I am applying for this prestigious prize on behalf of my community which is the community of Katlehong to say that the renaissance is upon us. Many are young luminaries cable of using mathematics to better their families and life and we exist to unleash their potential and support them in their journey to attain academic success. This event will open new doors for us to expand our helping hand by funding employing more tutors and expanding our hub.
We intend to channel the money into organizing excursions to science centers such as Sci-bono and The Cradle of Mankind so that young luminaries in the township of Katlehong can get the opportunity to see how science manifests in real-life to simplify our standard of living. I would also install free WI-FI at the hub where we are currently working in the heart of Katlehong so that learners can access mathematics tutorials online and also we would expand our economies of scale by seeking to open new mathematics hubs in South African to shine the light to high school students who do not have proper learning facilities to properly amplify their academic performance.
Magaeng Mathematics is an online mathematics program that teaches mathematics to grade 10 to 12 learners using 2D animation. Our vision is to boost the academic performance of learners by providing high definition visuals to illustrate to learners how mathematics is applied in real-life. We achieve this by constantly journeying deep into the heart of rural areas and exploring the rich culture and heritage of ancient games, artifacts, clothing patterns and use these concepts to explain mathematical formulas so that learners can learn mathematics from the perspective of their origin. This awakens the images of their imagination and helps them not to only view mathematics as a subject that they need to pass to progress to the next grade but to view it as a timeless technique that they can use to bring efficiency to their community. Our short-term goal is to have 50 learners attending our free tutorial sessions at the hub and to have a lasting impact by assisting them to attain the threshold grade of 60% and also we would like to monetized our YouTube channel through digital marketing so that we can generate revenue and sustain our project.
Magaeng Mathematics offers mathematics tutorials to learners from grade 4 to 12 and Unisa first year mathematics online and one on one physically at the Hub in Katlehong. Our online e-learning program consists of YouTube tutorial videos that we post every Friday which are aligned with the curriculum of our target market. We are situated in Katlehong at the Ekurhuleni Hub and we offer to learners in the geo-graphic area free Wi-fi with our Rain sim card so that they can have access to internet and tutorial videos that could simplify their lives. We work from 9:00 to 16:30 CAT at the hub to assist learners from Alafang, Fumana and Mogobeng.
There is a perpetual steady decline in the mathematics pass rate and a pass mark. Our pass mark is only 30% and only 54% of matriculants in the 2020 in South Africa managed to score over 30% (https://theconversation.com/wh... mathematics is a national pandemic which the South African Department of Basic Education is facing and the tutorial prices are quite inflated for township learners to afford that is why we invaded the space to offer them affordable solutions.
The use of 2D animation allows learners to see how mathematics is applied in real life. We create animated videos and each chapter has its tailor made scene which clearly illustrates the practical application of the concept. For example, when we teach financial mathematics we create a banking environment and introduce learners to concepts such as government bonds so that they can fully know how to use the concepts of time value of money to improve their standard of living. We are operating digitally so learners can have access to a tutorial video at any time which affords them the convenience to learn at any time they want.
Our working space is with a walking distance from several schools in Katlehong. We partner with Tshepo1Million which is a government organization and we collaborated with the HOD of mathematics at Alafang High Schools which is one of the school situated five minutes from our hub. They gave us access to the school to present to learners about our tutorial program which is free at the Hub. We have reached 1300 subscriber on YouTube and our learners have shown a slight improvement after being initiated into our sacred society of amplifying the mastery of thoughts and deciphering the mysteries of science.
