About 63% of environmental pollution in Akwa Ibom State is caused by poor palm oil production processes. This pollution had caused approximate $1million Dollars losses in farm products annually within Akwa Ibom State and contributed to severe-hunger and malnutrition affecting three (3) million people in Akwa Ibom State and in 120million people in Nigeria.

But palm oil production is a lucrative business with good return on investment in our region due to large available raw materials and massive usages; engulfed with thousands of local producers and small scale businesses but they are facing challenges of poor processing, packaging and marketing facilities.

The excessive use of firewood and high carbon emitted processing machines in production processes as well as uncontrollable discharged of wastes such as Empty Fruit Bunches (EFB), Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME), spikelets, etc. to open lands and waterways released high concentrate of carbon dioxide, methane gas, hydrogen sulfide, residual oil, grease, etc to soil, water and air which caused biodiversity loss, soil degradation, eutrophication and global warming leading to dead of fishes, animals and poor crops productivity resulting to high food insecurity in the region.
