TMH MANCAVE
- United States
TMH MANCAVE will be able to increase the mentorship to the younger generation of African American boys and decrease the stigma of generational trauma and break the cycle of violence. Supporting youth in emotionally wellness, anger management and being accountable. Our young boys must learn from the men in the community how to develop positive coping skills. Youth in many of the communities are generationally doing what they have seen in their own community environments. The new funding will allow TMHMC to double the number of event series in the neighborhoods addressing topics that help in healing trauma. Also, the online wellness services will specifically focus more on male adults and youth one on one as well as group remote peace circles and small in-person group sessions.
TMH MANCAVE (TMHMC)is a not for profit organization created to bring awareness and eliminate the stigma associated with the mental health needs black men require. The short term outcomes of our MANCAVE programing is that black men will be able to release their anger, stress, anxiety and depression in a safe environment, and they are provided with cultural supportive coping skills that will help them in their own healing. Also, men will recognize mental illness as an "illness," as we would cancer, diabetes, or high blood pressure, and will be more accountable to themselves and others with more compassion to those who suffer from traumatic experiences.
Our long term outcomes are that African American men will improve their attitude and will change the narrative from a conversation about mental illness to a conversation about mental wellness that will show what a healthy community looks like despite prisms of stigma and historical adversity. Mental wellness will allow another generation to grow up with access to counseling and mental health improvement resources that can help them live a happy, healthy life.
TMHMC addresses the issues of stigma around African American men getting support for their mental and emotional illnesses. Through its monthly small group in person & remote services, brotherhood, healing, self-empowerment and wellness education, TMHMC provides a safe space that centers the healing of black men while empowering them to be leaders in fostering generational healing in the African American community.
According to research studies, this past year alone, there have been over 6.8 million African Americans who have had a diagnosable mental illness. Also, research suggest that instead of seeking professional help for conditions such as PTSD, depression or anxiety, many men in the community resort to self-medication or isolation in an attempt to solve their problems on their own. This issue of masking pain is especially prevalent amongst African American men. TMHMC s a safe haven where young men to elders are able to heal from trauma and receive culturally sensitive resources.
Our unique focus is that we are 100% focused on African American men who normally would not come to an organization to talk about and share their emotional & mental health concerns. TMHMC creates a sense of community and trust through its event series and online wellness program. The men share knowledge across generations by providing examples, coping tools and techniques for life skills. TMHMC provides opportunities to learn social and emotional skills (Leadership development, peace circles, volunteering that promotes positive communication), Improve self-esteem and youth empowerment (Leadership opportunities, employment and skill building), Build relationships between youth and adults through the event series that creates a safe haven or space for participants. Lastly. TMHMC minimizes trauma by connecting community members with caregivers and support services (workshops, block parties with service providers).
TMHMC's overall goal is to provide a safe space for men to dialogue and begin or continue to heal from their anger, pain, sadness, anxiety, depression, stress or hurt. This trauma may come from adverse childhood experiences, environment or difficult dysfunctional relationships. At TMHMC Men are embraced with compassion and given tools and positive coping skills to help them manage and balance their emotions. Through both personal and professional encounters, TMHMC has witnessed firsthand the need for safe spaces for men of color to discuss mental and emotional issues throughout their struggles with connecting to others. With that said, TMHMC is committed to servicing African-American men because they believe that the emotional needs of black men are often disregarded, and the healing of African American communities can start with the adult family members who often serve as the leaders in the households and communities overall. TMHMC proposes to continue helping to remove the negative stigma surrounding mental health in the African American community and train men in restorative practices to teach them how to de-escalate conflict within themselves, in their own families and in their neighborhoods. This is a start to healing and sustaining the African American family.
