The Problem
UNESCO estimates that only 36 percent of teachers are qualified in sub-Saharan Africa, resulting in an 81.6 pupil to qualified teacher ratio. Furthermore, an additional 17 million qualified teachers in sub-Saharan Africa will be needed by 2030, yet teacher training resources and teaching and learning materials are limited, and insufficient professional development hinders their success.
The Solution
To better support teachers and improve student learning outcomes, Eneza Education Ghana is developing TeachMobile, a web-based and SMS platform that gives teachers access to teaching and learning materials, real-time support through chats, and training courses.
Through the platform, teachers will be able to assign homework to students and continuously assess and monitor their performance. With this data, teachers can gauge the effectiveness of their lessons and better personalize their teaching. The platform will also build a community of teachers who can interact with and support each other via SMS.
Market Opportunity
- In Ghana specifically, 5.7 percent of nursery teachers, 47 percent of kindergarten teachers, 56 percent of primary school teachers, 71 percent of junior high school teachers, and 86 percent of senior high school teachers are properly trained.
- The Ghanaian government mandates certification every two years, requiring headteachers and teachers to continuously complete professional development.

Empowering teachers; spreading education everywhere
The Problem
The demand of teachers is increasingly rising with high levels of teacher attrition in Sub-Saharan Africa. UNESCO estimates that 69 million new teachers will be needed by 2030 to meet universal educational goals over the next 14 years.
Only 36.5% of teachers are qualified to deliver lessons to students within Sub-Saharan Africa, as at 2016. With over 650 million children and youth, according to Brookings, not meeting learning milestones, it is critical to explore alternative approaches to meet the demand of teachers that will focus on recruiting and providing continuous professional development.
45% of teachers of teachers are not in the classrooms teaching according to Brookings, despite being present in classrooms thus contributing to the overwhelming number of children of school going age who are in school and yet not learning.
The Solution
Eneza has developed a technology platform that allows primary and secondary students, their parents, and teachers to access local, relevant, affordable academic courses and study tools by SMS, an Android application, and online.
Eneza aims to combine its mobile learning technology with teacher training institutions within Africa. Eneza’s technology platform will allow trainees to continuously access relevant teacher training and continuous professional development modules by Short Messaging Service (SMS) and web platforms.
This will allow teachers to develop themselves with proven pedagogical concepts and teaching techniques by taking lessons & assessments with individualized feedback on correct and incorrect answers.
Additionally, the teachers will be able to use Eneza’s Ask-An-Expert (AAE) platform to engage experts on challenges encountered in the field and these experts will be able to give prompt and fast response and support to help them overcome their challenges.
With Eneza’s platform, teachers will be able to track their own progress as well as measure the success of their lesson delivery. This will be done by utilizing data gathered on their students’ interaction with the platform as students will be allowed to take lessons on the same platform and their interactions and performance would be connected to their assigned teacher’s accounts.
Change & Impact
Eneza believes that by empowering teachers with the right tools and training, they will be equipped to tackle the ever growing demand of teachers. Teachers will have easy access to training content and curriculum structures thus designing the right kind of learning content for students. Eneza is putting development and growth right at the fingertips of teachers and educators using their mobile devices. Educators will have the adequate data to make the right decisions in determining learning outcomes of students.
- Teacher and educator training
- Personalized teaching, especially in disadvantaged communities
Eneza’s idea is an unconventional and creative approach to dealing with the issue of continuous professional development of teachers because it doesn’t require the purchase of new hardware and allows for teachers to grow professionally by accessing great-quality content in remote areas that do not have access to the internet.
The whole idea leverages on the power of mobile learning as the content and learning interactions can happen on any kind of phone from dumb phones, feature phones through to smart phones as well as online platforms.
Eneza is solution is an SMS, USSD and web based platform that provides curriculum aligned content to users. With content on teacher training and capacity development, teachers are able to take lessons, answer questions and ask experts on critical in-class experiences right from their mobile phones or computers.
Our API has the ability to understand each user interaction and determine the learning outcomes based on their performance on the platform. The analytics provides decision makers with the power to make data-driven decisions.
Over the next 12 months, Eneza is looking to develop its teacher products for its three existing markets (Kenya, Ghana and Ivory Coast). Using our SMS, USSD and web platform, Eneza is looking to give teachers continuous professional development content and also the ability to track the performance of the students in their class and determine the impact of lessons based on empirical data on student performance which will then be used to improve lesson delivery and improve learning outcomes of students
Eneza’s long-term strategy is to build a social community of teachers who will not be restricted by the boundaries of space and time. Teachers will be able to access any kind of content which will contribute to improving their capacity as individuals and contribute to their impact to students through their lesson delivery.
Eneza looks to connect teacher accounts to student accounts which will provide teachers will real time data to support their decision making process. The platform will also create a revenue making opportunity for teachers and support in the tracking of school attendance using QR code technology.
