Elimu rights: Online learning campaign
Every child has a right to quality Education. This right has been enshrined in the ICHPR. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought with it learning challenges for poor students all over the country (Kenya) and especially those in the marginalized areas such as Turkana, Isiolo, Marsabit and Mandera who do not have access to learning materials and technology. I propose an online learning app for students all over the country at a subscription but that offers free services for students from marginalized communities. To these poor students, free services as well as learning material will be provided.
By encouraging university and college students to enroll in the app as tutors in subjects they are well versed in as well as provide their teaching and mentorship services at a small fee, we will be able to solve not only the problem of lack of access to safe quality education for poor students but also that of unemployment for the youth.
If scaled globally, this project could facilitate and make easier processes such as international college applications, learning new languages, creating jobs and providing quality education for poor students from all over the world.
I aim at solving the problem of lack of access to quality education. Even without the looming pandemic, the students from these marginalized communities do not get access to quality education. Due to the harsh living conditions in these areas, good teachers shy away from teaching in such places. This leads to a gap in the quality of education that these kids get access to. This problem is global. Students from cities such as Bagdhad, Nepal, Karachi, Tehran, Lome, Tashkent, Abidjan, Ashgabat, Harare, Dhaka and many others will also benefit from this project if scaled globally.
According to a research carried out by UNESCO, 171 Million people could be lifted out of poverty if provided with basic reading skills. Furthermore, 50 million children living in conflict infested states are unable to attend school.
With this app, this gap between rich students and poor students will be filled and the problem of poverty solved to a large extent. These poor students will be able to access good teachers and good resources regardless of the distance and their living conditions. They will be better placed to access information, education and learning opportunities.
This app will be called "Elimu rights" which simply translates to "Education rights". It will provide an interface where learning resources for different subjects are made available online for students. Once a student has successfully registered, they will be able to access these resources as well as attend virtual classes depending on their schedule.
For students from marginalized areas, these resources will be free and downloadable so that they are accessible even when offline. If a student cannot attend a virtual class due to connectivity issues, the recording of the class will be shared with them and an interface provided where they can ask the tutor questions on areas they did not understand.
The technologies that will be used include virtual learning environments, presentation and multimedia technologies, mobile technology, social networking tools as well as assistive technologies.
The target population is poor students from marginalized areas of Kenya and the aim is to provide them with safe and quality education that will enable them to fight the problem of poverty in their societies.
Currently, these children access low quality education and have minimum resources to help them achieve greatness. Some of them are unable to attend school and as such do not access education at all. This project will help solve this problem.
- Increase the engagement of learners in remote, hybrid, and physical environments, including strategies and tools for parental support, peer interaction, and guided independent work.
This project aligns with the equitable classrooms challenge such that it will be able to provide safe, accessible and quality education for all students in Kenya regardless of their locations and economic backgrounds. It will also provide a learning chance even for students in areas with low-connectivity issues as well as increase engagement of students from poor communities.
- Concept: An idea being explored for its feasibility to build a product, service, or business model based on that idea.
This is an idea I have been working on and believe it can make a great impact to the community. With your help, I hope to realize this idea and make it a success.
- A new business model or process that relies on technology to be successful
This project is innovative as it allows for students from different backgrounds to all get a chance to get quality education. In this regard, different students from different schools will be able to interact, share ideas and learn from each other all while getting the same quality of education.
It will create a positive impact in this market as parents will want their children to get the knowledge of university students who excelled in those specific areas of study so as to help them excel too. On the other hand, poor students will get to learn for free and sharpen their skills.

The indicators which we will be using to measure our progress are quality education, gender equality and reduced inequalities. By closely following these, we will be able to tell what level our project has reached by the number of goals we have been able to achieve.
- Not registered as any organization
We are currently a team of 5.
We are a team of highly skilled and highly motivated individuals with a penchant for success and love for equality.
With the sills we have developed as students, mentors and future proffesionals, we will act as tutors, mentors and also facilitators of the project.
The team consists of five individuals, all of whom come from different backgrounds and are in different areas of study. The only common thing we have is our goal and aim. We plan to use this to our advantage by incorporating and helping students from different ethnicities and backgrounds just like us.

- Financial (e.g. improving accounting practices, pitching to investors)
- Legal or Regulatory Matters
- Product / Service Distribution (e.g. expanding client base)
- Technology (e.g. software or hardware, web development/design, data analysis, etc.)
In order for this project to become a reality, we would need the support in terms of financial support, legal contracts and regulations, service distribution as well as technology for the poor students who do not have access to technology to facilitate their online learning.
If possible, we would love to partner with organizations such as save the girl foundation, peer connect, the USAID, Amnesty International, CARE International and Red Cross.
The influence they already have in terms of helping needy students can go a long way into helping us achieve our target.
- Yes, I wish to apply for this prize
Even though our project is not a U.S bases project, I believe we have the same goals as those of the ASA prize for equitable Education and therefore qualify for the prize.
