn types of waste such as plastic which
will take over 600 years to decompose. According to the Kenema city council, Kenema accumulates an average of 800 tons of waste on a daily basis, only about 32% of this waste is
collected and dumped at dumpsite while the difference of thousands of tons is left in the environment It will address the indiscriminate disposal of solid waste in most high-density
areas
Weyone Recycling offers a solution to the problem of solid waste by manufacturing high
value products from recyclable materials, this innovation will also reduce the amounts of
waste that end up at the local dumpsites / landfills
Weyone Recycling will make money by producing high value products from waste
recyclable and reusable materials, producing alternatives to wood and cement while
preserving trees and nature. We will also address the shortage in housing units by
providing higher affordable housing units using this innovation.
Mission
Creating sustainable jobs for the poor that give waste a clean and greener life, jobs that
preserve the environment
It is a common sight to see our streets, drainages, roadsides and even dumpsites packed
with a lot of waste. Sadly, recyclable waste forms the bulk of identifiable items in
drainages, dumpsites and in communities, the resultant effect during the rainy season are
floods, damage to property, breeding ground for harmful organisms and sometimes even
death.
Indiscriminate waste disposal poses high social, environmental and economic hazards to
communities. Today recyclable waste has become the fastest growing packaging option
in the beverage and food industry. According to the Kenema City Council, the city of
Kenema generates more than 1200 metric tonnes of waste on a daily basis of which the
local council is currently collecting only about 30% while the difference remains in our
communities.
This concept was birthed from the desire to find a lasting solution to the problem of solid waste
in our great republic, especially the problem of plastic waste which takes more than 500 years
to decompose. Over the years we have seen indiscriminate disposal of waste across the country
because most resident do not have resources to pay for waste collection services.
Due to these problems residents end up disposing off their waste in undesignated areas like
drainages, sewer networks and around the communities.
Over the recent past number of drainages in kenema have been blocked by solid waste which
has led to the free flow of sewer waste, this is a huge health and hygiene problem especially in
high density areas. These blockages often lead to outbreaks of water related illnesses like
typhoid and cholera
Our Innovation has six (6) main goals
• It will address the indiscriminate disposal of solid waste in most high-density
areas
• We will mitigate the cutting down of trees for purpose of charcoal as this led to
deforestation and subsequently climate change by producing briquette/charcoal
out of bio degradable waste.
• Provides small holder farmers with innovative products that are environmentally
friendly and enable farmers save time
• Provide a cheaper, sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to timber
and other construction materials such as tiles, pavers, poles, interlocking bricks,
furniture etc this addresses problems of deforestation and reduce effects of
climate change
• Will create employment and a source of living for the marginalised youth groups
in our communities
• Able to use this technology to put up affordable and durable livestock sheds and
housing etc
Our main segment are farmers who require a fencing solution that is durable and has no salvage
value as these has been the main challenges when it comes to products currently on the market
today
Others include medium sized contractors; this is because this segment frequently requires our
products in their line of work. Medium sized contractors are continually looking for cheaper
sources of raw materials in order to increase their profit margin and to be able to have
competitive advantage over their other medium sized and large contractors
The reason why we feel this will be an ideal segment is because they usually need construction
materials very often in order to satisfy their client’s demand.
Medium sized contractors Customer Profile
21 | P a g e
• The medium sized contractors usually have tenders to carry out construction works
from various sections of society including individuals, businesses, the local authority
and the government
• The medium sized contractors will be easier to approach and convince the decision
makers to try out our products while highlighting the many benefits attached to our
eco-products.
• The medium sized contractors are continually looking for a cheaper source of
construction materials in order to increase their profit and reduce their overall costing
in order to attract more clients.
• The medium sized contractors are continually trying to develop strategies on how they
can compete with larger construction companies in order to be able to grow (increase)
their capacity so that they are able to bid for the bigger contracts
• The medium sized contractors are interested in building a good reputation on their
quality of service and work culture so that they can be referred to other clients.
• It will be easier to explain to medium sized contractors the importance of using eco
construction materials and how they will benefit the environment. That way the
contactors will also know and may use the environmental approach as a tool to win
some businesses
The motivation that the identified segment will have to buy our products is mostly because their
main interest is to reduce costs. This reduction in material cost can be enjoyed by the
constructor alone or may give the contractor an option to reduce their costs hence the benefits
being enjoyed by the end user who is the owner of the property being constructed.
The overall reduction in the pricing of construction prices will translate to an increased number
of people having the capacity to afford and venture into construction activities hence the
contractors having more clients.
- Taking action to combat climate change and its impacts (Sustainability)
- Prototype: A venture or organization building and testing its product, service, or business model
The project solves the indiscriminate disposal of waste in our communities and eliminates all
problems and sicknesses attached to waste, this is an opportunity because this is what the
government, donor community and the councils are interested in seeing in the different
communities of Sierra Leone.
The melting of the waste plastic does not produce any fumes or emissions, because the
equipment is specified to only reach the melding point and not the burning point where the
fumes well be produced.
The current political party in government has seen the challenge in the high rate of unemployment and access to decent shelter. This is a huge opportunity because our project will
be able to create over 300 jobs per plant which can be part of the solution to the challenge of unemployment in Sierra Leone. The building section will be able to employ over 200 youth who will be trained and accredited to manage our products.
The government though the council is looking for a lasting solution to the problem of solid
waste, this is another opportunity for this project to be supported.

INNOVATION: Recycling of waste plastics into high quality, durable, attractive,
inexpensive construction materials

accumulates an average of 800 tons of waste on a daily basis, only about 32% of this waste is
collected and dumped at dumpsite while the difference of thousands of tons is left in the
environment causing floods, blocking drains, plastic also once it starts breaking down leaches
into the ground water thereby contaminating it.
The rural community isn’t spared from this challenge as plastic chemical containers mostly
from farmer support programs end up in the environment while others have lost animals
because they swallowed a plastic. The negative impacts of plastic are many and these prompted
us to commence research on this innovation.
Our technology uses plastic to produce wood and cement alternatives by leveraging on the
characteristics of this material.

The Business environment for waste recycling is ripe for exploration, this is because all
segments of society are trying to put things in place to curb the problem of solid waste and
ensure that decent shelter is created for the citizenry at a cheaper price.
