International Transformation Foundation (ITF)
- Kenya
- Rwanda
If selected as winner, the funds would enable us to completely replicate our project “A water kiosk at school” in Kenya, Rwanda and in the Gambia. Thus, 5914 school children will no longer be absent from school to secure water for their families. They will have improved sanitation and health at their schools. And about 35500 people will have access to clean tap water within their communities:
- Gambia: Build one (1) water kiosk at school model at a primary school located in Baja Kunda, Wuli District. This Kiosk will provide clean tap water and associated benefits to at least 634 students at the school and about 4000 people residing around the school.
- Kenya: Build six (6) water kiosk at school model at six primary schools across the country. These Kiosks will provide clean tap water and associated benefits to at least 3108 students and about 18000 people residing around these schools.
- Rwanda: Build three (3) water kiosk at school model at three primary schools located in Muhanga District, Southern province. These Kiosks will provide clean tap water and associated benefits to at least 2172 students and about 13500 people residing around these schools.

It started in the aftermath of the 1994 Rwanda’s genocide. I grew up in the Southern Province of Rwanda, a rural area stricken with poverty. During the genocide, I lost almost everyone making it even more difficult to meet daily needs. I was a 14-year-old high school student, when I was then forced to search for a job. The frustrations I went through balancing school, working to pay school fees, and supporting my siblings started a passion in me to create opportunities for fellow young people to ensure that less young people go through the same frustrations.
Eventually, in 2009, with support of fellow youth from East Africa region, we established International Transformation Foundation (ITF), a youth-led non-profit organization, with vision of providing educational self-development programs encompassing leadership and entrepreneurship to harness creativity among youth and reduce the unemployment rate in the region.
One of our campaign is access to clean water through “A water kiosk at school” in rural communities, where school-going children have to walk long distances to secure water for their families before/ after going to school causing absenteeism resulting to school drop-outs.

In Kenya Only 1/3 of the population has access to clean water close to their homes. Same issue in many African Countries. Therefore, Children have to walk at least 6km to secure water for their families before/ after going to school causing absenteeism which leads to dropping out of school.
Inspired by this experience growing up in Kenya and Rwanda’s communities, ITF members worked on a research project about a sustainable clean drinking water system.
One of the main insights gained is that most rural communities do not have tap water system at all. The problem with water projects are:
- the water system with the technical components to get groundwater to the tap and
- the paying system that describes what to pay for, how to maintain the system and how the business is set up; the social system.
A WATER KIOSK AT SCHOOL is a rural community school based and students managed business selling clean tap water to community residents at affordable price. It:
- eliminates the need for students to travel many miles for water. As a result, they increase time spent in school. Additionally, they acquire business and leadership skills.
- generates much needed income for schools.
A Water Kiosk at School is :
Characterized by:
- WATER SAVING TAP STATION - Our water stations not only provide clean drinking water but also save water. No water is wasted with our auto-stop tap.
- DRIP TAPS for HAND WASHING FACILITIES - reduces 90% of water usage.
- REFILLABLE WATER BOTTLES - made of BPA-free plastic for the children to drink from.
- JERRY CARRY KARTS - reduce physical injury from carrying loads of water on head.
School based and students managed:
Providing practical education that bridges the gap between school and work while generating much-needed income for schools.
A community project:
The school and community residents work together to set up the kiosk within community resources context. With a community-based committee.
Revolving Fund:
ITF make the initial investment to set up the water infrastructure. The school then, sale water to the community at price decided by community residents. Proceeds are primarily used for sustainability of the water infrastructure, supporting school activities, and paying off the initial investment which is then redeployed to an additional school/community.
