GeroCare Solutions Ltd
- Nigeria
GeroCare Solutions is pioneering medical inclusion by leveraging technology to provide access to health care to underserved segments of people across Africa beginning with the elderly and those in rural areas.
Our flagship product GeroCare Home Hospital is a cloud-based hospital structure that caters to the elderly by converting their homes to a primary health care centre with doctor home visits, home delivery of prescribed medication and home sample collections for tests as a subscription service paid for by their adult children and other concerned parties.
Our second product is THE MEDRA Telehealth Box – Medicare for Rural Areas that is solar-powered and works with or without an internet connection providing access to medical doctors as chat, voice calls or video calls. With MEDRA we are able to set up Tele clinics in rural areas that ordinarily have no access to a hospital or a doctor.
The elevate prize would go a long way in helping us actualize this mission as currently with the resources at our disposal we have already carried out over 11, 000 doctor home visits to the elderly and set up a teleclinic in a rural area providing over a thousand people access to healthcare.
A few years ago in the space of one year, my father had two strokes. This was not because there is nothing I could have done, I was simply living in another city at the time. subsequently, my mother called me and told me her blood pressure was extremely high and so was her blood sugar but what she said next can be said to be the main driver for what we do at GeroCare. She said i had neglected them. Initially, i thought this was not possible but after close scrutiny of my life, I realized that while focused on my career and my family I had subconsciously neglected them. I also realized that this problem was not peculiar to me but to millions of Africans living and working apart from their parents. This begged the question - what if there was a way that you could provide medical care for your parents in Nigeria from where ever you were in the world and also remind them that you care? This was why my co-founders and I launched gerocare to make it extremely easy for Nigerians within and outside Nigeria to provide home medical care for their parents.
The vast majority of elderly citizens (65 years or older in age) in Nigeria, and many other African countries, battle severely with deteriorating health across many different ailments. In most of these cases, neither the state nor their adult children or extended families are able to manage this situation adequately. GeroCare is solving the absence of a structure for medical care for the elderly by enabling Nigerians within and outside Nigeria to provide regular doctor home visits, home delivery or drugs and home sample collection for tests for their parents. They receive the entire hospital experience at home
Nigeria is Africa’s most populous country with an estimated population of 182 million citizens in 2016 majority of which reside in rural areas. This has led to the country being greatly underserved in the health care sphere with an inadequate number of both health and doctors to man these facilities. With MEDRA Telehealth Box Tele clinics that serve as primary health care centers are set up in these rural areas that provide access to doctors remotely via voice calls in areas with no internet and video calls where there is internet access.
GeroCare Home Hospital
GeroCare has created a cloud-based service in which all those providing health services do not need to be located in one building but can participate remotely from where ever they are through their mobile application linked to that of the primary care provider who is the doctor that interfaces with the patient. A system that is easily scalable and replicable across cities and across countries. Hospitals without buildings where just by interaction with your doctor at home every other thing you need can be delivered to your home.
MEDRA by GeroCare
By leveraging on the combined 45 years experience of the team in healthcare and technology, we have successfully been able to set up a tele- clinic in a rural area who have never had access to doctors for one-tenth the cost of setting up a physical clinic without a limitation to the standard of care provided.
GeroCare’s vision is to leverage technology to provide access to medical care to underserved segments of people across Africa. We are beginning by leveraging technology to provide access to healthcare to the elderly and those in rural areas.
As regards the elderly the vast majority of elderly in Nigeria, and many other African countries, battle with deteriorating health. In most of these cases, neither the state nor their adult children or extended families are able to manage this situation adequately. GeroCare is solving the absence of a structure for medical care for the elderly and improving on the current average life expectancy in Nigeria and the rest of Africa. Currently, we have been able to provide over 11,000 home visits to the elderly.
We have successfully been able to provide over 1000 people access to medical care with the first of our Tele clinics deployed in a rural riverine community which is a 3-hour boat ride from the nearest city. A community that never had access to a medical doctor but now can receive a consultation via the MEDRA telehealth box. There are millions of people like this across Africa and we intend to replicate these tele clinics.
