I WANT TO WRITE MY NAME
There are so many street children who lack basic education and cannot read or write. They cannot join the mainstream education schools because of stigma and a lack of basic support systems and livelihoods that are needed for the mainstream schools. However, these children desire to know how to read and write.
We aim at providing a BASIC INFORMAL DAY CENTER exclusively for street children and families. This will provide a conducive reading and writing environment that is informal but friendly and non-judgemental setting.
Basic education is a way of integrating these children into society. Evidence has shown that education is one major factor that contributes to social equality and a major contributor to globalization. Additionally, most cities in the developing world have street children and this could be duplicated globally.
According to an article by The New Humanitarian, Youth in crisis coming out of age in the 21st century, there are about 200,000-300,000 street children In Kenya .(https://www.thenewhumanitarian)
In Thika- Kiambu Kenya where we work with these children, there are about 2000 street children and families. Many of these children and some street mothers and dads do not know how to read and write. Starting "A day basic education center" for them would give them an opportunity to learn how to read and write. This would also enhance the desire for education which would be a bridge towards a better quality of life and access to other social and economic opportunities.
While there are so many schools around the mainstream schools have no way of accommodating street children who are addicted to glue and other narcotics. The Day basic education center will accommodate them first and rehabilitate them later. "We love first and encourage change later"
There are no other initiatives that look into the livelihoods of these children with a particular focus on basic literacy of reading and writing. Without basic literacy, they would lag behind in the current wave of technology and globalization.
This literacy project would also work as a stimulant for the street families to encourage their own children to learn and have a positive interest in education.
Our solution is to eliminate illiteracy among street children by providing A day basic education facility that will teach them basic skills of reading, writing, and numeracy.
The Day basic education center will be a rented building that has 2 teachers and other volunteers.
The children will be encouraged to visit the center 3 hours a day.
They will receive a meal before the class and a snack after the class.
Education is an equalizer! Education will always help even the disadvantaged groups to participate in the global arena.
street children deserve education and it starts with basic education of numeracy, reading, and writing. This will enhance the life of the street children and give them an avenue to join other education pathways or other career paths
The current education systems cannot accommodate them because they possess challenges of addictions, lack of discipline, and a very hardened life. These make them be labeled as social misfits. It would therefore be important to encourage them by loving them and giving them an opportunity for basic education.
- Increase the engagement of learners in remote, hybrid, and physical environments, including strategies and tools for parental support, peer interaction, and guided independent work.
We have aligned ourselves with....... Increase the engagement of learners in remote, hybrid, and physical environments, including strategies and tools for parental support, peer interaction, and guided independent work.
We believe street children can be learners. However, they lack access to the mainstream basic education centers that have a "perfect education learning environment" which sometimes becomes rigid and impossible to accommodate street children in their imperfections. Street children may not attain that perfection that is required in mainstream education centers.
We want to increase the engagement of learners(street children) in this education environment that is not conducive for them.
- Pilot: An organization deploying a tested product, service, or business model in at least one community.
We have been giving meals and social support to the street children for several years. However, we discovered that these children have a desire for basic literacy skills.
We would like to role it out in a structured way. currently, we are dealing with 300 street children who are interested in basic education.
- A new application of an existing technology
Our approach to education is innovative in the sense that we form bais to any technology. Everyone has to read and write to be able to move to the next level in education. We are also innovative in that it will give street children access to the technology of the future. It will make them have hope that they too can be involved in the technology of tomorrow
