Water Access Consulting was started in 2017 by unemployed Young women and men in Northern Uganda after the 20 years of insurgency in northern Uganda most the government put the most focus on infrastructures like hospitals, roads, and security living the most vibrant sector of WASH after lived and got educated from the camp for 20 years
The youths started by looking for a sustainable solution to WASH especially when people are relocated back to their home with no safe water, hygiene, and sanitation infrastructures coupled to the outbreak of cholera Disease thereby starting a Community based organization with the hope of getting funding to support its work and later registering it Company limited to do work that will later support the charity component of the organization
Now water Access Consulting is a social impact organization that has positively impacted in to the live of more than 45325 lives in northern Uganda, through its interventions in the Northern part of Uganda
We are addressing the problem of access to safe water supply, hygiene, sanitation, and Environmental insecurity in Nothern Uganda ,
Water and sanitation are essential for life and health, but they are also essential for dignity, empowerment, and prosperity. Water and sanitation are human rights, fundamental to every child and adult.
According to Unicef 33>people of all children in Uganda do not have access to safe water, 60% of all children live 60 minutes from a water source.
A considerable number of households in the Kitgum district do not have access to safe water wells. The Coverage with water points even with shallow water is not sufficient, villagers have to walk long distances.
Poor sanitation and hygiene is a major health concern in Northern Uganda. Poor sanitation leads to diarrheal diseases, which are responsible for the deaths of children under five (WHO).
Water Access Consulting involves the local community in finding sustainable solutions to their problems by
1. Implementing Operation and maintenance of the water source points using pump insurance
2. Implementing community-led total sanitation initiatives to address the hygiene and sanitation in the community
3. Promoting the restoration of indigenous tree species by raising and distributing the tree seedlings
we are Using a community Pump insurance scheme for operation and maintenance
This is when the Community through the water user committee agreed to insure their water source points for operation and maintenance roles that will be taken over by Water Access Consulting for an agreed period of time by paying a stipulated amount of Premium monthly
It has improved on the uptime of the water source point from 46% to 90% as most of the water well under the scheme has significant uptime and making water accessible to the community most time
This has also strengthened the relationship between the water users communities and the community as issues of accountability is now handled directly by water access consulting
This initiative has proven to be better than sinking more new boreholes with very poor maintenance has it will in the long run reduced the government expenditures on O&M as the community is directly taking charge for mobilization of fund for O&M
We are mobilizing and building the capacity of the community water users on post water well construction support by advocating for a community-driven operation and maintenance scheme (Pump insurance scheme) and this has to encourage
1. Accountability and transparency by the community water users committees and their willingness to collect tariff for operation and maintenance, this has encouraged trust between the water users and the management community
2. Willingness and ability of the water users to pay tariff, ensures the committee always pay the premium on time
3. Routine operation and maintenance of the water well using the locally available trained water pump mechanics, would directly ensure water availability throughout the year
4. Investing in selling water well spare parts, would enable the availability of the spare parts
