Infectious Food Scraps Decomposition to Irrigation Water
Disintegration of SARS COV-2 and other infectious food scraps into irrigation water within One (1) hour at an affordable cost for Global application to protect human health and environment
We developed an organic food waste digestor compound. Scraps are emptied into a vessel with a rotating arm that blends the scraps with the compound creating its own heat at 37C. The compound breaks down the and totally disintegrate the organics into irrigation water within One (1) hour.
The water can be piped into a sewer or used for irrigation water and soil enrichment.
Problem : Transmission of food pathogens to affect food and human health
Scale of problem and potential outbreaks :
Transmission of SARS COV-2 and other diseases from infectious waste from airlines, cruise ships, ferries and yachts classified as International Catering Waste (ICW). This is considered hazardous and is controlled by the Regulation (EC) 1069/2009. These rules are in place to prevent the spread of disease like foot and mouth and now harboring SARS COV-2 pathogens and can transmit diseases from continents to continents with movements of airlines food scraps
Factors to problem :
Most lesser developed small islands which depend on tourism lack proper port health treatment facilities and most waste are sent to landfill or dumps which transmitting disease to flora and fauna with now emergence of new virus topotypes
Consequences :
The spread of foot and mouth disease and the residue of body fluids left on food scraps will harbor bacterial and pathogens a treat to human health, food security. The unplanned environmental disposal of healthcare wastes may also represent a risk for biodiversity
Statistics :
FAO reported "Foot and mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious viral disease of livestock....." There is some evidence that the SARS COV-2 virus may lead to intestinal infection and be present in fasces.
Post SARS COV-2 Global travel will spike and mass introduction of a new microorganism into a new geographic area in lesser developed Islands. A novel pathogen entering a population with no previous experience of this microbe causes the most severe disease.
Target Population
All Small Island Developing States and lesser developed countries with open dumping or inadequate waste management facilities where waste pickers salvage scrap food and consume on a daily basis.
These waste pickers are mostly not seen by the public and our survey shows some are mentally challenged with some level of autism. In some cases contaminated food are returned to the adjoining communities with inadequate housing and poverty a catalyst for keeping the cycle of poverty .
These forgotten people are humans and we must do all to reduce their hardship and pain and suffering. Our survey included witnessing landfill pickers lifestyle over past 3 years in Trinidad and Tobago and its a way of life.
Potential Users
We have engaged One (1) Airports in Trinidad and Tobago with a prototype that can be commercialized at an affordable cost.
The current approved method of disposal by incineration, deep burial, steam autoclave is costly and a barrier to safe treatment and disposal in most lesser developed Countries.
We have sought legal counsel JD Sellier Co to advise us on submission of the extract towards patent before commercialization. In the interim we are using a diluted version of the rapid digestor which takes 18-24 hours instead of 1 hour.
The rapid decomposition allows a smaller footprint machine, less energy lowering carbon footprint and the preferred choice instead of incineration.
- Other: Addressing an unmet social, environmental, or economic need not covered in the four dimensions above
Our solution will address the introduction of new viral strains to lesser developed countries with inadequate waste management training and facilities.
- Pilot: An organization deploying a tested product, service, or business model in at least one community
We selected Piarco International Airport in Trinidad, Crown Point International Airport and Grantley Adams International Airport Barbados to contain the spread of infectious disease during the pandemic. Post COVID-19 Global travel is expected to boom and so will the transmission of disease.
Accomplished to date :
The decomposing compound was encapsulated to last for at least One(1) year and can be topped up to the operating product. Meat and fish bones disintegrates under Two (2) hours
Due care to keep the decomposing compound untraceable which is infused within chipped coconut shell and does not degrade when mixed with food scraps. Its organic by nature and works similar to the gut digestion of cattle.
