Mindset View
Most of our youths find themselves in bad companies, drugs, and immoral activities at a very tender age. Nyatike area, Migori County in Kenya has 80% of youth drop out of school as a result of low self-esteem and underestimation.
Covid-19, therefore, has worsened the curve and today many young girls and boys are becoming maturing school dropouts and slowly joining the high-level illiterate community.
These have been fueled by a lack of awareness and proper mental shaping programs that are able to translate the negative view of the personality into a model that stands for change and self-development.
Mindset View aims to create awareness and campaign one to research and document many other nitty-gritty issues that contribute to a high level of school drop out especially among girls. Two is to conduct mentorship and mental health workshops to educate young girls on the importance of developing self-esteem and confidence.
Mindset is one of the most powerful controls of life. However, young teenagers get it difficult to identify the better side of mindset, therefore they fall into unforeseen traps such as drug addiction, early pregnancies, immoralities, early marriages, and school dropout. It is a fact that 80% of the teenagers (young girls and boys) in Nyatike are below standard eight graduates, this later translates into a very high dependency ratio.
However, they do not get into such situations as a way or mode of living standards but as a result of limited awareness, low self-esteem, community influenced patterns, and peer influence.
Mindset View program is a community-based approach that seeks to link teenagers to potential mentors through workshops and seminars during which young girls can be taught how to value themselves and to develop positive self-esteem on their abilities. To achieve this we shall research and document all possible cases or reasons that contribute to the high level of school dropouts and finally use the sourced data to mitigate some of the undefined problems. Towards this move, we seek to use technology in data collection, documentary, and solving problems. Audiovisuals, infographics, animations will be used to pass information and message to target beneficiaries.
The productive and economical group of the society is the youth. The only way to improve the community is through empowering the youth with relevant tools such as education. We are very concerned with the rate at which young girls and boys drop out of school and get involved in criminal and non-sustainable activities such as early pregnancies, early marriages, and drug abuse. Young girls and boys of age bracket 10-25 are undergoing what is known as "Local Lifestyle" which means they tend to live and prototype the lifestyle that was lived 100 decades ago. This would mean education is a luxury item for them. This stands out due to the fact that youths do not understand their value in the society where they live. They have developed a mindset that drags them behind. We seek to run a program known as MINDSET VIEW which aims at identifying the affected youths, research and document other key contributors to their problem through a process which is for them, with them, by them. The program seeks to link affected youths with relevant motivational speakers, mental health practitioners, and mentors through webinars and workshops.
- Enable access to quality learning experiences in low-connectivity settings—including imaginative play, collaborative projects, and hands-on experiments.
Our solution is aligned to the problem in the following aspects: 1. We are seeking to create an enabling environment for young girls that promotes their learning. 2. We seek to research and document factors/challenges that lead to imbalanced learning opportunities among the youths. 3. We seek to learn different tools and approaches that can be used to bring more youths to literacy world.
- Pilot: An organization deploying a tested product, service, or business model in at least one community.
Our project is at the Pilot phase and we are working with the Nyatike community to understand challenges that contribute to low penetration of education.
- A new business model or process that relies on technology to be successful
My solution is more replicable and can be used to develop other use cases in other regions with close similarities. The problem and solutions can be used to design technologies or applications that can support the learning process.
