Entomo Farm
Entomo Farm will address the ever increasing feed prices, the lack of a more sustainable protein alternative in (especially) low and middle earning communities.
We are proposing the farming of insects to provide an affordable, high quality protein alternative for feed, fertilizer and food snacks.
Our solution will positively change lives, and therefor support SDG's 1,2 and of No Poverty, Zero Hunger and Good Health and Wellbeing. By taking it to scale, the use of our affordable protein alternative will help small and medium scale farmers of fish, pigs, crops and vegetable to continue producing their crops and create employment for others and positively impact their communities and economies.
As our product is organic, with the use of house hold kitchen waste as the main raw ingredient, we will also be able to reduce on the carbon emissions in the environment-making our solution good for the environment
The lack of a more sustainable and nutritious form of feed and nutritious food in Zambia, is seeing an increase in undernourished families/communities and stunted growth rates in children at 40%; which is greater than the developing country average of 25%. Additionally, the ever-increasing landfills are a cause for concerning and harmful to the environment.
The purpose of the Entomo Farm is to produce a sustainable, organic and affordable feed, fertilizer and food snacks option by farming insects.
This method of farming will not only help us access and afford organic and sustainable food options, it will also bring about a reduction in household organic waste and reduce on the waste landfills in and around our communities that are causing harm to the environment through the emission of Green House Gases.
Our processes will include
- Collection and sorting of waste and Breeding of larvae
- Harvesting
- Production/Processing
- Product Delivery
- Sales
We would like our process to be tech enabled in order to have a controlled breeding environment so that we can have a consistent and quality product.
Temperature, humidity and packaging are some of the processes we would like to be tech enabled
Our target market is small and medium scale farmers, distributors and clients. This will assist them to continue to be able to produce their crop and livestock organically and affordably while still being able to earn a living as well as contribute positively to the growth of our economy.
In order to understand their needs (esp the farmers) we are engaging them, through surveys to find how they are managing to feed their livestock, if the can afford the current prices and if they are open to capacity building and organic farming practices
- Create scalable economic opportunities for local communities, including fishing, timber, tourism, and regenerative agriculture, that are aligned with thriving and biodiverse ecosystems
Edible insects are nor new to the country and continent. However, the choice of insect is. We are therefore looking to sensitize people on the benefits of our products through various marketing strategies and community outreach. To this end, we would like to work with the relevant government ministries and stakeholders in our country in order to reach our target market in order to begin teaching them about or product.
