MOCHCare
There has been shortage of maternal and child health record booklet in Ghana where health administrators use exercise books, cardboards and papers to collect and store data, and some misplace and mishandle the booklet making data loss which lead to maternal and infant mortality. However, tracing defaulters is becoming a burden since the care giver has to to go through a tall list of people to look for defaulters. MOCHCare is digitizing the booklet into a web app for both mobile phone and PC usage.
Features that are being developed like SMS/Voice call alert to curb defaulting problems, data collation feature for easy report writing, red flag alert to make the care giver pay close attention and many more will help eradicate maternal mortality and death in children which may happen due to incomplete immunizations and will change lives if scaled up globally.
Asuogyaman District in the Eastern region of Ghana has 38 health facilities and yet get 75 booklets for a period of three (3) months and this results in attending to pregnant women and children without a proper data collection and storage. This has been a problem in some part of the country and health providers use papers and card boards to collect and store data of pregnant women and children. A child actually died in my presence because her mother misplaced the card board used to store her child's information. This and many more reasons drove my passion to digitize the booklet.
MOCHCare is a web app with both online and offline features that cant be used in both the rural and urban area in any part of the world. Data is collected and stored into the system and makes it centralized which can be assessed any where in the country. Data is also collated to make reporting easy with SMS/Voice call alert to remind clients of next day of visit. The application can be used on both phones and on PC with secured database .
Our target population and lives that we are working to improve are all pregnant women and children under five (5) years.
Pregnant women are underserved in Ghana for not providing for materials used in taking their records and that of their new born babies.
MOCHCare is creating a web app to help keep proper records of pregnant women and children. Prototype testing was done with both hospitals and pregnant women too. The web application will address their needs in the sense that, they don't have to go for antenatal clinic with the bulky booklet again, miss antenatal care again (the SMS/Voice call will alert them), will not worry about mishandled and misplaced booklet and easy report writing as well.
- Unlock collaboration among patients, scientists, and health care providers to improve patient outcomes
Maternal Mortality is at the verge in Ghana and Africa at large and the causes are traced towards the Maternal and Child health booklet (one of every seventeen children die before age five in Ghana; source (UNICEF), and MOCHCare wants to be part of the solution by digitizing the booklet and creating features that will make the health provider aware of all pregnancy induced complications and give the appropriate care to the expectant mother and child which will eradicate maternal mortality in our land.
- Prototype: A venture or organization building and testing its product, service, or business model.
Prototype because, after empathy mapping, we developed the design thinking toolkits and later designed the UI/UX. Currently the frontend is being developed. The design thinking toolkits and the UI/UX design was tested with the Asuogyaman District health directorate.
- A new technology
The current solution being used to solve the problem our web app is also addressing is not technology based, doesn't have features to make maternal care good but our app is tech based with good features that can improve maternal health care in Ghana and Africa as whole however, our solution is technology based with appealing features to improve on the maternal health in Ghana and Africa at large.
The core technology that powers our solution is a software. The digitized version of the maternal and child health record booklet. However, it's a new technological application that is being built from the scratch.
Prototype was only tested.
