Torch
A Financial Gamification Platform to help reduce the Generational Wealth Gap.
Torch uses gamification to teach kids wealth building strategies to reduce generational wealth gap. It teaches concepts like Roth IRA, Building good credit scores, Investing in real estate etc.
We developed the app in Flutter, latest cross platform technology from Google. This allowed us to develop both for Android and iOS using a single codebase.
We are trying to solve the problem of Generational Wealth Gap in Fairfield County, CT USA. While Fairfield County is one of the richest county in the United States, it is also one of the most unequal counties when it comes to income.
82,300 people in Fairfield County live in poverty where top 1% of earners make 62 times as much as the bottom 99%.
Wealthy families are not just passing down their assets but the financial knowledge to develop more wealth. This results in a generational wealth gap and the income inequality will keep growing forever.
We are targeting the low income population in Fairfield County. We found that kids from these families don't have the resources to learn wealth building strategies. The schools never teach these concepts and when they grow in to adults, they never employ the strategies to build wealth.
Torch will use gamification to engage and teach these kids wealth building strategies early in their life so when they grow in to adults, they can use these strategies to build wealth and finally reduce the income inequality.
We have done research by analyzing various reports on wealth gap and the causes of it. We just completed the initial prototype and plan to engage with the potential users using this prototype. We will then use the feedback to refine and enhance our solution.
- Improving financial and economic opportunities for all (Economic Prosperity)
- Prototype: A venture or organization building and testing its product, service, or business model
So far here is what we accomplished
- We did extensive market research on the topic of income inequality and generational wealth gap.
- We developed our initial app using Flutter. It is currently available in Google Play Store and in the review process with Apple Store. We anticipate this to be completed soon.
- Torch Inc. has been incorporated in the state of CT as a non-profit organization.
- A new use of an existing technology (e.g. application to a new problem or in a new location)
We used Flutter, the latest cross platform app development technology from Google to build our app. The use of this technology allowed us to rapidly develop modern looking app using a single code base both for Android and iOS. We were also able to use Firebase for quickly enabling authentication in our app.
- Software and Mobile Applications
- United States
Currently our solution is in prototype stage. It has been downloaded by 4 users in Google Play Store.
We plan to target 100 beta users for testing and getting additional feedback. Once we perfect our app with this feedback, we will then scale up and go live.
Our goal for next year is to refine our prototype using our initial 100 users. During this stage, while the usage is limited, we do anticipate to impact the lives of these 100 users. They will get to use our app and learn financial strategies to build wealth and reduce generational wealth gap.
Here are our metrics
- Number of users for our app. We can get the metrics from the app stores
- We will survey the users to see the impact of our solution. Our goal is to positively impact at least 10% of the users that will be using our app.
Here are some of the barriers we anticipate
- Since both of us are currently attending school, we need to hire programmers to do some of the app development. This does require financial investment.
- We are young and that might be a hurdle for our credibility but we will overcome it.
Technical Solution
Ashton Reddy - Knows Flutter and will use that knowledge to develop the app
Scarlett Reddy - Knows web site development and will use that knowledge to develop the website.
Background
Our parents immigrated to the US and we have seen them use their wealth building strategies. This gives us a good perspective on this topic.
We currently do not partner with any organizations. However after our validating our prototype, we will partner with businesses to provide incentives for kids that earn points learning using our app.
