I would use the funding as follows:
1) To revise and improve the coding of our beta;
2) Start paying our dedicated programmers who've been working without pay, as well as hire a Project Manager, Product Director, Videographe/archivist to gather and editing Video testimonials (from resisters; to increase significantly the pay of our terribly low paid Outreach/Research Co-directors. I myself can live happily on $15k/yr;
3) Cover the costs of running three-month (approx.) beta tests for at least two nonviolent-resistance strategy-based campaigns, one climate justice (stopping a pipeline) and one for a social or democracy justice cause: e.g. programming and design changes likely needed due to bugs or the need to pivot to achieve Proof of Concept; funding to the campaigns themselves to hire an additional volunteer coordinate of their choice, whom we would train to be able to properly sort,manage, organize, all the volunteers GetCourage would be sending them;
4) After achieving POC, covering the costs for
a) recoding to integrate sufficient privacy and security protections and be able to scale to hundreds of campaigns in various countries;
b) marketing and social media necessary to get the word out regarding this biggest advance in nonviolent resistance mobilizing since Gandhi and King.
Rather than our story, here is where we are coming from, the basis for our team's shared devotion and vision: 1) the most urgent and gravest threats we face-- catastrophic rates of climate change and species extinction, the strong possibility of fascist overthrows of democracies including American democracy, and grotesque wealth inequality--all require system change: Winning elections and changing our individual life styles are essential but entirely insufficient to achieve real systemic power structure changes; 2) for the past 140 years, the most effective and essential strategy to achieve the most positive systemic changes in Western Civilization has been the strategy of mass non-violent civil resistance, the strategy proven to be twice as effective as violent revolution; and 3) that massive nonviolent civil resistance strategies only require 3.0 -3.5% of the general population to have significant moral courage to have a 70-80% chance of success.
Therefore, our tiny gender-balanced international ethnically diverse non-profit highly devoted (mostly unpaid) team's goal as explained in more detail below, is to scale moral courage--to use technology to enable nonviolent civil resistance-based campaigns to embolden, recruit and commit the numbers they need to win. Organizing after all, is a numbers game!
The "mother of all mobilizing challenges," the problem GetCourageNow aims to solve is, "How can we catalyze, nurture, maintain, and spread moral courage at scale?" How can we therefore use technology to bring out the hero in at least the 3-3.5% of our general population that research on systemic change has proven is the percentage necessary to have a 70-80% chance to succeed. How can we go beyond the necessary but totally insufficient strategy of elections, sustainability solutions, etc, to enable millions to become truly courageous activists, willing to strike, to lay down in wave after wave until fossil fuel pipeline construction finally stops; to sit-in on city council meetings until they eliminate police qualified-immunity; to shut down the nation if necessary to make the wealthy pay their fair-share; etc. How can we use tech to discover and design those behavioral levers that will bring out the hero in enough of us to win the most important battles of our specie's history, and democracy's history?
Our solution: A free courage-catalyzing/risk-minimizing ladder of engagement that can be easily integrated into the "Take Action" tab of any social, climate, or economic-justice campaign's website,FacebookPage, etc. Think: "Kickstarter and much more meets movement organizing."
1) Despite the fact that nonviolent civil resistance has been the essential component of virtually all the greatest human, labor, economic, civil rights, and anti-war achievements for more than 140 years, we are, to our knowledge the only team on the planet devoted (for years now) to discovering and developing the first technology capable of catalyzing, growing, and maintaining at scale the intense moral courage necessary for non-violent civil strategies to recruit and commit the numbers they need to have a fighting chance to succeed.
2) We are the only team that has recruited about ten nonviolent civil resistance based campaigns in both the social as well as climate justice spaces wanting to test our beta when it is ready
3) Our work is by definition about the most disruptive approach you can imagine, since, taken to its conclusion, it would be capable of shutting down an entire nation's economy, or conversely, if there were to be a fascist take-over, our tech would be essential for mounting a large enough nonviolent counter-resistance to overthrow the fascists and get back our democracy.
If we succeed, this game changer courage-unleashing tool will arguably the most urgently needed and important tool of 2021 and beyond
So far we've probably gotten several major thought leaders, some top engineers, many potential donors, foundations, and electoral-strategy organizers to start thinking much more seriously about the urgent need to take the work of Gandhi King, Sharpe et al a giant leap forward. Here are the steps we're taking to achieve our planned Impact:
Step 1: Mid 2017-mid 2018: a year of both problem and solution interviewing with more than 120 individual, based on the Running Lean bible of doing lean startups
Step 2: 2018: Getting constructive criticism from more than two dozen top organizers in social, economic and climate-justice organizing; revising our user stories and user-interface design accordingly,
Step 3: 2018: Team recruitment, Fundraising, Production and testing of an Alpha
Step 4: 2019-to end of 2020: Team recruitment, Fundraising and late 2019, Beginning Production of a beta
Step 5: Spring 2021: completion of beta
Step 6: Summer- fall of 2021: beta testing, debugging, iterating and if necessary pivoting, while continuing to fundraise until we achieve Proof of Concept
Step 7: Big Bucks-raising to recode to make scalable for 100s of campaigns, to cover marketing,media costs to spread the word of our success
