Food for everyone
Collect from different agricultural fields products, that will be discarded because they do not pass high quality standards and give them back to organizations that need it.
Basically my solution is based on the collection of organic products (vegetables and fruits) that are going to be discarded for not passing high standards of quality and aesthetics established by large industries mainly supermarkets. Subsequently develop a website where they can register here and that these products can be redistributed to different schools and organizations in need.
The big problem to which I am trying to give a solution is the great waste of food that ends up in landfills generating more and more methane gas, as it is also important that these saved products can be redistributed to people of lower socioeconomic levels in need.
The people that my solution is mainly aimed at are the people and children of lower socioeconomic levels since these are the people who are most affected either by bad nutrition that are produced by the high prices of vegetables and fruits, compared to junk food, in addition to the bad nutrition provided by the government to public schools, this generating high levels of obesity in Chile since 74% of the adult population is overweight or obese. In addition, according to the Junaeb Nutritional Map 2020. This statistical report, which establishes the nutritional profiles of children and young people in the public education system, managed to evaluate more than 700,000 schoolchildren. In general, the report showed that more than 50% of those evaluated are overweight or obese.
Therefore, my solution would not only be helping the environment by reducing the waste that generates methane gas in landfills, but also the lives of people who need it.
In my school before the pandemic we went to a more vulnerable community to give food to people who needed it for lunch, this was prepared with food purchased with savings that were quite expensive since it was cooked for many people so I think it would be more effective to use this solution that I am proposing. I have also had the opportunity to talk to several people in rural areas. Also, since my project is only in the idea stage, I still need to develop it further.
- Other: Addressing an unmet social, environmental, or economic need not covered in the four dimensions above
The need that my solution tries to address are mainly two, on the one hand to reduce the emission of methane gas produced by the waste generated by large industries in organic products in good condition that end up in landfills. On the other hand, redistribute these products in good condition and that they are used by people who really need them.
- Concept: An idea being explored for its feasibility to build a product, service, or business model based on that idea
I chose this stage of the project to present my solution because I am still a high school student and I do not have the resources or the support to carry it out.
- A new use of an existing technology (e.g. application to a new problem or in a new location)
Basically the technology that I would like to apply in my solution is the development of a web page and later an application, in which different organizations or schools that need these rescued foods can register.
- Software and Mobile Applications
- Chile
As my solution is still in ideas, there is no exact figure of the number of people benefiting, but if it could be implemented, the ideal would be to start with tests that would first help small organizations 25-35 people, then see if the applied model works properly, and then extend it to a more macro level, which would be ideally about 100 people who would be benefited.
I emphasize that my solution is still in ideas, but I would like indicators that the project is working, mainly in two areas.
The first is the amount of methane gas emitted from landfills in chile and if this has clearly decreased.
The other indicator that I would use would be the levels of obesity, malnutrition
