Grow an Equality Mindset and Heart
Overcome racism and prejudice is a global challenge.
Singing Equality across America and around the World is our solution. It's a program that is planting the seeds of equality, diversity and inclusion through the power of a song. Once you plant this in a person's heart it will serve a lifetime.
We are sharing the program with schools, organizations and individuals across the globe to empower and inspire the present and future generation to value differences and be inclusive. Dr. King recognized we can pass all the laws we want, we cannot
legislate the heart. Valuing one and other begins in the heart.
Our program educates the heart. See a video of 800 children singing the song and performing the verse in sign language: http://worldunityinc.org/asset...
Having millions across the globe learn this song and use it as a tool would empower people and transform workplaces and communities around the world.
Racism and prejudice impacts all communities across the globe. Conscious and unconscious bias contributes to it. All humans have it. No one is immune. It is part of human conditioning. Children learn it at quiet a young age. The medical profession recognized that as early as ages 2 to 4 children can internalize racial biases and by age 12 many become set in their beliefs. I remember presenting the Sun poem to students in a poetry workshop, asking the students who were 9 years old at the time how many of them experienced discrimination. Three quarters of the hands went up.
With the internet young children are exposed to a lot of stereotypes and biases in media, the culture and society. What tools are we giving students or the general public they can use every day any where to can empower them to value themselves and any one who is different from them?
The internet and social media did not exist 30 years ago. It is having a profound impact on our humanity. Biases and hatred can be promoted on digital platforms 24/7. In 2019 hate crimes towards Jews rose 14% and in 2020 150% towards Asian Americans.
Our program is planting the seeds of equality, diversity, and inclusion through, "Singing Equality across America and around the World." It can empower people to become more self-aware of unconscious biases and cultivate a mindset of valuing differences. It is available to everyone and we are especially targeting schools. We are giving them a powerful program to help create an equitable environment by giving them a tool that can empower them to value differences and inclusion and serve them for the rest of their lives.
"One day the world will hear the song and it will stop discrimination," is a comment one student wrote after her teacher taught the song, led the class in a discussion and invited them to write about the impact it had on them.
Technology is a powerful tool empowering us to showcase and spread our program across the globe to inspire the world. We've shared it with schools across the nation to engage them to teach the students the song. One school district was inspired by a video of 429 students singing our song and performing it in sign language they had 800 children sing the song and perform the verse in sign language. http://worldunityinc.org/asset...
We are serving the present and next generation through our program, "Singing Equality across America and around the World." It is a major initiative of World Unity Inc. We are planting seeds of equality in minds and hearts. These simple powerful words can serve an individual for a lifetime - "Are you greater than the sun that shines on everyone, no matter who you are we all see the stars. Black, Brown, Yellow, Red and White the sun does not discriminate." And the line, "We are equally here to equally grow."
This song cultivates open mindedness, humility and forgiveness, qualities we need to engender to overcome conscious and unconscious biases and racism. If we don't these negative vices can impact personal and professional growth.
Our program is for everyone, we have especially been targeting public schools because they represent 100% of the future. Aristotle said, "Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all." Our program educates the heart.
It's already been recognized by pediatricians that students start experiencing prejudice and bias at a young age. The question educators need to ask is what tools are we giving students to empower them to value themselves and each other?
When students experience discrimination it can have a profound impact. According to the Anna Freud National Center for Children & Families, it can have, "Detrimental effect on their mental health, their self-esteem, and their educational performance."
Our program is simple and powerful. Teachers can use it to inspire students to be themselves and value each other. We have built partnerships with teachers to empower them to embrace the program, teach the students the song, discuss its meaning, engage the students to write about the impact. Most important we encourage them to make it a part of the student's education throughout the year.
We are giving students and this generation a tool to empower themselves to be who they are and be accountable to each other. If a person witnesses an individual discriminating someone just recite these powerful lines of the song, "Are you greater than the sun/ that shines on everyone: Black, Brown, Yellow, Red and White/ we all see the stars, the sun does not discriminate. There is no judgment, it empowers the person to do the right thing.
The song can all empower everyone, especially those who have low self-esteem to value themselves through this line in the song, "The sun shines on everyone."
- Actively minimize human and algorithmic biases, particularly in healthcare, education, and workplace settings.
The challenge is overcoming racism. No one is born with it, it's learned. Singing Equality across America and around the World helps people become more self-aware to let go of racism and plants seeds of equality. It can cultivate a mindset of valuing differences and a culture where everyone feels like they belong.
See video of 800 children sing the song http://worldunityinc.org/asset...
"One
day the world will hear the song and it will stop discrimination," a student who felt the power of the song.
Technology is a powerful tool giving access to our program to inspire the world.
- Growth: An organization with an established product, service, or business model rolled out in one or, ideally, several communities, which is poised for further growth.
Singing Equality across America and around the World has been embraced by teacher in the public school in Malden, Mass, Manchester NH and charter school in DC. Comments from students in Malden:
Kevin, "I feel inspired when sing this song."
VH, "When I sing this song I feel like I can do anything.|
We need to build more awareness for the program to grow it, reach more schools and inspire.
Mayor Christenson of Malden, Mass learned performed it with students from his community at World Unity Inc.'s 23rd annual D&I leadership gala. In his remarks he thanked us for bringing our program to his community, it made an impact on him, the school and the city. The only negative was he cannot get the song out of his head. Imagine if this could happen to all people especially educators. Imagine the impact it could have on communities across the globe!
- A new business model or process that relies on technology to be successful
Our country has never addressed the root cause of prejudice and bias - a mindset by the founders of our nation that those who did not look like them were not their equals. Since the day the nation was founded Native Americans, women, Black, Asians, Latinos, Gays, transgender, mentally and physically challenged people were not seen as equals. These groups are still seeking equity, diversity and inclusion.
Unfortunately, laws and policies cannot remove racism, prejudice or biases from one’s mind or heart. We must do it ourselves. This requires a practice of self-reflection. The place for change starts within each of us. This has not been recognized as a vital focus to overcome racism
Singing Equality across America and Around the World has a song engaging the individual to looking within. The verse asks the question are you greater than the sun that shines on everyone.., invites self-reflection and can be a catalyst to transform the heart and mind. We cannot remove our biases if we are not willing to confront ourselves. This song engenders this process in a non-judgmental way. When we let go of our biases we will grow personally and professionally impacting our workplace, community and the world.
The song is timeless, universal, empowering and transformative. It can be translated into other languages There is no song that promotes self-reflection to overcome racism and speaks the truth of equality. It can inspire us to be as great as the sun and dare to shine on everyone.

Our program has been serving students in at the Ferrway school in Malden Mass. which is around 600 students and students.
With the pandemic and the limitations she has taught 150.
At the Park Middle school in Manchester NH the teacher taught around since 750+ since 2015. However due to the pandemic this year she's only been able to teach 45 students.
We also gave the Shining Star, Montessori public charter school in DC the approval to have We All See the Stars, their school song. Their student population is 285. This song is part of their school experience.
Tim Russell a band leader has produced the song into an instrumental piece and this year he has been able to work with 450 students.
We were have been working with a teacher at the Newton Public Schools and were hoping to add her to our list of schools we've been working with, unfortunately the school let her go. As soon as she finds another school we hope we can add more students learning the song. hope to increase the number in the year to serve students in the Boston Public schools by 500
Due to the pandemic this year, we do not anticipate we can dramatically increase the numbers.
In five years we hope we will impact 4 million
We're measuring our progress by the impact we make and partnerships we form that result in actions.
Our website offers opportunity for people to connect with us. Recently a leader working with China addressing climate issues reached out to me. He saw the connection between environmental issues and racism. To address both you have to care about humanity, you have to overcome your unconscious biases. We had a great conversation. I shared our vision about having the song performed at the Olympics. He has connections with celebrities and stars and is running it by them.
A band leader in a public school in Manchester, NH is a new partnership established this year. He turned the song into an instrumental piece and presented it to 450 students. He's produced a video with instrumentals and vocals which we hope to share and make an impact on the internet.
Each performance of our song produced into video is making an impact on schools, organizations and social media generating awareness for our program and organization.
Our videos have inspired other schools to perform the song. The video of 429 students was posted on Vimeo inspired 800 students in the school district of New Haven to sing the song and perform the verse in sign language: http://worldunityinc.org/asset...
Recently within 5 weeks 44 digital billboards across 26 states were donated to promote the Sun poem, the heart of the song.

It's bring awareness to WUI who is promoting Singing Equality across America and around the World.
- Nonprofit
President, myself working full time
Vice president and IT head part-time
Eleven board members and 21 advisors who serve in advisory capacity.
We also have 8 volunteers who have staffed our annual diversity and inclusion leadership gala for the past 23 years.
I'm very aware of the value and power of our program because the Sun poem is the heart of the song - Are you greater than the sun/that shines on everyone: Black, Brown, Yellow, Red and White/the sun does not discriminate. (c) 1985. This poem was written in my journal in 1978. It is what led me into the work of equality, diversity and inclusion. It has a rich history that's demonstrated its impact. Since 1987 I've presented it in diversity and inclusion workshops I've designed that included the entire force of 6 police departments.
The Sun poem inspired the founding of World Unity Inc.in 1993. Over time our mission evolved to a global vision. I recognized the need to plant Singing Equality across America and Around and the Sun poem in the world.
Our initiative is innovative, universal and transformative. It's easily accessible to everyone and is free!
I understand the barriers and what's needed to overcome them.
My Vice President and IT person is African American. His expertise in IT and re-designing our website has gives us a great platform to share our initiatives, tools and vision. Our diverse board that include leaders from large corporate companies gives credibility and value.
There is need for our program because all people have unconscious biases which operates 24/7. Who has a tool proven to teach open mindedness, humility and forgiveness? These are the essential qualities we need to cultivate to overcome prejudice. We have the tool that can do it.
We believe as we build a diverse, equitable and inclusive board the following qualities are critical:
- Stay true to the mission
- Being self-aware and confronting one's own conscious biases
- Develop the ability to listen to seek understanding, and the truth
- Cultivate an open mindset, empathy and patience
- Build consensus
- Be accountable
When these qualities are cultivated it will naturally lead to a diverse and inclusive board. Equality, diversity and inclusion starts within the person first, you cannot create it on the outside first.
The leader helps set the tone to empowers others to be themselves.
I've always been myself and speak from my heart, creating an environment where we have genuine conversations and people are themselves. I've gotten to know individuals, stay focused on their positive attributes and contribution to the organization.
Our officer and board members are diverse. We are understand it's okay to have discussions where we disagree. However, we agree in the end we must come together and be united not divided. In 27 years we've had some challenging times, however we have always worked them out.
We are mindful if we need to bring more diverse leaders to the board to do so. All board members are engaged in the process to make any recommendations for a potential candidate.
Building a successful diverse, equitable and inclusive board is the result of the open mindset, self-awareness and heart each person brings to the organization. It takes patience, understanding of each other and staying true to our mission
- Organizations (B2B)
I was strongly recommended by a member to apply. Appreciate the support more importantly I am applying because the issue of racism and all forms of discrimination is a global challenge. In order to over overcome it we have to transform the mind. We need to promote self-awareness and contemplation. Laws and policies cannot remove racism, prejudice, bias, unconscious bias and all forms of discrimination from an individual. The individual must remove these vices.
Einstein one said, "You cannot solve a problem with the same consciousness that created it. You must stand on a higher ground." And Dr. King recognized we can pass all the laws we want, we cannot legislate the heart. World Unity Inc.'s program, Singing Equality across America and around the World speaks to the mind and the heart and can transform it. It can engender open mindedness, humility and forgiveness. They need to be cultivated to embrace diversity and inclusion. Individuals have shared stories of how the poem transformed them to experience these qualities.
Technology can help us scale up and reach more people with our program. We even have a video of the song in sign language to include the deaf community. There may be communities that don't have any internet at all or limited access. There may be people who don't have a personal computer and don't even know the program exist.
We can imagine the song being heard around the world, we just need technology to help us ignite it across the globe!
- Business model (e.g. product-market fit, strategy & development)
- Public Relations (e.g. branding/marketing strategy, social and global media)
- Product / Service Distribution (e.g. expanding client base)
World Unity Inc. is a non-profit with whose mission is to promote equality, diversity and inclusion by raising self-awareness through the arts, education and innovative ideas. I believe we have a powerful message that has inspired an innovative idea to use a song to transform hearts and minds.
Marketing
We need a powerful marketing plan to ignite the world with our song! We need a great venue to impact the world with our song. For example, I envision children singing the song led by a super star at the Olympics, the World Cup or the Super Bowl. If the song was performed at any one of these venues it would bring awareness to World Unity, our program and boost donations! We have an extraordinary story to tell and gift to give to the world that can heal and bring unity.
In order to transform the consciousness of humanity it requires the same technique that created the problem, repetition. We need to promote our message and program all over social media. Our song is timeless, universal and transformative. It can heal and empower. It can easily be translated into different languages of the world.
Business
As a non-profit we are driven by a mission and depend on sponsorships, individuals donations, grants and growing the funds we have. We welcome the assistance to develop a model that can generate funds we may not be aware of.
Product/Service Distribution
We welcome assistance in expanding the distribution of our program to a wider audience.
We welcome the opportunity to partner up with MIT. We believe with your commitment to diversity and inclusion, your leaders and expertise in technology you can help us elevate our program to a higher level nationally and globally.
I'm passionate about creating a world that values people. Our program Singing Equality across America and around the World can do this! http://worldunityinc.org/asset...
Our program has proven to empower and transform. The evidence is in students' comments. They love the song so much they taught their siblings. When a teacher at the Ferrway school in Malden began to teach the younger students the song she said many of them already knew the song from their brother or sister teaching them! One student's powerful statement, "One day the world will hear the song and it will stop discrimination. This is how powerful she felt the song is and the impact it could have on the world!
We'd love to have our song sung by children led by a super star and partner up with:
- Olympic Committee
- FIFA World Cup
- FIFA's Women World Cup
- Super Bowl
- Academy Awards
We welcome the opportunity to partner with the Boston Pops and have the song performed at the:
- Fourth of July
We'd love to have Boston Symphony orchestra perform the instrumental version at a concert.
We welcome the opportunity to partner with the Boston Children's Choir to sing the song.
Our program needs to be shared with the world, we need the biggest venue to do it!

World Unity Inc. qualifies because in 2020 fifty mayors and 23 local official declared racism a public health crisis. We're addressing the root cause of racism and all forms of discrimination. Einstein once said, 'You cannot solve a problem with the same consciousness that created it. You must stand on a higher ground." We have the program that is transformative and touches the consciousness.
As an Asian American woman who grew up in an all white environment I know the impact it can have when you don't feel like you belong.
I know the work to overcome racism must starts within. I had to face my own biases and prejudice. The Sun poem led me into the work of promoting equality and is the inspiration for the founding of World Unity Inc.'s mission to promote equality, diversity and inclusion by raising self-awareness through the Sun poem and empowering individuals through the arts, education and innovative ideas. To overcome racism individuals confront their conscious and unconscious biases.
We would use the funds to seek a creative person, knowledgeable about social media work with us to create a powerful marketing plan to ignite the world about World Unity Inc. We have an extraordinary to tell and a gift for the world to heal and bring unity.
We'd also use the funds to strengthen and enhance our website to have a dynamic presence on the internet, make it unforgettable, inspire people to share to help us plant the song in the world!

As an Asian American I understand what it feels like to be the only one and the impact it can have on a person's sense of belonging, being valued and heard, especially in finding one's voice.
I have been dedicated to promoting equality, diversity and inclusion since 1985 and my passion led to the founding of World Unity Inc. in 1993. The mission of the organization is to promote equality, diversity and inclusion by raising self-awareness through the Sun poem and empowering individuals through the art, education and innovative ideas.
The Sun poem is the inspiration for the founding the organization and our initiatives. It has been produced into a PSA and inspired a program, Singing Equality across America and Around the World. You can view the PSA:http://worldunityinc.org/asset...
Video of children singing song:http://worldunityinc.org/asset...
Both are digitally available and can easily be available to educators and students. I have seen the impact the PSA and program has made. I have received great feedback from teachers who have embraced the program Singing Equality across America and around the World, the impact it made on them and their students. I have an understanding of the value our tools have for professional development for teachers and the education of the student.
We would use the prize money to develop strong marketing and PR plan to reach the thousands of schools that don't even know the program exist and especially find ways to connect with schools that are looking for tools to promote equity.

I've been dedicated to promoting equality, diversity and inclusion since 1985 before it became popular and valued as a business imperative. Now it's essential to the health, social, and economic well being of our nation and the world. I've overcome tremendous adversity, understand the inner strength it takes to persevere and not quit. We've had challenges internally however, we've always worked through them, became stronger and wiser. We started with nothing except a poem. We've raised funds annually and we've never had a financial crisis.
I wrote the Sun poem which inspired the program and the founding of WUI. I've always made sure we had a diverse board that included people from diverse industries. We've always sought to build relationships, promote understanding and unity. We've always been willing to reach out to organizations.
I've never waivered in understanding valuing diversity and inclusion begins within.
We'd use funds to:

Advancing inclusion, digital literacy and economic opportunity in communities across the US and globally starts with a mindset. You cannot expect to solve the problem the same mindset that created it. We must cultivate a mindset of valuing diversity and inclusion. This work begins on the inside. Individuals must be willing to confront themselves and face their conscious our unconscious biases. All people have it. It's the human conditioning. Those in leadership role must especially do this internal work to ensure it is not impacting policies and implementation of programs and initiatives.
Einstein once said, "You cannot solve a problem with the same consciousness that created it. You must stand on a higher ground." And Dr. King recognized we can pass all the laws we want, we cannot legislate the heart. The Sun poem which is the heart of our song can open the mind and heart and empower individuals to become more self-aware of their conscious or unconscious bias.
The more diverse and inclusive the mindset the more effective you will be in advancing inclusion, digital literacy and economic opportunity. Individuals must be willing to step out of their comfort zone. Our program can be a catalyst to help do it in a non-judgmental way. It can also empower those who have felt marginalized and excluded. The program can lift a person's confidence and sense of self. Everyone benefits from using our program, the individual, the organization and the community. Our program is timeless, universal and transformative.

World Unity Inc. qualifies because I am an Asian American woman leading the organization. We're addressing the root cause of racism and all forms of discrimination which includes sexism. Einstein once said, 'You cannot solve a problem with the same consciousness that created it. You must stand on a higher ground." We have the program that's transformative and touches the consciousness.
As an Asian American woman who grew up when the only career opportunities were teacher, nurse or secretary I know what it feels like to have no path open to grow your talents and have experienced the oppression by men.
I know the work to overcome racism and sexism must starts within. I had to face my own biases and prejudice. Data science, artificial intelligence, and/or machine learning can benefit humanity to the degree we have developed our self-awareness and love for humanity. All humans have conscious and unconscious bias. A brilliant mind does not free us of this. It is the human conditioning. What are individuals in the field of AI doing to overcome their conscious biases and unconscious biases to ensure that is not built into AI? Are they comfortable to admit they have them?
Aristotle once said, educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all. What are we doing to ensure people are staying connected to their humanity and a moral compass is guiding them to do the right thing? Money, power and ego are strong forces operating all the time. What messages or tools are we giving people to root them in their humanity? Humanity is bigger than race, gender, sexual orientation, class, religion, non-religion, political party, all these identities we have. Which identity are we rooted in first, which do we lead with?
The Sun poem has helped me stay rooted in my humanity - Are you greater than the sun/that shines on everyone: Black, Brown, Yellow, Red and White/the sun does not discriminate (c) 1985 Sara Ting

What a wonderful seed we planted that will be there to guide him as the Mayor!
I have stayed true to World Unity Inc.'s mission and have not taken any easy road. For the first ten years I did not receive a salary. The funds I receive now is a stipend. I have not been driven by money, it's the mission and my love for humanity, love for our country and the world. I do not believe we were put on earth to destroy one and other or just to build wealth and fame. I believe each of us came into the world with a purpose. It is up to us to discover it and pursue it with all of our heart, when we do the positive forces in the universe will support us.
