When I founded Harvest107 at only 12 years old, I had one goal in mind: to end hunger. Through our mission of teaching sustainable agriculture, we have been able to help thousands of people feed themselves and their families. With the Elevate Prize, we would be able to finally grow into additional countries (Currently working in Haiti + USA). Our goal is to open training centers across Haiti and in other nations teaching sustainable agriculture, nutrition (and how to prevent malnutrition), and more for both children and adults. The funding would go towards opening the first training center in Haiti (employing teachers, securing a property, setting up demonstration garden and classrooms, etc.). We would then partner with communities in additional countries (already have connections in Guatemala + Nicaragua), addressing the needs of each community, and then opening training centers. This funding would help us to expand our sustainable practices so that the people we work with can support themselves for years (and generations!) to come. We believe in giving people a hand up out of hunger.
At age 12, I read a book about a failing family farm that was revived after sustainable practices were taught to the children of the community. I learned about the HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of people suffering from hunger. I was devastated. How could I have a kitchen filled with food yet there were people who didn’t have enough food to eat? So, I decided to start Harvest107.
Harvest107 works in rural and urban areas. We partner with schools to create rooftop gardens providing fresh vegetables. We equip them with the knowledge on how to grow food at home with classes on composting, starting plants from kitchen scraps, harvesting produce + seeds (so you can replant!), DIY organic pesticides + fertilizers, and more.
We also partner with women farming communities, providing the resources and education needed to grow their farms so they can feed their family, and sell in the marketplace. We teach them agribusiness, how to grow a better quality and quantity crop, and more.
Our goal is to expand into countries around the world continuing our work. We believe everyone deserves the right to healthy food and are working to make it accessible to every person on the planet!
At Harvest107, we know 3 billion people aren't getting the nutrition they need. We believe everyone deserves healthy food to eat, so we help people grow organic, nutritious vegetables to end hunger sustainably.
Over 60% of those who are hungry and undernourished are women and children. We train female farmers in sustainability, health, and agriculture entrepreneurship. We provide women and their families with the information and tools they need to successfully grow their own organic vegetables. We work with over 50 female farmers in Haiti. Before the agribusiness and sustainability classes and assistance, the women and their families were eating vegetables 1x/week on average. After the courses, it increased to 4x/week. Their nutrition, quality + quantity of crop, and product market price all improved.
Harvest107 is also helping attack hunger by teaching children about growing organic food and how caring for the environment means a healthier future. We work with schools to build gardens and implement these lessons through our student sustainability course. Providing children with this knowledge has a multiplying effect, they take home what they’ve learned to their family and friends, and one day will pass it on to their children.
Harvest107 is innovative in how we meet people where they are. We are constantly learning and adapting through difficulties and finding applicable solutions for them. In developing nations, people don’t have access to cutting-edge technology and it’s simply unsustainable. At Harvest107, we believe regardless of what you have, you can create a food source. That’s why we teach how to create planters out of recycled pallets, plastic bottles, buckets, and other easily accessible resources. We get creative with the people we work with and find new ways to collect rain water, plant in small spaces, and seed storage. We are all about sustainability and collaboration, so everyone can have access to healthy, nutritious foods, even in the toughest of growing spaces.
Harvest107’s work isn’t over until hunger is eliminated for all. Here’s how we are ending hunger now and our plan for the future:
1. We have our plant-grow-sustain model of development (planting gardens, how to grow it, teach you to sustain it)
2. We never push our methods on the people we work with, we are always invited in. We never wanted to be the people who came in and pushed their methods on others. They have to want it too, they have to be invested. Because a partnership only works if everyone wants it to.
3. We invest in the underrepresented. Women and children are our #1 priority. It has been proven that investing in smallholder farmers and women is the key to ending hunger and creating food security. Because when you invest in them, you’re not only investing in the end of hunger, but also the futures of the next generations.
4. We are focused on growth. We would like to begin setting up training centers around the world so we can increase our reach into communities and have space to demonstrate and teach sustainable agriculture to people of all ages.
