Enrolment and retention will be increased.1200 women and girls out of school will have functional literacy skills .
A latest Economic Survey of Pakistan 2019 report says that literacy rate of Sindh has decreased from 63.0% to 62.2%, triggering a new challenge for the Sindh’s education department. Enrolment ratio of girls in school in Sindh has declined to 39% as compared to 61% of boys. Overall dropout rate in primary classes in Sindh is 23%, according to an investigative report. Main reason of low enrolment and high dropout is distance of schools from settlements. In an average, distance of schools from the nearest village is 4 to 5 KM and many parents do not send their girls to far off schools as they fear that their girls might face harassed and assaults by disobedient people on the way to and fro .Hence, for girls access is one of the major factors for low enrolment and high drop out.
A model entitled wheel for education has been implemented in 7 villages supported 50 girls to continue their secondary school who otherwise have left schools after completing primary and might not have been able to continue lower secondary grades because of distanced secondary schools from their villages. These girls are offering coaching classes for women &girls who never went school
Wheel for education is an innovative intervention which is acceptable at local level and has been piloted. 50 girls who received transportation facility offered coaching classes to 3 each totaling to 150 girls and young women on functional literacy who never went to school or left school in 1st or 2nd grade. That has great multiplication impact of project to reach more girls and women to increase female literacy and empowerment in rural areas .
SCF is proposing to scale up the model of wheel for education to reach out 400 girls of 35 villages of 20 girls’ secondary schools to complete their five years cycle of education. These 400 girls will offer their coaching classes to 1200 women and girls on functional literacy. Girl students will be trained to act as transition guides for educating and encouraging their peer and juniors for further education thus girls will retain at school to complete the cycle of secondary grades. Community will share 20% of monthly expenses to the transportation thus the project has sustainability to continue. The endowment fund will also be increasing its size by mobilizing other existing resources to reach more girls.
SCF is mobilizing financial resource in country and abroad including government, individuals, NGOs and donors to expand its secondary education program -wheel for education . Establishment of education Transport support fund is very effective approach has ensured the access of girls belong to poor families to education in rural areas.
