B. MOORE DANCE
- United States
Although tremendous strides have been made to present choreography of women from diverse backgrounds, there is still a disparity gap in presenting and funding resources for women artists. I would like to expand on creative initiatives and future projects, which require financial support and resources to bring into fruition.
These initiatives and projects include the following:
"Women Doing The Work," designed to create opportunities, resources, and dialogue concerning the advancement of work by women of color, responding to some of the disparities that women dance artists, including black artists endure in funding and presenting that disproportionately favors men.
“We Rise,” a creative development project, working in collaboration with the Gendercide Awareness Project to bring awareness to the 100 million girls and women missing worldwide. 117 MILLION women and girls are not accounted for, which is 3.4% of the global female population, according to reports by the United Nations Population Fund.
"The Neglected Heart of Soul: An Ode to Donny Hathaway,” a choreographic project honoring the life, music and legacy of the great soul singer, Donny Hathaway who tragically lost his life due to suicide.
"Global Connexion: A Virtual Dance Exchange,” an initiative connecting artists globally through dialogue and dance.
I learned my first steps in dance from the janitor at my elementary school after sharing that I wanted to take classes in dance, but my mom couldn't afford it. Having been a former dancer, she was granted permission by the school principal to teach me dance lessons.
Now, for 25 + years, I have established myself as a dancer, choreographer, educator, director and entrepreneur. I also spent three years in South Korea as a Visiting Professor of Dance at Sungkyunkwan University. As the Founder and Artistic-Executive Director of B. MOORE DANCE, my mission is to empower and transcend generations through the art of dance by cultivating the arts through leadership, education and performances. The organizational goals are to develop the artistic profile, expand worldwide visibility and exposure through national and international touring, create new collaborative and community engagement projects, with groundbreaking performances. My aim is to advance dance and foster a deeper appreciation and understanding of the arts and provide a nurturing environment for future artists and leaders. I want to become the leading premier arts organizations in the world through the collective sharing of ideas and provide the necessary tools for artists to be successful in all settings.
Women and their contributions to the cultural heritage of American society are essential to the core values of the arts in a struggling democracy. B. MOORE DANCE is a contemporary modern dance company with a diverse collective of performing artists. We produce performances and create community engagement initiatives that provide experiences rooted in African American and global aesthetics. Our work is rigorous and technically challenging, employing through research and development, period-specific integration of historical and cultural perspectives.
The projects we create and design give voice to multicultural communities that are often unheard, and ensure that these traditions are properly placed within the dance continuum. We engage the humanity in all audiences, inform and increase critical thinking in a society enriched by multicultural, connectivity. We do this by reflecting on the past and present, which is invaluable to the future ecological systems of dance.
Our initiative, Global Connexion: A Virtual Dance Exchange, is unique in its purpose to connect local and international artists in a collaborative setting, gathering experiences from various background through dialogue, film and a series of master dance classes. We engaged artists from around the world in the sharing of a global experience to enlighten and educate communities.
My work is innovative in practice as I tackle social themes that challenge perspectives as a dance maker, creative director and entrepreneur in the arts.
Since 1996, I have consistently created and contributed new choreography to the field of dance, receiving national and international recognition from peers and critics. My work focuses on a wide range of cultural groups and backgrounds of shared commonalities, and differences, which are shared through various mediums included, but not limited to experiential movement, fashion/costumes, culturally diverse music and narratives that push the trajectory of what dance represents as an art form. I also explore innovative concepts through multidisciplinary practices involving film and technology.
See what dance critics are saying about my work below:
“This woman is on fire. With an exquisite "Uncharted Territory," and a fall Director’s Choice concert unlike any I’ve ever seen...”-Cheryll Calon, Theater Jones
“... artistically diverse programming and choreography that flirts with the avant-garde, blends far-flung cultural aesthetics, and challenges ideas about what dance should be.”- Annie Wiles, D Magazine
“Bridget L. Moore is raising the stakes with her internationally flavored, no-holds-barred approach to choreography.”- Manny Mendoza, Dallas Morning News
According to the Wallace Foundation’s report on building millennial audiences the four main barriers to engaging multi-generational patrons are: Cost / Affordability / Value & Risk.
Acknowledging first that the current pandemic has contributed to dramatic declines in performance venues and people convening activities, B. MOORE DANCE is already effectively adapting to virtual and social media in order to link online audiences to our performance projects.
To keep the benefits of our program coming, B. MOORE DANCE is committed to using data and market research to cultivate new audiences and strengthening bonds with returning participants. Our plan consists of reducing the barriers to sustainability while targeting millennial audiences in the community.
Once connected to non-traditional and underserved participants we utilize technologies that are already sacrosanct to an increasingly media savvy multi-generational audience. We keep them engaged by providing day to day prompts and weekly check-ups with participants that are regulars with our social media platforms.
Recognizing that there are truly disadvantages to creating the atmospheric experience that audiences are accustomed to at local venues however, there are certain advantages to utilizing a less expensive ticket subscription and we expand the affordability by allowing access to our virtual performance experience.
