Biha Eco Venture
- Uganda
Every year over 2.5million tons of plastic content such as medical plastic waste is created in hospitals, veterinary clinics, beverages companies and homes which ends up into landfills polluting our water supplies and entire eco system when incinerated, this emits dangerous greenhouse gasses such methane, nitrous oxide which are human carcinogens causing neurological and incurable disorders, global greenhouse gases resulting to climate change. However they can be given a new life, if selected as winners, we are on track to change that. We shall use the funds basically to mechanize our production process to increase our daily production capacity, restructuring our production facility and organizing our logistics. We plan to open up three warehouses in Uganda so that we have a constant supply to our clients. We aim at creating a network of decent sheltered eco homes through providing repurposed building blocks, plastic wood and roofing eco tiles to enrich housing poverty.
We are on track to improve 2000 homes and schools with repurposed building materials reaching over 4000 beneficiaries including children, preventing 3.5kgmil of global greenhouse gasses that would have resulted from burning and waste incineration practices, Transforming 300 metric tons of hazardous plastic content into building materials.
I grew up in a humble family background 8, for which access to essential needs of life such as good housing, good health and other essential needs of life were difficult to access for my family and community, I share the same experience with over 18 million people in rural Uganda living in informal housing where living conditions are often substandard and unsafe. I left school to become an entrepreneur, at 17 started due to my passion for environment and need of promoting positive change in my community since I promised myself to do something about this situation.
Over 25 million Ugandans lack decent shelter due to lack of affordable building options, I want to change that by creating a network of decent homes through proving alternative building materials, In a broader picture, an estimated 3 billion people will lack adequate shelter before 2030 in Africa, in order to meet this growing demand we shall have to build 60 homes per minute before 2030. Using available resources, I launched Durable Home Network that is working to alleviate and uplift communities by providing low cost durable building materials on credit distributed to low income households to enrich home improvement and housing poverty.
Africa faces a major housing crisis due to rapid growing population and limited options to access affordable building materials. “As a result, 90 percent of Africans live in informal housing, where living conditions are often substandard, unsafe and without basic services like water, electricity and sanitation (Africa Bank) 2019. On 90 % of Ugandans who live in rural areas, only 11% of these can afford to purchase building materials to improve their to prevent themselves from hygienic such as jigger infestations that led to social exclusion and sometimes death due to lack of upfront income to improve their homes.
We have a fighting chance to build the future that works for both our people and the planet to go towards a just circular economy for all.
Since most of these people can’t improve their homes due to accessibility and affordability, We provide a premium affordable building materials at a low cost to lowest income earners who can’t pay upfront costs to access these materials. This is through provision of a comprehensive service bundle that includes financing, delivery and installation to enrich housing poverty. Our processes engage waste transforming which saves our ecosystem.
We depend on waste materials, these non-bio degradable materials take long to decompose such as plastic and industrial poultry eggshell waste, and we look at planet centered recovery that focuses on reducing our carbon footprint by encouraging waste reduction through gradual green transition. Our regenerative processes engage waste transforming which saves our ecosystem contributing to SDGs 9, 12 and 13.
We turn waste into affordable building products that is used to improve homes in eastern and central Uganda to enrich housing poverty as we promote greener communities through green building technologies, we aim at promoting wellbeing and have reduced inequalities so that people have better lives and achieve their potential. We ensure this through providing alternative home improvement package inform of building materials through partnering with local groups.
These groups are fundamental part in our venture because they meet weekly to collect savings and provide internal loans and this is a large market base for us to make construction materials available to people and also a potential basis to manage payment of the products on agreed period. We unlock three immediate outcomes for lowest income household; access to package of affordable building products, credit potential and technical support.
We aim at strengthening the local economy and creating wealth by tackling people who are economically inactive especially women promoting job creation.
We cut incomes of rural women by 70% incurred treating diseases caused by hygienic threats enabling families to begin paths to prosperity and typically see a 40-45% increase in their income.
Saving each family $350 annually medical bills treating hygienic related diseases such as jigger infestation resulted from lack of affordable building option for improved shelter.
Minimizing cost of construction making alternative building products accessible and affordable in developing population improving homes through green building revolution for safe decent eco living spaces.
we aim at promoting wellbeing and have reduced inequalities so that people have better lives, in stronger communities, and achieve their potential. We ensure this through providing alternative home improvement package inform of building materials through partnering with local groups.
