Pro-viden is a real-time monitoring system of water quality, which allows the aquaculture farm to prevent diseases and increase his production. It consists of a device that moves autonomously throughout the water while it performs measurements of pH, oxygen and other parameters. The farmer can see this information, remotely and at all times, through our web platform and app, and connect the farm’s infrastructure to our system to achieve a full automation and maintain the optimal conditions for the health of the organisms.
When water quality variations are not immediately detected and corrected, aquaculture organisms get stressed and their immune system weakens. This allows for bacteria, fungi and viruses in the water to infect them and create diseases. When water conditions continue to be inadequate, then they begin to die. These production losses in aquaculture amount to 6 billion USD each year, and for a farmer it can represent from 30% of its entire production to all of it in extreme cases.
Moreover, if water quality is not being monitored, coastal communities and ecosystems can be affected by a poor aquaculture production.
We integrate IoT and AI in Pro-viden, in order to provide the aquaculture farmer with an early detection of water variations, so that they can be corrected and so that diseases can be prevented.
Our device integrates water quality sensors, which continuously perform measurements, while it moves autonomously throughout the water. It does this through a propeller-powered system. The device can also move its sensors up and down, so that the measurements can be performed at different depths. In this way, every spot of the water can be monitored and risks to the aquaculture production can be immediately detected.
The measurements are stored in our database and analyzed by our machine learning-powered predictive models. The farmer can see the processed information, remotely and at all times, through our web platform and our mobile application. He can see the current information, graphs, detailed reports and receive preventive alerts whenever a risk is detected. Additionally the infrastructure of the farm can be connected to our system to completely automate the production.
We are focused on helping aquaculture farmers in Latin America. Initially, our target are the more than 12,000 aquaculture farms in Mexico and Chile.
Aquaculture farmers, their workers and their families are directly affected by these production losses, since they put their livelihood at risk.
Regulations are ever more strict with aquaculture farms and we are helping the farmers measure and reduce their impact to the environment, so that the aquatic ecosystems are not changed.
- Provide scalable and verifiable monitoring and data collection to track ecosystem conditions, such as biodiversity, carbon stocks, or productivity.
By optimizing aquaculture production, we allow the farmers to reduce the inputs and outputs they release to the environment. Additionally, we're able to measure the quality of the water bodies where they produce and pass on this information to the government. Thus, we make sure that the impact on the environment and the communities is minimized.
- Pilot: An organization deploying a tested product, service, or business model in at least one community.
We are pilot testing our solution in farms in three Mexican cities; Teacapán, Sinaloa; Linares, Nuevo León; and Chanilama, Colima.
30 people are testing it and more than 2,000 are being impacted by it.
- A new application of an existing technology
We filed an international application for a utility model PCT/MX2019/050014, because of the three innovations in our system: the autonomous movement and the sensor immersion module to perform measurements at different depths. Additionally our software also allows the farmer to receive information that is processed by our AI. In this way, he can receive clear and direct information in the form of graphs and detailed reports. Furthermore, we store all measurements performed by our devices, so that in a few years we can offer the data and help organizations improve strategies performed in aquaculture and all water bodies.
We obtain representative data of all the water, unlike current systems, which are installed in one point and remain static. This enables our system to detect variations from one point to another and immediately alert the farmer and everyone involved of any risks.

We currently serve 27 aquaculture farmers and workers in the 4 farms we are present.
In one year, we will be present in 20 farms, serving 135 people.
In five years, we will be present in 11,000 farms, serving over 74,000 aquaculture farmers and workers.
Our impact metrics: # of aquaculture farms with Pro-viden, % increase in production, preventive alerts sent, # of data points collected, # of devices being used, # of water bodies monitored and # of organizations using the collected data.
- For-profit, including B-Corp or similar models
4 people full-time and 2 people part-time
Three factors make us successful at this: our team, our motivation and our way of working. We are a young, diverse and multidisciplinary team with experienced mentors and allies in all areas of business, from Marine Biology to Marketing to Hardware development. We have a real motivation to improve the aquaculture industry and the lives of everyone involved in the industry, including the final customer. Additionally, we know that in order to be successful we have to work closely with the customer, including them in every step of development.
We currently work with university students to help them develop their skills, while they also nurture our work with their habilities and initiative.
We constantly seek to speak to experts in Latin America, North America, Europe and Asia, in order to understand their way of thinking and build a better one together.
- Organizations (B2B)
We are working to protect, strengthen and boost aquaculture farms in all of Latin America and the world. We know that we are working for something bigger than ourselves and we want to share it with the world, so that with the networking, mentoring and exposure of this challenge we can take Pro-viden to the next level and transform the aquaculture industry and the other water industries, as well.
- Financial (e.g. improving accounting practices, pitching to investors)
- Product / Service Distribution (e.g. expanding client base)
- Technology (e.g. software or hardware, web development/design, data analysis, etc.)
We are looking to increase our client base in Latin America and North America, with the goal of reaching our break-even point.
Regarding the technology, we are constantly improving our software and hardware and we would like to network to makers and makerspaces to find the best solutions.
Regarding financials we want to connect to aquaculture- and water-related investors.
We plan to partner with aquaculture installations suppliers, so that our device is installed along with the infrastructure. We will also partner with feed companies, such as Purina, which can improve their formula with the information we collect.
Finally, we want to partner with NGO's and government organizations to understand their needs and provide the best water quality data they need.

We are working to preserve aquatic ecosystems in the world and make them resilient to changes in the environment, by providing the most relevant and current data about them to all organizations that can protect them.
The funding would allow us to boost our first sales and reach 10 clients and reach our break-even point. On the tech side, it would allow us to develop and launch the second version of Pro-viden, improving the predictive models, the autonomous movement of the device and the sensor-immersion system to perform measurements at different depths.
Finally, we will be able to launch or online database of water quality measurements and open it to interested organizations.

We are working to protect, strengthen and boost aquaculture farms in all of the world. Through this effort, we seek to reduce and prevent overfishing from happening all over the world.
We are also working to monitor the water quality changes that are happening in water bodies, such as coastal areas, the ocean, lakes and rivers. In this way, we want to help understand the consequences of our actions, such as overfishing, and address these issues in an optimal way.
