OC Track Blowhorn
When the COVID pandemic overwhelmed the Indian healthcare system, there was a dire need of improving the technological infrastructure of the healthcare system. Though there was availability of critical medical equipment for medical care, there did not exist an effective system which ensured these equipment reached their desired destination.
We at Blowhorn, in partnership with the Government of Delhi and the Boston Consulting Group aimed to resolve the last mile challenges. To play our part in ‘Atma Nirbhar Bharat’ (Independent India) and ensure no patient suffers due to unavailability of life saving medical equipment, we have developed a platform called ‘OC Tracking’, which will enable the proper inventory and last mile management of medical equipment.
The solution will ensure, if we face another pandemic, the chaos of medical equipment unavailability during India’s deadly second wave will not repeat and unnecessary loss of life will be prevented.
The COVID pandemic was the nadir for the Indian healthcare system. The pandemic ravaged through the country and laid bare the inefficiencies of the existing system. The inefficient supply chain greatly compromised the ability of the Indian healthcare workers to provide adequate care for the patients. There are close to around ~65,000 hospitals in India, and a majority of them do not have any IT infrastructure system to indicate the current availability of medical equipment with them. The modern healthcare system is only as good as the life saving equipment available at the hospitals. Currently there exists no system which indicates the current availability of medical equipment across the country's hospitals. As per the 2020 human development report, India has only 5 hospital beds for every 10,000, and this directly relates to medical equipment unavailability. In the next decade, India will be ramping up it’s healthcare system to prevent a repeat of the healthcare system debacle during the pandemic, and to complement the ramp up, there needs to be an efficient supply chain. Our solution aims to provide a map and track platform and a one single holistic tracking view for all medical equipment and ensure 100% availability of lifesaving equipment across the country’s hospitals. The main aim of our solution is to ensure transparency and optimal utilisation of the life-saving medical equipment. The solution will ensure the inventory is used efficiently and this will lead to providing timely medical care to the patients.
Our solution will ensure the real time status of any medical equipment across the entire indian healthcare system.
Every hospital will be able to relay the status of all its medical equipment to a centralized control room, which will enable authorities to analyze and plan the medical equipment requirements at a city / district level. This will also ensure no hospital faces a shortfall of emergency medical equipment.
OC Tracking is a quick map and track platform which saves 100s of hours in planning / tracking / MIS so that the quality checked medical equipment reaches the health care institutions on time.
OC Tracking platform consists of 2 components
Web Portal App: To upload inventory, print out QR to stick onto the concentrators, configuration and user management
OC Track Android App: Simple to use android app to perform receiving, quality check and dispatch to other hospitals / departments.
All was done on a pro bono basis to help the deserved people get their life critical equipment.
The Governments, hospitals and the entire healthcare systems were in dire need of medical equipment to treat the affected. There was help coming from different Samaritans, NGOs and national / international communities in the form of medical equipment. The unique challenge was to be able to track all the medical equipment and ensure it reaches the right departments / hospitals / beneficiaries and also maintain stock checks (condition of the equipment).
The existing system did not have any quality control check, once the equipment was delivered to the hospitals, there was no mechanism for checking the condition of the equipment, resulting in delays in case the equipment was defective due to unavailability of proper feedback channels for redressal.
Our solution serves the last ensure last-mile primary healthcare providers. The solution helps the government and corporate / individual volunteers to bring in the tracking of medical equipment into a centralized platform and solve the hurdle of tracking.
The solutions will ensure every healthcare provider is equipped with requisite tools to provide the optimum level of care to the patients.
The main objective of any healthcare system is to promote health and well-being of the population. Our solution serves this objective by ensuring that no primary care provider fails in his duty due to unavailability of medical equipment
The current problem at the hospital facility level is that the majority of the country’s hospitals received a lot of donations and did not have an IT system to track the medical equipment which needed to be shipped and reutilised at multiple healthcare institutions. At present there is a need for every indian state to monitor which hospital has how much stock of life saving medical equipment and if stocks could support a 30-50% surge in the influx of patients requiring critical medical support.
- Equip last-mile primary healthcare providers with the necessary tools and knowledge to detect disease outbreaks quickly and respond to them effectively.
Problem: The Indian health care system is burdened with inefficiency, and one of the biggest problems is poor inventory management, which results in delayed delivery and inventory shrinkage at the warehouse after procurement. This leads to delay in providing emergency medical care.
Solution: An efficient and easy to use inventory management system which can be used to ensure effective distribution of equipment and ensure timely medical care is provided to the patients. We aim to serve a majority of the Indian private and public hospitals who do not have the capability to manage their inventory leading to an inefficient healthcare system.
- Pilot: An organization deploying a tested product, service, or business model in at least one community.
The requirement of an efficient inventory management system cropped up when the government warehouse’s piled up with equipment, due to donations from various NGOs and donors. This resulted in an inefficient distribution network and led to the government to not having a grip on when and where the equipment’s were dispatched.
After understanding the problem and discussing with the on ground staff, we came up with this solution in a span of two months, and currently we are piloting the solution with two different state governments.
We are looking to expand to multiple states in the coming months.
