Our screening program will detect potential health disorders or diseases in women who do not have any disease symptoms, providing patient advocates that join forces with obstetricians, gynecologists, and other affiliated organizations to push for a Pro-BNP blood test for all pregnant women and echocardiograms. We have partnered with Lumin Diagnostics Services whose mission is to introduce mobile testing services for homebound patients. Their laboratory services extend to meet long-term health services for retirement homes as well as corporate companies. Their professional experts have extensive experience in the medical field and are aware of every technological advancement thereby providing reliable and accurate diagnostics results for every test. We also partnered with My Favorite Phlebotomist LLC whose mission is to provide quality blood draws in the comfort of your home or site of choice. They specialize in difficult venipunctures as well as patients with needle phobias. Advanced Phlebotomy Training is available.
A recent study found that after 2010, the “reported maternal mortality rate for Texas doubled within a two-year period to levels not seen in other U.S. states.” In Texas, black women bear the greatest risk of maternal death, but all races suffer from the same types of illnesses. Our dedicated work will help increase awareness so that all health care providers and women will know about the silent dangers that can go wrong with the heart during or after pregnancy. A BNP blood test will be able to warn the obstetricians.
Our Tri•Namic Collaboration consists of a Doula, Family Nurse, and Phlebotomist. We offer mobile wellness checks, blood draws, women and postpartum health services. LetsTalkPPCM Doulas provide emotional, physical comfort and support before, during, and after labor following childbirth making sure new mothers are in good health. These near-miss situations can go unnoticed in a young woman as she seems to be too young to experience any heart-related complications due to pregnancy. As part of our treatment program, we want to help provide funding to patients that cannot afford or health insurance that does approve wearable life vest for patients that are in heart failure and at high risk for cardiac arrest. The vest protects and monitors the heart 24/7 except when showering. We want to help pay for medications but to create additional part-time work-from-home positions for women with near-miss disabilities caused by pregnancy.
- Equip last-mile primary healthcare providers with the necessary tools and knowledge to detect disease outbreaks quickly and respond to them effectively.
Mobile clinics mainly serve the uninsured (60%) and the publically insured (31%), and generally operate in low-income communities. Mobile Clinics provide cost-effective prevention services that help people live long and healthy lives. This means that each visit they save on average $1,600 due to this prevention. Mobile Clinics provide accessible care at a cheaper cost to the healthcare system than Emergency Department visits. It is estimated that each mobile clinic results in 600 fewer Emergency Department visits every year. This means that each visit to a mobile clinic saves on average $200 (approximately one-fifth of an emergency visit).
- Prototype: A venture or organization building and testing its product, service, or business model.
The Mobile Clinic may be defined as a facility specially fabricated on a vehicle providing examination, consultation, prescription to outpatients including dispensing of medicines, basic laboratory services, vaccination facilities, and procedures by a nurse practitioner/ phlebotomist, and life coach. Currently, there are an estimated 2,000 mobile clinics located across the country, representing all states and Washington, DC. Services include primary care, preventive screening, disease management, behavioral health, dental care, prenatal care, and pediatric care. Addressing the triple aim of patient outcomes, quality, and cost, we find mobile clinics are improving access to care with up to 6.5 million visits annually.
- A new business model or process that relies on technology to be successful
Close to 30 million Americans don’t have health insurance, so most aren’t able to afford these medications. $907 a month can be rent. For a person on federal minimum wage, it is 65% of their income. These medications save lives by increasing their heart muscle function and help reach recovery. It breaks our hearts when I read stories of women with peripartum cardiomyopathy not taking their medication because they are too expensive. We should all have access to life-saving medications. Gaining more funding will help us support and give back to other affiliated organizations. Our dedicated work will help increase awareness so that all health care providers and women will know about the silent dangers that can go wrong with the heart during or after pregnancy.

We currently host events, fundraise, sell shirts, insulated bottles, bumper stickers, pens, and multiple services for our community. In 2019, I was contacted by a Pro Publica reporter who came from California to have lunch with me. We discussed the disparities of life insurance and better ways to connect me with other local organizations. I was placed in a collation group of emails with other founders, and health care leaders in Texas. From there I've shared my story numerous times through the media, and across the nation, including with NBC News, Baylor Scott & White, The Press Association in London, UK, American College Of Obstetrician & Gynecologist(ACOG), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC), Texas Department of Health & Human Services.

Our mission is to eradicate Peripartum Cardiomyopathy as a life-threatening illness found in pregnancy. Our education program will provide training and certification classes on becoming a certified doula or grant writer. Our treatment program will provide financial relief to suffering PPCM patients that cannot afford medication, and or examinations. Our screening program will provide patient advocates that join forces with obstetricians, gynecologists, and other affiliated organizations to push for a Pro-BNP blood test for all pregnant women. Our research program will provide funding to Intermountain Healthcare's PPCM scientific research study. African-American women had a 15.7-fold higher relative risk of peripartum cardiomyopathy than non–African Americans (odds ratio [OR]: 15.7, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 3.5 to 70.6). Other significant univariate risk factors were hypertension (OR: 10.8, 95% CI: 2.6 to 44.4), being unmarried (OR: 4.2, 95% CI: 1.4 to 12.3), and having had >2 previous pregnancies (OR: 2.9, 95% CI: 1.1 to 7.4). African-American ethnicity remained a significant risk factor for peripartum cardiomyopathy when other risk factors were considered in multivariable (OR: 31.5, 95% CI: 3.6 to 277.6) and stratified analyses (OR: 12.9 to 29.1, p < 0.001). Although the frequency of peripartum cardiomyopathy (185 of 100,000 deliveries) at this center was higher than in previous U.S. reports, it was comparable to the frequency in countries with more women of African descent (100 to 980 of 100,000). Analysis of other U.S. studies confirmed that the frequency of peripartum cardiomyopathy was significantly higher among African-American women.

The plan is to train and hire doulas that will be able to suggest when women should be seen about certain alarming symptoms. We want to also highlight the partner’s role in pregnancy and how they can do their best at preparing for the best or the worse. We will create a podcast to open up conversations on mental health, health care in the black community, and how to coach the younger generation on the importance of learning your body. I didn’t understand how on earth I was gonna be able to keep my organization going, but I knew if I continued to use my pocket money, we’ll be broke forever.
We have partners already.

I am Brianna Harris-Henderson, founder of LetsTalkPPCM, and I am interested in applying for your available grant. On May 08, 2014, my oldest sister Crystal Brackens-Prieston passed away six months from complications after giving birth to her son. Three years later, we learned that she died from Peripartum Cardiomyopathy(PPCM). It’s heart disease of unknown cause that affects young women, often with devastating consequences. The frequency of peripartum cardiomyopathy varies markedly between African and non-African regions. We truly believe that her death was preventable. Her passion for increasing awareness in community health inspired us to fight for a bright future for all mothers, one in which women are not dismissed, but are heard, respected, and cared for as equal individuals. I started raising awareness through my non-profit LetsTalkPPCM, an organization that captures the stories of countless women impacted by pregnancy-induced heart failure across the nation. As an African-American woman, I also work to address the systematic racism many expecting mothers face.

We will need a medical RV that provides the needed wellness equipment to travel to local patients providing care for pregnant women, children, men, and elderly patients. This program is for patients who need constant support due to chronic conditions and patients who cannot easily leave their homes. Helping patients access essential health information quickly, which can minimize extra costs such as unnecessary hospital visits. Mobile clinics cost about $300,000 initially and $375,000 annually to operate. It is estimated that each mobile clinic results in 600 fewer Emergency Department visits every year.
