AfyaRekod
African countries have limited doctors, and the lack of proper health data infrastructure makes the problem even more damaging as doctors are forced to treat their patients without having their full medical history.
At AfyaRekod we believe that treatment happens in the hospital and healthcare happens outside the hospital, our platform bridges the gap between the two by ensuring that health organizations manage both treatment and healthcare to support patients anywhere, anytime through tools and resources accessible on the platform.
The platform is AI-driven and is both a centralized and decentralized system. Centralized as it allows for health facilities to provide services to patients outside the hospitals, decentralized as it allows for users to store their health information using their mobile devices.
AfyaRekod platform enables the mobility of health records, allowing not only the patients to take part in their treatment but also enables the doctors to provide better treatment.
The capacity of African countries to address healthcare challenges remains hindered by the lack of health data and coverage. With the whole world still struggling with the pandemic, it’s currently evident to the world that centralized health management systems that rely solely on people walking into a health facility to acquire patient data are not sufficient.
The lack of data thus represents a major obstacle to obtaining quality health data in Africa, consequently making the production of evidence-based policy and responses to health challenges more difficult. There is both a lack of primary community health data on diseases and most importantly, patient data which is critical to saving lives. There is an alarming rate of deaths due to misdiagnosis, 82% being due to NCD; as reported by WHO.
Health system data has been limited only to health care facilities that have operated in silos making it difficult for patients and other parties to access the information.
Our innovation, AfyaRekod, is a digital health platform that solves the problem of structured capture, storage, real-time access, and mobility of health data. The platform also focuses on giving the sovereign right of ownership of the data back to the patients.

Through our SAAS platform, health facilities can access patients outside the health facilities while prompting patients to proactively manage their health and take positive action to improve it, through daily record keeping of their health status and providing access to you doctors, health experts, and other health service providers.
There are three channels i.e. Mobile App, USSD, and Web portal that patients can utilize. Patients can keep a health journal, input the current medications and prescriptions, book appointments, book telehealth sessions, share their medical folder with other health practitioners, and access health information.
The SAAS platform is a robust platform that offers several tools including; HMIS, EHR, Remote Patients Management, Pandemic and outbreak tool, and Telehealth tool.
The platform is driven by one unique user ID; This means it doesn’t matter what hospital a patient belongs to; the information is the same and a patient's data can be viewed by the last hospital in real-time.
AfyaRekod's main focus is improving rural healthcare and access to health services. The platform is very beneficial to anyone who wishes to keep track of their health records. However, we aim to serve patients, especially any patient suffering from a lifestyle disease or a threatening illness like cancer and cardiovascular diseases.
In most rural African communities, the ratio is one doctor to every 5000 patients. This is a critical problem for patients who require constant observation and access to doctors.
Afyarekod allows a diabetic patient in an isolated rural town of Lodwar, conduct home monitoring of blood glucose levels, urine ketones and update the results on the platform. His social worker can get a real-time overview of the record and recommend treatment. And as such, we focused and piloted the solution in various rural health facilities.
Our patients are segmented into 3 categories, including:
- Active Users: People with ongoing health issues, like patients suffering from various types of disease and require constant monitoring.
- Semi-active Users: These are either Mothers, Pregnant women, and social health workers who periodically engage health facilities for services.
- Passive Users: These are the general public.
AfyaRekod platform promotes inter-border medical services, A youth who is in the heart of a slum, experiencing a mental breakdown is able to access tele-counseling help they need from a counselor who is sitting in Kigali or Europe.
Through the AfyaRekod App, we are enabling normal people to take charge of their health and access healthcare beyond their geographical area through our telehealth solution.
We are building an ecosystem of healthcare providers that will be able to provide consultations at a cheaper cost and way more effectively.
Our survey feature on the mobile App also allows any consenting user to take part in surveys and earn Afya tokens that they can redeem for access to medical services like booking a consultation or paying for their medical cover.
- Strengthen disease surveillance, early warning predictive systems, and other data systems to detect, slow, or halt future disease outbreaks.
About 35% of documented hospital expenditure in emerging economies is due to mistakes based on lack of data. In 2019, it was reported that 40% of Africa had access to the internet, number is expected to grow, thus providing a large market for AfyaRekod.
Additionally, according to the World Economic Forum, by 2030, AI will access multiple sources of data to reveal patterns in disease and aid treatment and care. AfyaRekod is well-positioned to be the primary source of health data in Africa, allowing us to implement more advanced technologies that will transform the health care industry in the continent.
- Growth: An organization with an established product, service, or business model rolled out in one or, ideally, several communities, which is poised for further growth.
We launched the platform in May 2020 and within just one year we have managed to onboard 40+ health facilities, 100,000+ patients on our web portal, and over 6000+ mobile users.
Among the health organizations we have onboarded, 2 are County Governments, 35 are run by the sisters (AOSK), 3 specialty clinics, including Diabetic clinic, a diagnostic clinic, and a physiotherapy clinic.
The county government of Mombasa deployed our Covid-19 tool, to manage the pandemic, one of the key observations is the increasing number of mental health cases being reported. The county is interested to use the AfyaRekod telehealth tool to provide virtual counseling sessions for the public.
We have also managed to support a faith-based health facility with the digitization of their historical data. By digitizing health records, the health facilities are now able to cut the cost of paper-based systems and save time generating reports.
- A new business model or process that relies on technology to be successful
While Afya Rekod is built on innovative technology (AI and Blockchain), what makes the product uniquely innovative is the fact that it's patient-driven. We have built several tools that are all necessary in any health ecosystem, our clients can select the various tool that they need without worrying about buying from multiple vendors. Because we have a standardized data structure, it ables us to connect the mobile app with the SAAS platform, empowering patients with ownership of their own health.
AfyaRekod is built on a decentralized open-source blockchain. Medical records for each patient are stored as blockchain-based tokens, enabling trusted parties from the health facilities and organizations the authenticity of the token and its provenance. AfyaRekod is also powered by Artificial Intelligence which does the disease and symptoms correlations which can aid in the diagnosis, help detect abnormalities, detect early outbreaks and monitor mobility and evolution of diseases via timely data analytics.
AI-powered technology has proven to be beneficial for the provision of health care services when emergency lines outpaced capacity. With the Covid-19 pandemic, many people turned to self-check tools for symptom tracking and accessed virtual doctors through telemedicine to get medical advice. AfyaRekod uses AI modules to help detect abnormalities, detect early outbreaks and monitor mobility and evolution of diseases via timely data analytics.
