PerúTeQuiero
- Peru
July 28th 2021 Peruvians will commemorate its 200 years as an independent Republic. Unfortunately, we have almost nothing to celebrate. COVID-19 pandemic reveals our fragile State, our fragmented society and our pending social challenges. A bottom-up social movement could be a more trustful and effective way to reunite trust among Peruvians and cultivate the power of collective action. PeruTeQuiero (PTQ) civic movement could become a glimpse of hope Peruvians need in times of stress and mourning. It is a powerful collective action vehicle to resolve our biggest challenges as society. In our first year of operation, we ignited a network composed of more than 7,000 Peruvians and 100 organizations, reached 10 million Peruvians in our launching campaign and developed pilots of change in education, health and mental health which constitute proofs of points of our impact. Winning Elevate Prize could give us more knowledge, connections and resources to scale the movement and transition from an ignite phase to an massive impact phase. We have the strong conviction to scale our movement to every corner of Peru. We also have the dream to learn from this experience and share and replicate its purpose and architecture to other countries of Latin America.
Early 2009, I returned to Peru after working on the US–Peru Free Trade Agreement (FTA). I decided to lived in rural communities. One day I went to the “Paya Yatiwi” Festival at Puno. A 9-year old boy caught my attention because of his energetic dancing and huge smile. I asked Junior: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” His smile faded. "I do not understand the question... What,?! Can I grow up?!". Then I thought: “What is the human face of FTA in this kid”. Weeks after, I decided to start an educational movement. Today, EnseñaPeru, composed by 1000 leaders nationwide, is one of the most influential actors in Peruvian education. I believe every problem has already its solution. However, the solutions are micro-small, non-contextualized and disconnected. I strongly believe that exponential scale of change is possible by trust (to restore bridges for community-ship), vision (to draft dreams for partner-ships) and action (to work collectively for leader-ship). My purpose is to be an strategic, gentle and inspiring orchestrator to design visions and vehicles of change for unity and compassion in Latin America. PTQ could become an scalable solution for change in Peru and the region.
Peru low income communities faces a triple criss: social, economical and political. Peru ranks 1st worldwide in total excess death per million people. 1 out of 200 Peruvians died due to COVID19. Peru will be one of the most affected economies worldwide, which lead to an historically increase of 10 points in poverty. Finally, two thirds of Peruvians are unsatisfied with democracy. Moreover, population had low trust on traditional leadership to resolve this crisis. Only 3% Peruvians trust on political parties. Mourning, poverty and mistrust. Peru is facing a multidimensional crisis only comparable to periods of war or terrorism.
To address this complex challenge, PTQ seeks to promote solidarity and collective action convening citizens and organizations in the 25 regions of Peru to jointly face the diverse effects of COVID-19 pandemic. Our vision is to inspire trust among Peruvians thanks to the agile response of their civil society. Our mission is to be a civic participation platform for large-scale collective action for positive impact in Peru. Specifically, in PTQ we:
CONVENE: Invite individual will -people and organizations- to join PTQ and work together in favor of Peru.
COORDINATE: Inspire and design collective action projects for attaining Peruvian biggest challenges
The way we lead
We decided to create a non-traditional leadership structure. We do not have a single leader, but 3 co-leaders and a 12-member "Driving Group", which rather than taking top-down decisions, reflects about the context, give ideas and guidelines as advisors and sounding board to +30 leaders that lead committees and back-bone support teams.
The way we organize
We developed a 4 M´s organizational structure: Machine, which manage governance, develop and share culture and generate national networks. Mind, which guide through analysis and research and develop and monitor our Theory of Change. Move, which maps and co-designs the deployment of collective actions. Motor, which create powerful communication campaign and digital strategy. An execute Secretariat as a back bone team coordinates, aligned and serve the M´s teams.
The way we impact
Collective action is in the core of our movement soul. We have defined 6 relevant challenges: malnutrition, bad education, fragile mental health, COVID contagious, SME collapse, low citizen engagement. We have convened around 100 NGOs and companies with impact and expertise on these challenges. They have decided a Theory of Change, OKRs in short and medium term and define 1-2 pilots to start a collective impact working together.
PTQ Theory of Change.
