Through Audacious I am contributing to safer, equitable sustainable ecosystems. In Uganda women and girls contribute 60% working population to food production. Agriculture in general contributes 32%gross domestic product to the country's economy. Women and girls are at the bottom of the hierarchy in decision making, access to, ownership and control of resources. Violence against girls is still record high with existent food taboos that discriminate them from consumption of healthy foods.AUDACIOUS Competitors are transnational corporations with capacity to disseminate their messages and servicess globally with relative ease. Advocacy for food sovereignty and diversity on the other hand is only gaining ground; an uphill task against the dominant narrative for single foods cushioned patriachal and capitalistic systems.
When selected as winner, the Elevate prize will enable Audacious Africa us to increase on schools and communities of engagement. We will conduct buzz sessions for equipping girls and women to participate advocacy for shifting power narratives on food.
Our table talks and school based foodcentric activities will increase women and girls ability to make healthy decisions concerning their bodies and ecosystems.
We will shift negative patriarchal narratives that exclude and disempower women and girls from equal contribution to creating sustainable solutions by building their aspirations, confidence and voice .
Sarah Nakame draws her passion and mission from her mother's experience-a senior two graduate that raised 5 children and ensured they always had healthy meals from her small garden. For the last decade Sarah's work with a mentoring programme for young women contributed to a sea of young women and girls with voice and agency in Uganda- many of those have become leaders in their own right. She did her masters in development management thesis on women's contribution to the preservation of indegenous foods. In Uganda women contribute 60% of 32% of the country's largest contributor to gross domestic product. They have the least resources and voice and yet have resiliently upheld food diversity systems and chains. Sarah's interactions with women and communities during this study process birthed Audacious Africa.
Sarah's goal for the future is a world where girls, women are at the center of building sustainable solutions to violence against women and healthy people centered food supply chains.
Audacious Africa was perceived out of this passion to contribute to platforms that embolden girls, women and young people to overcome limitations paused by retrogressive culture and patriachal norms to become champions for bold ecosystems.
Lack of food and poor malnutrition negatively impacts confidence, mental health and proper growth of individuals. Women are disproportionately affected-in Uganda food taboos still exist for women. Cultural beliefs and practices discriminate against women's choice of food to grow and eat, land ownership and agency.
In Uganda Audacious Africa creates awareness on importance of healthy foods to women's bodies, confidence and agency. The right to not just food but healthy, accessible food is at the center of our work against violence that women and girls disproportionately face.
Our established school gardens nurture and reframe food growing as a rewarding job for young people- the next generation of food growers. In the past, agriculture was relegated to uneducated and community failures. Covid-19 proved that when all things come to a stand still, healthy food growers is what we all turned to not only for survival but to build immunity and resilience to harsh diseases.
We introduced seed banks; an initiative that will enable us scout for best resilient and adaptive seeds for preservation of food diversities in communities and to give power back to women and communities.
Audcaious work is disruptive to normalized and growing single food consumptions, factory based food commodities and Patriachal cultures that discriminate against women's potential, aspirations and agency.
The re-introduction of school gardens is an innovative approach that will be leveraged to center food discussions while tackling violence against girls and promoting healthy eating habits. For women and girls healthy eating is crucial for self confidence and self belief as education and other rights. Girls in Uganda are primary care givers and in times of crisis, due to negative cultural beliefs boys are still prioritised when choice of who to continue school has to be made. Audacious works to dismantle and demystify these beliefs and practices.
Our seed bank competitions and establishments are innovative approach to advocating for equal participation of girls and women, fighting violence, discrimination against girls. We believe that putting the right seeds in the hands of women and girls will empower them to behold their role, capacity and commitment to themselves and the sustainability of our world.
Through Utilisation of conventional media platforms, Audacious Africa has published different articles on food diversity and the dangers of single narratives of cash crop growing in Ugandas through national newspapers.https://www.newvision.co.ug/ar... and https://www.monitor.co.ug/ugan...
By advocating for healthy short food chains, Audacious is pointing people to the benefits of healthy living food to an equitable eco system where humans and other creatures cohabit for mutual benefit.
The Bioversity estimates that forest cover and water catchment areas worldwide are being destroyed at terrific figures.
Call to sustainable healthy short food chains is also a call for wealth redistribution. When girls women are all recognized as food growers; with their own choice to diversity , wealth is redistributed from large transnational corporations, science and research is refocused to include diverse food species and the people at the bottom of ladder regain voice and agency.
Most importantly, globally, humanity has learned that we are what we eat. A healthy body, mind, soul and confidence spring from the food we eat.
Audcaious is about recreating the stories, connections, and history created by healthy small gardens in communities, schools and cultures with women and girls at the center of it all.
