Leather and Leather Products Development Center Trust
Emanating from the last year's SOLVE PRIZE which I haven't been included IAM more determined to take part this time around as our vision still befits the THEME at hand
I As a founder leading LLEPDEC TRUST as previously applied for vie to provide SKILLS in Leather Value Chain to Left behind COMMUNITIES who toil day in and day out domesticating goats and yet the wasted skins are thrown away to dogs if not cooked as road side delicacies.
The proposed program wishes to add value to the goat skins by
Proper and prompt preservation of the skins,
Vegetable ecotanning of the goat skins to produce leather.
And finally produce Artifacts and other products such as mats, shoes, sandals, bags, purses.
As such jobs and wealth is created and livelihood at rural and semi urban setup is realised thereby wiping off the destitution of the left behind communities.
This skill provision would eventually lure those extra devoted to embark on more venturous activities towards scalable operations for Rural and semi urban sociobusiness.
With programs of rural electrification now being pursued, rural industrialization is conceivable for better returns and manageable scalable operations.
Our VISION primarily is to PROVIDE SKILLS in the LEATHER VALUE CHAIN from domesticated animals where the skins are massively wasted after the slaughter of the ruminants.
In so doing , the skins are added value to usable leather which will be made into school shoes and other leather products for use by the communities themselves and would be vended for better value for money ensuring job and wealth creation within the communities dealing with the slaughtering of the ruminants within the communities.
Our goal is to create the rare know-how which would eventually be turned into a scalable venture for Rural and semi urban left behind population benefitting for sustainable livelihood..
This would deter dangerous idleness among the youth leading to being involved in drugs, prostitution and unwanted pregnancies in search fircwyicj money.
It would also lift the standards of living above poverty lines allowing availability of day to day basic needs.
Due to Monopoly by investors with the know-how. Any slight slump in overseas operation immediately impact on the basic livelihood of the indigenous population despite owning the ruminants around their homes as is the case now globally where tanneries have closed off and inland partly processing collaborative lay off workers outright despite having the massive stock of the skins.
It is therefore imperative that the communities at this critical era are empowered technically to Grab the BULL BY THE HORNS to add value and create jobs and wealth thereby improving the day to day livelihood from the ventures appropriately nurtured to utilize the abundant and massively wasted skins within our reach.
Groups of 20 to 30 individuals can be empowered and within a month or 2 they would be earning a living by being off taken the leather and products that they would eventually produce.
In any country, it is envisaged that almost 4 groups can be nurtured to embark on this program initially of around 100 individuals and they would produce 5000 sq feet of goat leather enough to make 1,000 - 2000 school shoes every month earning a gross income of 20,000 USD per month.
It is in innovative in the sense that it upgrades what our ancestors did to utilize the skins in their raw state and very little tannage was being there by done with bucks and roots of trees to render
It is innovative in the sense that the devised process endeavours to utilize a number of homebased ingredients such as papaya trypsin for softening the pelt and uses battery acid for acidification as opposed to industrial concentrated acid .
It uses glycerine and cocoa butter for oiling.
But most of all is that it is appropriate technology where u use mostly homebased equipment to do the processing where u don't need electricity in the first place.
Eventually it is unique in the sense that it creates jobs and wealth at unimaginable cottage level giving commendable leather which can be used outrightly for Rural and semi urban enterprising sustainably and commendably as a scalable venture.
Initially, the goat skins are massively wasted day in day out.
By providing the preliminary skill of proper Preservation, the uselessness of the skin as a raw material for tanning upgrades for better value for money even for export.
If locally tanned by vegetable tannage it gets readily available market for artifacts and many leather products which most of the individual entrepreneurs are hungry for as they normally can't get the material from big tanneries who prefer supplying big orders from esteemed companies.
The monopoly by big tanners will be averted and jobs and wealth will be created by the vulnerable dedicated msmes earning reasonably well thereby advancing the communities livelihood sustainably.
