More than 70% of Chicago's first Coronavirus deaths were among African Americans. Black residents died at a rate 2 to 3 times higher than others.
Underlying health conditions prevalent in black + latinx communities like hypertension & diabetes made those residents more vulnerable to the disease.
Science proves that yoga + mindfulness practice can significantly improve mental, emotional, and physical well-being research found that access to these enriching practices was extremely limited & sometimes non-existent in neighborhoods of color & low income.
WOKE Chicago is a minority female-led non-profit organization (501c3) formed in response to 2020's cries for racial justice in America & COVID-19's impact on communities of color.
It was initiated in summer 2020 to disrupt systemic inequity in well-being. Our work creates access to trauma-informed movement and mindfulness programs in Chicago communities & schools.
Our Youth Yoga program was developed in response to the traumatic impacts on communities of color.
The program is designed to build the inner resilience needed to navigate physical, mental, and emotional stress and overcome barriers to learning.
With the support of community partners, we share both virtual and in-person movement and mindfulness-focused programs in community centers and schools.
