LANer-eLearning platform
Quality learning is important to prepare students to succeed in the jobs of tomorrow. Yet across the world, a “learning crisis” is unfolding. Globally, enrollment gaps between high and low-income countries have narrowed significantly in basic and secondary education. But the World Bank’s 2018 World Development Report sounded the alarm; students in many communities are not learning basic skills while in school. “Schooling is not the same as learning. Even after several years in school, millions of students lack basic literacy and numeracy skills. Further, in math and science, students in low-income countries perform worse than 95 percent of students in high-income countries.
Uganda is not immune to the problem. Almost half of fifth graders cannot read second grade texts. “In rural Uganda, just under three-quarters of students in grade 3 cannot solve a two-digit subtraction, such as 46 minus 17, and by grade 5, half could still not do so.” In 2009, the last time Uganda participated in the global Program for International Assessment (PISA), it ranked 74 out of 75.
Good quality teachers are expensive and tend to be concentrated in large cities where there are more resources. In March 2017, there was a shortage of half a million teachers and the government recruited untrained teachers at a lower pay grade to fill the gaps. Student teacher ratios are high at 1 teacher to every 35 students. School infrastructure is crumbling, adding to challenges for student learning. In addition, the learning culture is geared toward memorization to pass exams.
The outbreak of COVID-19 has also not just impacted various industries but also school students. Given the government-led advisory for schools to remain shut to protect students from Coronavirus.
LANer hopes to bridge the above learning gaps and help students not only to pass the test, but also to develop a deeper level of understanding of complex math and science subjects while keeping safe through an eLearning platform that offers free access to its complete app to school students.
LANer is an educational technology company that develops highly adaptive, engaging, and effective personalized learning programs for students. Through this innovative eLearning platform, we seek to reinvent how students learn in the age of mobile devices through a combination of world-class teachers, proven pedagogical methods, innovative technology, and data science to deliver personalized learning across grades. Students who pay $150 a year to access maths and science tutorials, and game-based practice tests, to help them master the academic curriculum for years 4-12. The company operates on a “freemium” model, where students can download the app and access some limited content on their phone for a brief period before they need to subscribe to gain full access.
If scale globally, this platform is potential to impact millions of school going children facilitating them to continue to learn whether during pandemic seasons or not.
According to a report by UNESCO, education of over 290 million students across 13 countries will be interrupted because of the COVID-19 crisis. The agency has also suggested that learning platforms will help students access quality education remotely during times like these. With 250 million school-going students in India, it is of paramount importance that their health is protected while also ensuring that their learning does not get interrupted, says the company.
As a result, states as well as individual schools are being cautious and taking precautionary measures. In the wake of the virus, just like in other countries across the world, Ugandan government has ordered all kindergarten schools to remain closed, with just a few governments owned primary schools starting to open. Similarly, in Uganda, all exams till class seventh have been cancelled. Along with schools, the holiday has been declared for all colleges, including professional colleges, till the end of June 2021.
The outbreak of COVID-19 has not just impacted various industries but also school students. Given the government-led advisory for schools to remain shut to protect students from Coronavirus, we are currently developing an online learning app LANer–eLearning app, intended to offer free access to its complete app to school students.

BENEFICIARY CASE SCENARIO:
Joellah (not real name) yearned to learn more. But the vibrant eighth grader, whose arms were malformed since birth, was from the Karamoja Subregion in Uganda, a region that suffers from the greatest poverty, illiteracy, and overpopulation in Uganda. According to Joellah, “Education often ranks very low in a parent’s priority list in the village of Musoto.” While the schools in his village meet the most basic education requirements, he always dreams of studying in a better school.
He father, a farmer, sent Joellah and his four brothers to school in the city, where the quality of education was better. But they could not afford to send their youngest to school. Joellah explains, “In a village where people have to walk 4 to 5 kilometers to get to the nearest hospital, education is a luxury.” Seeing his interest in education, his grandfather invited him to live with his family of ten to attend the Namatala Primary school in Mbale, the biggest City in Eastern Uganda. Joellah lived with them for almost 12 years.
Joellah loved biology and math. Although he was studious, he struggled at school. Joellah’s grandfather heard about “LANer-eLearning app” and gave him the gift of a one-year subscription. The app completely changed the way Joellah viewed complex topics. Joellah said, “It helped me to unlearn and re-learn topics. I never imagined that topics in math could be explained through animation and 3D objects. To me, math was always something that had to be written down and practiced; I rarely understood the basics of any concept. With the LANer– eLearning app, I can visualize problems and see the logic behind each topic. The app eased my learning process. It gave me a new perspective about how loving what one is learning can change a learning journey.”
When he grows up, Joellah hopes to become an Administrative Service Officer, which is the premier civil service in Uganda where positions are highly competitive. He wants to help make education more accessible for children in rural areas. He believes that if children from lower-income families get an equal chance at education and learning, there is a higher chance of them living better lives.
LANer-eLearning app is a product that is intended to play an important role in making children like Joellah’s dream a reality, LANer-eLearning app is aimed at being the stepping stone for millions of such students by making education affordable and accessible across Uganda and East Africa. At LANer, we believe that a level playing field for all students will enable them to learn better.
- Support teachers to adapt their pedagogy, facilitate personalized instruction, and communicate with students and their families in remote and hybrid settings.
Recognizing that people learn in different ways, LANer intends to address the contextual, visual, and theoretical learners through the platform. By blending all three learning dimensions (Content, Media & Technology) into one tool, the product became highly effective because it could impact a broader number of students with different learning styles. To make the product captivating, the platform effectively integrates content, media, and technology. LANer-eLearning app is solving a core challenge in education by providing widespread access to good quality teachers. Through Rockstar teachers that take complex subjects, simplify them, and explain with clarity, we provide everyday examples that students can connect with and the material takes on a more tangible dimension. Students can internalize the information more easily, because it is relevant to them. The content is deconstructed and split into five-minute modules, allowing for alignment with all three curriculum in use in India. The material is brought to life by the media team, which adds special effects, such as two-dimensional objects that move animation and gamification.
- Concept: An idea being explored for its feasibility to build a product, service, or business model based on that idea.
LANER-eLearning app is still undertaking research to find out the potential costs, revenues and profits arising from the product. We are still conducting our SWOT analysis to identify the strengths, weakness opportunities and threats existing in the market even as we continue to refine our idea concept. We are also still designing our market strategy which we believe will help identify our product's target group, which will facilitate segmentation of the product’s market to enables us identify our product niche which will influences most of our marketing decisions.
- A new business model or process that relies on technology to be successful
TOP 3 SUCCESS FACTORS:
At LANer, we are striving to demonstrate that our philosophy, largely differentiated product, and strong sales mechanism can make it possible to bring quality education to millions of students.
1. OUR PHILOSOPHY
LANer’s philosophy toward learning is fundamentally different from the type of studying currently most common in Uganda and East Africa. Education, particularly at the end of grade 8 and into high school, is largely driven by memorization, which is motivated by fear of failing life-changing examinations. Teachers are teaching to the exams.
Students can be robotic, memorizing material as if in a trance, only to regurgitate in on command for the exam and then forget it weeks later. At LANer we’re troubled by this phenomenon and aspired to drive a cultural change to transform how students learn and make it a positive experience. We’re creating a powerful tool to inspire students to learn through a different strategy—learning for the love of learning.
The app helps students gain deeper conceptual clarity of math and science. Once students can form a deeper knowledge base and become good at a subject, they tend to develop the self-confidence that leads to better grades and positions them for the jobs of the future.
2. DIFFERENTIATED PRODUCT
LANer seeks to solve a core challenge in education by providing widespread access to good quality teachers through our “Rockstar” teachers who take complex subjects, simplify them, and explain with clarity. By providing everyday examples that students can connect with, the material takes on a more tangible dimension. Students can internalize the information more easily, because it is relevant to them. The content is deconstructed and split into five-minute modules, allowing for alignment with all three curriculums in use in Uganda. The material is brought to life by the media team, which adds special effects, such as two-dimensional objects that move animation and gamification.
The technology allows for personalization of the experience. The format is conducive to connecting with students and their different learning styles, whether they are contextual, visual, or theoretical learners. Students are periodically tested for mastery of the material. Based on those results, it can help students who need additional reinforcement cover remedial content, and it can provide curious minds access to more advanced levels. The format allows students to learn at their own pace. Blending content, media, and technology has made the tool very effective at keeping students engaged and they are coming back for more.
3. STRONG SALES MECHANISM
The growing presence of the smartphone has created a new delivery channel for education, and it is playing a big role in rapidly expanding access to quality teaching. An app transcends geographic boundaries, since it can be downloaded from anywhere around the globe. This capability makes the tool accessible to students from the largest cities to the most remote parts of Uganda. It democratizes access to education. More than half our target beneficiary students come from outside the major metropolitan areas. The app is set to enable us to continue scaling up into international markets and enter our next phase of growth after some time.

This is just a sample that we are strongly committed to observing and promoting Diversity, Equity and Inclusion not just in words but also in our actions, vision, and mission.
- Individual consumers or stakeholders (B2C)
We are now in the important position of strategizing how we make this model implementable, scalable and replicable. To do this right, we will need more mentors (such as from the distinguished group affiliated with MIT), advisors, and board members. This would need to be complemented with more successful projects in both developing countries and in the developed world.
What Covid-19 has taught the world is that there is an underbelly in each society that is often ignored, when countries are encouraged to pursue the liberal economic model. The World Bank and the IMF may have a lot of answers, but their ability to address issues of endemic poverty is quite limited. Covid 19 has shown how whole segments of society especially the learners have been left behind as a result. It is this group that we hope to target and to serve.
We ideally want help with strategic planning, marketing and communications, as we expand our own vision of what may be possible. We want to build connections with investors and grantors and with experts in the tech field who can help us envision how our project can expand exponentially. We want to explore what other technologies may exist to help us scale up. We also need guidance on how to enhance our branding capability so that the LANer concept can become a household word for every child. Furthermore, LANer;
- requires current philanthropic and monetary support to uplift its operations to recruit the required and needed positions to direct operations;
- requires a supportive network of educational champions and community of peers, collaborators, and experts that could help us in advancing our business model through Solves’ nine-month program;
- team would personally and professionally benefit from the mentorship and strategic advice of Solve and MIT’s networks to better build their capacities in emergency situations;
- would deeply benefit from MIT’s and Solve’s expertise to further develop our user interface which requires a dedicated design and programming effort;
- Solve could also help us develop an impact assessment to advance our monitoring and evaluation framework.
- Human Capital (e.g. sourcing talent, board development, etc.)
- Business model (e.g. product-market fit, strategy & development)
- Financial (e.g. improving accounting practices, pitching to investors)
- Public Relations (e.g. branding/marketing strategy, social and global media)
- Product / Service Distribution (e.g. expanding client base)
- Technology (e.g. software or hardware, web development/design, data analysis, etc.)
We need partnership support in three important areas:
1. To enhance our technology solution so that it is easily accessible to new users in developing and developed countries.
2. to have members from the business community review our model to see how it can align more closely with their philanthropic objectives. This may open the door for us to work closely with corporate foundations.
3. To consult with marketing specialists to see how the idea can be disseminated widely in lower income communities in both the Global South and the Global North. We feel that we have a unique and innovative approach to social change but unless we can disseminate it widely our effectiveness as agents for such change will always be limited. This is where our engagement with MIT’s Solve initiative can be critical to our future.
Furthermore, the following are our partnership goals.
- Business model expertise to assess market positioning and partnership strategy to help it scale its hugely-successful model to millions of users;
- Expert recommendations for practical tools and systems, particularly around affordable and functional accounting systems;
- Strategic marketing support to increase media exposure and build brand recognition; and
- Technical expertise and advice, particularly for user retention and acquisition and technical workflow management.
- Delivery in target geographies
- Content acquisition
- Curriculum enhancement
- Data capturing and analytics support for an offline environment
- Effective company structuring
- Employee onboarding and training
- Effective funding streams
We would like to partner with ArkaSoftwares for the development of app and website and MIT faculty who can help us think through big data, and how to help rural populations (we are huge fans of D-Lab!!!). Other Solve members using elearning platforms to distribute services to last mile populations who need them most. We would also like to partner with is MIT’s Solve Members or MIT faculty who can provide us with an independent review of our technology model, and how it can be made more user-friendly and accessible to groups in various geographies around the world. We feel that we are at a breakthrough point now. The right guidance at this stage can advance our initiative dramatically. We would welcome such guidance to include advice on blockchain technology, and how it could interface and advance our current technology.
We would like to also partner with a company in the for-profit sector that can look at us from a business perspective and advise how we can scale our work in both the Global South and the Global North. Organizations that come to mind are McKinsey Consulting, Accenture, Boston Consulting or similar groups. We feel that we would benefit from a critical business review of our work, and to advise certain strategic approaches that can help us be more effective in the future.
Finally we would like to partner with an advertising or marketing firm that can guide us on effective ways to reach the ultra poor women and girls in remote villages or urban slums who get left out of formal education programs. Some organizations that come to mind are Ogilvy, Leo Burnett BBDO, McCann, MOTTO, or Barker. We would be happy to work with any of these agencies.

Expanding access to quality and affordable education is a central element to eliminating extreme poverty and promoting shared prosperity. In developing countries, private education providers play a critical role in the delivery of education, skills, and training that is affordable and relevant to the needs of the labor markets. Our primary country of implementation, Uganda, has experienced a crippling financial crisis, compounded by the global pandemic and the recent devastating refugee crisis that has rendered more than 1.5 million refugees to seek refuge in Uganda.
COVID-19 has shone a spotlight on the inequities of society, not least of which is access to quality education during this time of disruption. Our learning solutions focus on guided and self-paced learning material that is geared towards sustainability, peaceful coexistence, gender equality and future focused skills.
Our software tools include tablets, computer aided design and 3D rendering programs with the intention of building a training program for CAD operators, architecture and engineering skills, along with a wealth of other programs to enable offline learning for instance the use of SD cards with preloaded learning content, flash drives as well as sms and/radio based learning methods, these are a necessity in a country where internet connectivity is often inaccessible for our refugee and vulnerable recipients.
The Andan Prize for Innovation in Refugee Inclusion will help us reach our goal of creating a certified training program for youth and young adults to learn basic and advanced digital skills and computer aided design alongside soft skills to train the next generation to become directly involved in the reconstruction and development activities of their communities, and to gain these valuable skills for remote work opportunities.

The GM Prize for Innovation in Refugee Inclusion, LANer seeks to provide mobile, trauma-informed education and support to children and families in Ugandan refugee camps. This will be in form of shipping container schoolhouses providing trauma-informed education for children in refugee camps - can be dispatched to where they are needed within a few days of being ordered, fully stocked with supplies. They can be relocated with one day notice. The values, policies and volunteer handbook of the project travels with each “box,” as do instructions on how to quickly get the program up and running. All volunteers, no matter how short or long term, receive training on working with children who have been through trauma. Boxes are staffed with volunteers and funded remotely.
The Project volunteers are trained to work with children who have been through a trauma, and no child is ever excluded or punished for difficult behavior or disabilities. They are instead given 1:1 support at school and at home (tent, sidewalk squat, wherever is "home") to promote inclusion and healing. We also identify and protect vulnerable children and unaccompanied minors that may otherwise slip through the cracks. We operate out of converted shipping containers so all our love and work is packed neatly into a box and delivered to where it is needed most.
We shall couple this with online network of learner-rated educational resources/courses freely shared among organizations serving young Sudanese and Congolese refugees in Uganda. The program will provide refugee youth and organizations that serve them with access to Arabic and English multimedia learning resources. Members will be able to add resources, create courses, rate and comment on resources, and create new topical collections.

We promise a hopeful AI future for LANer where we can even experiment with Augmented Reality as well as Virtual Reality to observe how these technologies can be inculcated onto the LANer app for making learning more useful for the end result student.
There are two key problems in education around the globe: Firstly, many students do not meet required standards Secondly, educators spend the majority of their time (up to 65%) on administrative tasks such as marking and data tracking. This is time that is not spent improving the quality of instruction
Our LANer–eLearning platform is building a future of education where educators are appropriately supported to provide effective education and learners have access to a 24/7 curriculum, created for their specific and precise learning needs in every moment.
By using AI, LANer provides genuine adaptivity and personalisation to overcome the traditional one-size-fits-all model of education that leaves so many students disengaged. As students learn on LANer, every click, every score, every interaction is recorded. This data feeds into artificially intelligent algorithms that learn how each individual student learns and plot the most effective route through learning material for each individual. Gaps in foundational knowledge are quickly identified and remedied, weaknesses are scaffolded and strengths built upon, with automated, constructive feedback provided at the point of need. Differentiated material is provided, based on a students focus, difficulty levels and their pace of learning, among other factors, to ensure that every learning experience is maximally effective.
By automating routine administrative tasks, such as marking, monitoring progress and generating progress reports, LANer relieves the administrative burden on educators. The most effective feedback provides cues and reinforcement for learners and takes place at the point of learning, so not only does LANer’s automarked assessments remove the pressure of marking from the teacher, it also improves the quality of learning for students. With LANer’s real time analysis of student performance, educators have thorough and accurate insight into their students’ learning. Easy-to-use dashboards provide instant access to detailed learning data at an individual and class level, without the usual manual data input that teachers are all too familiar with.
LANer can save educators up to six hours per week, allowing more time to be spent planning flexible and effective interventions. Using LANer, educators can quickly identify which students need further assistance and which need more challenging work, understand the trends and patterns at a class level and update their lesson plans to ensure all students are making the required progress.
The combination of providing personalised resources to every student
and enabling educators to focus their energy where it is most effective
can reduce achievement gaps, particularly for learners who are typically
let down by the education system: those who are from disadvantaged
backgrounds and those who have specific learning needs. It is a travesty
that any child is left behind, but the blow is hardened when so many of
these children are those who are already so vulnerable. Analysis
already shows that when using LANer all students, regardless of their
background, prior attainment or specific needs, achieve similar levels
of understanding. LANer is helping to pave the way to a world in which
every child achieves their full potential.

The combination of providing personalised resources to every student and enabling educators to focus their energy where it is most effective can reduce achievement gaps, particularly for learners who are typically let down by the education system: those who are from disadvantaged backgrounds and those who have specific learning needs. It is a travesty that any child is left behind, but the blow is hardened when so many of these children are those who are already so vulnerable. Analysis already shows that when using LANer all students, regardless of their background, prior attainment or specific needs, achieve similar levels of understanding.
