sMile
sMile, developed to protect bike riders from the impact of unethical driving and make sure they abide by government laws, protecting themselves from the harmful impact it leads on them.
The app has special features like auto SMS and manual call. But in the future, the app will have the potential to automate the calls and use WhatsApp instead of messages and mainly check for alcohol simultaneously with the helmet identification.
Our project provides the solution for some of the major reasons why accidents take place.
1)It will not let the bike start unless the user is wearing a helmet using Image recognition.
2)It can detect whether the user is nearing a hump or a pothole, by notifying the user and showing the distance for the same using ultrasonic distance sensor
3)It can also detect whether he has a minor or major alcohol intake, and if there is a minor intake then the family members are informed, and if a major intake, the bike will not start due to high risk while riding using MQ-03(alcohol sensor) and Fast2SMS
4) The project also detects if the user has a major or minor accident, and informs the family for the same. In case the user has a major accident then the ambulance is called by using impact switches.
In a developing nation like India, with advancements in transportation and technology and a rise in the total number of vehicles, road accidents increase rapidly. This advancement in technology also increased traffic hazards. We have all read articles in the newspaper, about how someone died of not wearing a helmet while riding a bike. Or of how he fell into an unfinished pothole that he didn’t see on the road. Road injuries disproportionately affect the poor. The burden of such injuries, harm, and consequent disability are much greater among pedestrians and those who use pedals and motorcycles. Large sections are at risk for such injury, making it an urgent social issue. Sometimes even the innocent get caught in this because of someone else’s casualty. In Fact in India, (according to the Wikipedia stat) 37% of road accidents involve two-wheelers, a total of 151, 000 deaths out of 480, 000 accidents with an average of around 140 a day and 6 an hour, making Indian roads the deadliest in the world, Bangalore having the second-highest accident rate in the country.
Marketing this project to bike riders, we hope to create a new target audience that prior apps haven't considered. Our main consumers will be bike riders who don't follow rules and regulations and are not sober all the time.
Unlike competitors, sMile allows families of the riders to feel more carefree and secure when their family member is on the road. We are giving families the assurance to safeguard the users on the roads.
We plan to expand it to all bike companies outside Bengaluru in Karnataka. Karnataka has 17million bike riders.
We hope to get at least 40% of the families in each area to purchase our system. For families of bike riders who are concerned with their safety on the road, sMile is an accurate, accessible, and trustworthy project that has the potential to save millions of lives.
Our mobile app will function well and effectively as it is user-friendly, does not require human intervention all the time, is independent, runs in the background, and notifies/gives missed calls to the required person spontaneously. It has all the built-in features which are well coded, checked several times with the hardware. It is easy to navigate through and does not disturb the user at any point during his journey.
On a larger scale, sMile has the potential to save money for our government. Each year, the Indian government spends Rs.5 lakh/person as a result of bike accidents, which is approximately Rs.20,000 crore.
As of now, our product is in its prototype stage, but once we develop it into a full-fledged model, we will test it with potential users and our local community before introducing it to the market.
- Other: Addressing an unmet social, environmental, or economic need not covered in the four dimensions above
sMile is an application that will greatly impact our own society. After conducting brief research, our team discovered our country’s interest in public safety. It has the potential to differentiate itself from all of its competitors. Its biggest advantage over the competitors is its ability to focus on a range of problems that lead to tragic incidents.
Also, unlike the apps “Smart Helmet”, “AlcoTrack”, “RealRider” and “Road Detector” which perform only 1 function without any assurance of safety to the family members or mainly riders, our project sMile is capable of performing all their functions in a single app with just 1 small hardware component.
It is important to note that all the competitors above focus on a broad audience, never specifying the immediate purpose of the app. They designed their app to determine their user-specific aspects. Our app takes this a step further to combine all the aspects with additional benefits with the ability to ensure the safety of the rider.
- Prototype: A venture or organization building and testing its product, service, or business model
Our product is in its prototype stage. We currently have a functional prototype and app and are looking for the prototype to be developed into a market-ready model.
- A new project or business that relies on technology to be successful
The hardware of our project has been developed using the Arduino platform, 1 Arduino mega, and 1 Arduino UNO as the motherboards and various types of sensors.
The helmet module involves an alcohol sensor that detects whether the user has consumed alcohol. If it detects a major alcohol level then a red led glows on the top of the helmet to alert the other vehicle riders. And the bike doesn’t start due to the high level of risk.
The bike module has a Bluetooth module (HM-10), ultrasonic sensor, LCD screen, and accident detection using switches.
The Bluetooth: used to connect the hardware to the app. It helps in communication between the hardware and the app by sending and receiving data for the app to perform its specific function.
The ultrasonic sensor: used to detect humps or potholes, which in some cases, undetected, can be fatal. We first set the road level with respect to the bike. Then if the distance between the bike and the road increases, buzzer 1 sound is played indicating it's a pothole. If the distance decreases, a buzzer 2 sound is played indicating it's a hump.
LCD screen: displays the distance and also whether it's a hump or pothole.
Accident detection: done using switches. there are two levels - minor and major. At present we have used switches placed in the headlights of the bike a few inches away from each other, front and back.

Our solution hasn't been launched yet.
Our projected market size for our first year will be based on the number of bike riders in each area of Bengaluru. There are 60 lakh bike riders in Bengaluru 2019(2nd highest accident rates and bike population in the country) and we plan to approach bike companies and 30 bike riders each month of the year.
During our second year, we plan to expand it to all of the bike companies outside Bengaluru in Karnataka. There are 17.87million bike riders in Karnataka.
We believe that we will be able to get at least 40% of the families in each area to purchase our system. For families of bike riders whose families are concerned with their safety on the road in their absence, sMile is an accurate, accessible, and trustworthy project that has the potential to save millions of lives
Our project will sell for Rs.2500/-, as we feel this is an appropriate amount for the services we provide. Our team is hoping to speak with two companies per month in our first year to introduce the app to Bengaluru. By the end of our second year, we hope to have spread the word to most of the districts in Karnataka, which means approximately 31 districts.
Our impact goals for next year are making sure there are fewer casualties on roads in our community and making sure the people are more conscious while riding their bikes. We hope to instill a sense of responsibility in them and give their family members a sense of assurance that they are safe.
We plan on using KPI (key performance indicator) to measure our progress
Currently, finance will be the biggest challenge for our project. Each model costs 3100 Indian rupees. Bulk production will reduce the cost by 40%, therefore making the selling price 2500/- with a profit of 640 per piece for our company. But the money for our initial production will be difficult because of the uncertain return.
sMile will consist of several teams divided by design, technological, market analysis and sales, and service and product lines. We will collaborate with one another to cover the full picture and find a balance between the various aspects of the app and hardware to make it more engaging and purposeful for our customers.
Design:-
The design team will design the app using wireframe diagrams, keeping in mind both the goals and the purpose of the application. They will also work with the sales and service teams to ensure that the design is pleasing to the public eye.
Technology:-
The technological team will create the app and develop the hardware in a more impressive way. Currently, we have developed our app prototype using Thunkable software, and hardware is coded using Arduino software. We believe there would be a great deal of collaboration between the tech and design teams to work out the details of implementation and decide between the ideal product and what it is possible to accomplish.
Marketing and Sales:-
The market analysis and sales team will evaluate the market size and assess the needs of the public in order to ensure that our app is meeting or surpassing the expectations of its intended users.
The team will create advertisements to help expand our business.
Service and Product:-
The service and product line team will assess our competition, helping the company to decide how to proceed to maximize our potential. They will ensure that our app and hardware remain effective and relevant to the lives of consumers. The service team will work with the sales team to determine future advances that can embellish our product.
All of our teams will work collaboratively to provide both a strong foundation and a bright future for our app.
We haven't teamed up with any organizations as of now.
