There high levels of biodiversity loss with the communities. There are currently no alternatives to allow natural regeneration. There is need to persuade people to conserve the natural species by encouraging the planting of fast maturing hybrids.
Commercial charcoal production and coupled with the increased need for fuelwood by the increasing population will increase natural resources degradation. We are planning to introduce the use of biogas at all levels. This will create employment and additional income for the target group as they will be growing feedstocks or agricultural waste to sell for processing biogas. This will reduce charcoal production, reducing biodiversity loss, increasing use of clean energy and additional income from sale of biogas and organic fertilizer from slurry.
Up to 99% of our target communities practice unsustainable agricultural practices and subsistence agriculture. There poor post-harvest handling due lack of appropriate technologies making farming unprofitable and food unhealthy. We shall promote large-scale application of organic fertilisers from biogas slurry in addition to sustainable practices to resolve the problem of decline in agricultural productivity. Proper post-harvest handling will be ensured through timely drying/dehydrating produce using household and community solar dryers to self-life and quality and health of food.
