Global Zero illiteracy Alliance
Due to Covid, 100s of millions of kids can't go to school to learn how to read and write and 780 million adults are illiterate. But illiteracy is one of the main risk factors of poverty and hunger, because it leads to low paying physical labor jobs.
By creating a global zero illiteracy alliance that provides an outstanding literacy app, a global awareness campaign to donate millions of used smartphones and delivering the smartphones to those most in need, we want to empower every child and every community to reach its full potential.
The best thing: As our solution costs less than 1 dollar per learner, we can truly scale it up globally to make a significant contribution to help end global hunger and poverty.
Globally, there's over a billion people in need of the most basic education-skill: Literacy. 780 million adults are illiterate and due to Covid, 100million+ children are out-of-school. Many will never return to school. But illiteracy is one of the main risk factors of poverty and hunger, because it leads to low paying physical labor jobs. Let's stop this tragedy!
The main problem is accessibility, affordability and quality of education:
Accessibility: Out-of-school children or illiterate adults would have to commute to school for hours through often times dangerous territory. But many don't have enough time for this commute and to be a full time student as they are required to work and help their parents.
Affordability: Many schools require high fees (direct and hidden), which are prohibitively expensive for low income families.
low quality of education: Big classes of 50+ pupils leave almost no room for 1:1 feedback, but this is crucial to learn! It is extremely hard to learn without feedback, because you don't know your gained knowledge is right.
Six different meta-analysis prove: "most commonly produces large improvements in student learning is pedagogical interventions that match teaching to students’ learning, including through use of computers or technology. (p.14)"
OUR PLAN TO FORM A GLOBAL ZERO ILLITERACY E-LEARNING ALLIANCE:
Our goal of empowering millions can only be scaled globally through very cheap and affordable prices: By using literacy apps on donated used smartphones, we can do this:
We can teach literacy for less than $1 per learner with high affordability, accessibility and quality!
1. App development partner: $0/device
Big tech companies or a big tech alliance could sponsor a high investment into literacy app development to foster corporate responsibility and sustainability efforts. We develop as an open source project if they don't sponsor app development.
2. Awareness campaign partner: $0/device
Celebrities, major global brands and nationwide chain stores can sponsor an awareness campaign urging people to donate used smartphones to foster corporate responsibility. As they already have a big media appearance, no extra costs are created.
3. Checking, installation and distribution of smartphones: $1/device
Foundations, developing countries or foreign aid donors would pay for checking in a processing-site and distribution of smartphones, because they got a free smartphone with a great app from the previous steps and education provides a very high ROI.
Each participant has a high self-motivation in participating, thanks to huge synergies between the partners.
Cost-Calculation: Theory-of-change-answer
Education is a miracle: One year of education has shown to increase yearly incomes by 8-12% per year. But a lot of children and adults are missing out, causing poverty and therefore hunger.
Our overall target group:
- 100s of millions of out-of-school kids: Many will never return to school if we don't act. Let's stop this tragedy!
- 780 million illiterate adults
Our target group segments priorities:
- Our first priority is illiterate adults and youth living in slums because with better education they can get a better job right away in the city where they live to support themselves and their children. (about 20% of people living under 2 dollars a day live in non-rural areas)
- Our second priority is illiterate adults and youth living living near cities because with better education they can get a better job right away in the city nearby to support themselves and their children.
- Our third priority is illiterate adults in rural areas, because with higher education better knowledge of farming and higher productivity in other side-businesses can be acquired to increase income right away.
Further segmentation
We need to start distribution in countries that will cover distribution costs to save funds. As good results are demonstrated, the program will be scaled up globally to more countries.
Why do we target illiterate adults first?
We target illiterate adults first because income increase through education can be realized right away (without waiting to grow up) to better support themselves and their children.
And because children of illiterate adults have a mich higher risk of becoming illiterate themselves. By targeting one adult illiterates, we are creating a great multiplying / spillover effect because they in turn can lift up all their kids and greatly reduce poverty risk of the next generation: Once one adult becomes literate, they can teach their many children, so their children have a much lower chance to be illiterate. They also have an increase of income that they can invest into the education or freeing their children of child labor to support the family. The intergenerational cycle of poverty comes to an end.
- Enable access to quality learning experiences in low-connectivity settings—including imaginative play, collaborative projects, and hands-on experiments.
Your challenge calls for solutions to "Enable access to quality learning experiences in low-connectivity settings—including imaginative play, collaborative projects, and hands-on experiments."
By utilizing donated used smartphones and our plan on how to fund the development of a great literacy app and distribution of the smartphones, we give illiterates both the hardware and software they need to have a high quality learning experience at their fingertips, whenever they want to learn, wherever they want to learn - they can.
- Concept: An idea being explored for its feasibility to build a product, service, or business model based on that idea.
Because our idea is so young and it is difficult to do the app well, as it needs a lot of investment, we do not have a literacy app.
- A new business model or process that relies on technology to be successful
The innovation is the high synergies we create between the partners of the Global Zero illiteracy Alliance. Each participant has a high motivation in participating, thanks to the huge synergies between the partners and the right selection of partners, the cost for each partner is much lower than previous. The innovation is how we economically combine the 3 necessary steps:
1. App development partner: Big tech companies or device manufacturers - $0.0/device
Synergies:
A great way to foster corporate responsibility and sustainability and help millions of people as all parties share costs.
2. Awareness campaign (to urge donation of used smartphones) partner : Major brands and celebrities - $0/device
Synergies:
A great way to foster corporate responsibility and sustainability and do the right thing at no extra costs as they already have a big media appearance and the other partners cover the other costs.
3. Checking, installation and distribution of smartphones Partner: Developing countries: $1/device
Synergies:
Foundations, developing countries or foreign aid donors would pay for checking and distribution of the smartphones, because they got a free smartphone with a great app from the previous steps and education provides a very high ROI.

Right now we have a highly innovative and cost effective solution to scale education globally. But because our solution is so innovative and new, few have heard about it and many of those doubt it is actually possible. But our alliance can only be successful if all alliance partners come together (which is the main reason this alliance has not happened yet), so we need a good network to make it happen!
If we win with your application, these doubts would be greatly reduced because a renowned and highly respected organization like you checked our idea! This in combination with your large network will be of absolutely crucial help to scale this idea globally!
