Equitable classroom at your doorsteps.
Economies of nations across the world are at the risk of total collapse because their ageing skilled work-force will become irreplaceable in the next couple of decades ahead due to increasing percentage of out-of-school children and adolescents. The aforesaid is true in the face of COVID-19 global pandemic, natural disasters and war. Current efforts to deploy internet-based online learning alternative for many out-of-school children still face several challenges like poor connectivity to no internet access especially in remote communities. Refugee camps and remote communities harbour freighting number of children and adolescents who still do not have the privilege to access equitable, safe and quality classroom. Every disadvantage child will turn out to become a radical and a menace to society eventually. Classroom at your doorsteps is meant to bring equitable, safe and qualitative learning to the home of every underprivileged child.
Over 2000 children between the ages 5 and 12 who lost their parents as a result of terrorism in North-Eastern Nigeria found their ways to the internationally displaced persons' camp in UHOGUA community near Benin city, Edo state Nigeria. This facility is currently being run by a Missionary organization with the support of other NGOs, government and some concerned individuals. Many of these out of school-age children began to crave the desire of becoming graduates few years after their arrival. This desire arose from their exposure to television and radio stations which gave them some levels of enlightenment. To this end, our company deployed this prototype in the form of experimental make-shift learning units fitted with COVID-19 prevention kits and made available a full compliment of volunteer teachers in all subject areas on a call-on-call-off basis to engage these children in spite of the remoteness of this location. Prior to commencement, we profiled them, categorized them and ran a need assessment on them to determine the most effective approach and outstanding results were achieved. Worthy of note also, is the fact that less than 20% of children in refugee camps across the globe barely attain tertiary education due to several restrictions.
This solution is a community based outreach model that deploys the full compliment of an ideal classroom to out of school-age children who could not have access to formal school classroom learning due to the restrictions placed on them by COVID-19, effects of war and other natural disasters. It's in the form of learning tents equipped with medical facilities and instructional teaching materials and learning aids. A replica of this prototype will be made available in every one kilometer radius within targetedt communities no matter how remote they are. This will be as well deployed to refugee camps. The step-by-step process is: 1. Every child would be profiled and their details captured. Thereafter, 2. A Categorization by age, gender, religion, parental background, family history, interests, ability to read and write, operate a computer and use of the internet will be done. 3. A Need assessment would be carried out to help overcome inherent deficiciences. 4. Design the most productive approach to engage every child. 5. Make an after school follow-up and feedback plan. 6. Research and development. 7. Carryout monthly evaluation and performance.
This solution seeks to offer unrestricted learning to children in refugee camps and remote communities where there are no schools and internet connections. These children have become so disadvantaged by their present circumstances ranging from poverty, hunder, religious beliefs, gender inequality, overcrowding for instance in refugee camps, remoteness of some of their current locations which are distances away from city centers, poor educational background of their parents. To appreciate what the equitable classroom needs of these children are, we embarked on several appraisal visits to to enlighten them about the benefits using videos, sometimes translated into their local languages. This helped to determine the most effective and productive approaches to tackle the problem. The solution will help to bring equal and equitable standard of learning to their doorsteps commensurate with that being enjoyed by their peers from rich backgrounds and in city centers.
- Increase the engagement of learners in remote, hybrid, and physical environments, including strategies and tools for parental support, peer interaction, and guided independent work.
To provide equitable classroom for every child who is currently out of school due to COVID-19 irrespective of their location. The targeted population is over 50 million and the solution is expected to cut across every community. This solution is cost effective and it will eliminated all bottlenecks associated with online engagement of young learners by their teachers. No more connectivity problems, children no longer need to grapple with the challenges of operating a computer or tablets. Feedbacks on take home assignments will become seamless. It will afford teachers, students and their parents to work together effectively as a team.
- Prototype: A venture or organization building and testing its product, service, or business model.
This stage of development is evolving and subject to additional modifications based on feedbacks from students, parents and teachers. It is also bracing forth to overcome contemporary challenges wherever it is deployed to in any part of the world.
- A new application of an existing technology
Yes, my solution is innovative because it is a re-engineering of the formal classroom model and online learning methods which already hasve a lot of setbacks, and are now almost inoperable and counter-productive in the face of COVID-19 pandemic and other crisis situations. Note that since the beginning of 2020, several millions of school aged children and adolescents across the globe have been out of school. The situation even became worse since the advent of a number of COVID-19 variant. Even though many governments and school authorities resorted to the use of online learning platforms, the deliverables have fallen short of meaningful impacts on the lives of these vulnerable children including the vast majority in refugee camps and remote villages that do not have internet connectivity. Taking equitable classroom to the doorsteps of out of school children via a community-by-community based approach will capture the disadvantaged who hitherto could not access online learning technology because of their locations, poverty and other limiting circumstances. This innovation is a must-reach by every child to access quality, safe and equitable classroom at least around one kilometer radius within their community.
