Problem: Sustainability is a topic of vital importance in this 21st century world. Although the role of education as a catalyst for building a better and more sustainable future for all has gained increasing recognition, there is a shortage of development opportunities for Educators to get a better understanding of how to include sustainability in education and how to make it engaging for the students. Few professional development opportunities for teachers in this area mean that even the most passionately eco-minded educators can lack the skills and confidence to make their green teaching dreams a reality. At the same time rapid deforestation in countries like Indonesia cause the erosion of indigenous knowledge around sustainability and biodiversity. Indigenous people have a broad knowledge of how to live sustainably. However, formal education systems have disrupted the practical everyday life aspects of informal education through indigenous knowledge and their ways of learning, replacing them with abstract knowledge and academic ways of learning.Today, there is a grave risk that much informal education of the Indigenous communities is being lost and, along with it, valuable knowledge about ways of living sustainably. Mother Jungle values Indigenous stories to navigate the future of education. We can live in modernity, but use the ancient and indigenous knowledge as reference.
Solution 1
S.E.E.D. global program: Mother Jungle organises high quality immersive courses for educators focusing on 'Sustainable Education for Environmental Development'. Through learning from the local 'Mothers in the Jungle' and a variety of permaculture and field experts, educators enjoy a life changing experience. The Jungle is a perfect place to play with an awareness of the impact of our thinking and decisions and an ideal place for participants to connect with nature and learn valuable skills. Goal is to effectively incorporate Indigenous Knowledge into Professional Development for Educators as an alternative whole-school framework focusing on Sustainable Development in order to require a shift away from the current strong subject-based, content-focused and examination driven curricula around the world.
Solution 2
Short video episodes of traditional stories of the Indigenous Mothers all around Indonesia about their land and environment with a focus on values, sustainable practices and beliefs. Every storytelling episode is embedded in an online educational module for educators to learn how to pass along the indigenous knowledge and engage the next generation with the wisdom, traditions, and knowledge of the mothers of the jungle.
Change the world through utilizing the power of film making and VR in order to digitally store the ancient stories, offer a platform for the female indigenous communities to speak up and give educators a real-life experience and activate their imagination to enhance diverse values and understanding around culture and biodiversity for the next generation.
